Abstract

A wave energy converter uses thrust from wave powered water vehicles connected by levers to a central tethered rotatable hub. The vehicles are free to move vertically with the waves and are fixed horizontally to allow continued rotation of the hub even when the central structure is not completely vertical. The hub may comprise a weighted base, a spool for the tethers, a buoyancy tank, electrical generating equipment and a gearbox. The hub is secured to the sea floor and is free to rotate about its axis until the tension in the tethers is offset by the displacement of the hub to maintain its vertical position at the surface as the tide changes.

Description

1
Wave energy converter
This invention relates to a device for generating electrical energy from sea /ocean waves.
Waves are generated by the passage of wind across the surface of the sea. Energy is transferred from the wind to the waves. Waves may travel vast distances across the ocean and at great speed, their energy is concentrated near the water surface. The energy rapidly decreases with increasing depth below the surface. As the oscillatory motion is highest at the surface and diminishes exponentially with depth.
The energy contained within a wave occurs as a circular or elliptical motion depending on the depth of water the wave is passing through. This means that the energy of the wave travels great distances in a direction but the water in the wave moves mostly vertically and remains very close to its original position after the wave energy has passed.
Current wave energy devices are fixed in position relative to the waves and use the wave energy as it passes.
This invention uses several wave powered water vehicles located around a central floating hub. The vehicles move around the hub and have their own velocities relative to the wave to produce rotational force at the hub that can be used to generate electricity like a windmill.
The rotational force generated by the wave powered water vehicles act to spin the device, this rotation coils the anchor ropes around the tether spool. The anchoring system generates tension due to the displacement of the central hub. i.e. the device spins tightening up the anchor ropes pulling down on the central hub until the turning force equals the floating force.
Fig 1. shows a wave energy conversion device in side elevation view. Fig 2. shows a wave energy conversion device in plan view.
2
Fig 1 shows a wave energy conversion device where several wave powered water vehicles are situated around a central hub. They are free to move vertically with the waves and are fixed horizontally this allows the continued rotation of the device even when the central structure is not completely vertical. The wave powered water vehicles are connected via levers a distance from the central hub and provide a force to rotate the entire centre of the device.
The central hub consists of a weighted base and a spool for the tethers that are attached to the seabed. A buoyancy tank is located above the spool. Electrical generating equipment and a gearbox are located above the buoyancy tank. The gearbox is attached to levers via hinge points that are connected to the wave powered water vehicles.

Claims
1. A wave energy converter that uses thrust from several wave powered water vehicles, to cause useable rotational motion a central floating hub that can be used to generate electricity.
2. A wave energy converter that uses rotational motion of the hub to provide tension in the tethering cables that pull the hub down into the water until the tension in the tethers is offset by the displacement of the hub, this maintains devices vertical position at the water surface as the tide changes.
3. A wave energy converter that uses hinge points to attach the water powered vehicles to the hub, this allows the machine to operate where the hub is not always vertical.
4. A wave energy converter that has a buoyancy tank that has as a secondary function the ability to store gas under pressure.
