Abstract

A tool comprising a template of one piece construction with a horizontal bed 1 and an attached flange 2 which is positioned at right angles to it. The bed and the flange form a rigid frame around a centrally positioned aperture. In use, the tool is positioned upon the previously layed course of bricks and mortar applied, filling the space, and being smoothed off with a trowel. The tool allows for an accurate, consistently uniform layer of mortar to be applied. The angled flange allows for a layer of mortar to be applied to the butt end of the adjoining brick. The bricklaying aid is slid along into position for the next brick, so building a new course. A recess 3 in the tool allows it to be used to build corner sections. The tool may be fitted with two spirit levels 4.

Description

BRICK LAYING AID
The invention relates to the problem of an untrained person laying bricks. This especially applies to building corners.
Any other brick laying aid suffers from the disadvantage in that they cannot be used to build corners, and have moving parts, and are therefore complicated to use.
An object of this invention is to produce a brick laying aid which is easy to use, of one piece, and can be used for building corners.
Accordingly this invention provides a bricklaying aid which when used provides a uniformly level thickness of mortar on both the butt end of the adjoining brick, and the bed. The invention can be used for building corners as well as straight walls.
Preferably the brick laying aid will be a one piece injection moulding made out of a durable plastic material.
A preferred embodiment of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: FIGURE 1 shows an isometric view of the whole brick laying aid.
FIGURE 2 shows an isometric view of the whole brick laying aid from the flanged end which butts up to the adjoining brick when in use.
FIGURE 3 shows a view of the brick laying aid when being used to build corners.
Figure 1 shows the invention, it is a horizontal bed 1 and a flange at 90 degrees 2, with a cavity to accept a bed of mortar. The bed allows a layer of mortar to be layered in the cavity and then any excess mortar lying above the bed, and protruding from the flange can be removed. This provides a level joint for the mortar a both horizontal and vertical.
When the brick has been laid on the mortar the invention can be placed upon it and the spirit levels 4 can be used to check that the brick is absolutely level.
The brick can then be adjusted accordingly.
There is a recess 3 on the bottom of the brick laying aid that makes it possible to build comers.
Figure 2 shows the shoulders that sit on top of the brick 5, the depth of the shoulder determines the thickness of the mortar. The shoulder protrudes over the top of the brick approximately 7mm; this prevents any spilling of mortar on to the brick face.
This shoulder 6 determines the thickness of the mortar on the butt end of the brick previously laid.
The faces of the shoulders 5, 6 will be slightly bevelled and polished to allow easy removal of the invention once the mortar is laid, without disturbing the mortar.
Figure 3 shows the invention in position to be used to build a comer. Note that the cut out section 3 butts up to the brick laying at 90 degrees on the course below. This enables the cavity on the invention to be filled with mortar, and the brick can be laid at 90 degrees across the corner.
The invention can be used on both left and right hand corners.

Claims (6)

1. When using the flange part of the invention a uniform layer of mortar can be laid on the butt end of the previously laid brick.
2. By making use of the cut-out section corners can be built using the invention.
3. The invention provides a perfect bed of mortar in which to lay bricks and the bevelled shoulders mean that the removal of the invention from the bed of mortar will not disturb the mortar face, and therefore alleviates the need for pointing.
4. The bed of the invention hangs over the face of the brick below and will stop any mortar from the bed above contaminating the brick face.
5. By placing the invention on top of the brick the two spirit levels can be used once the brick is laid to check that the brick is perfectly level, without the use of a builder's level.
6. A brick laying aid substantially as herein described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
