Abstract

The collet 10 is for use with a tool handle 1 having a circular recess 7 to receive a circular tang of a tool 5. The collet includes a non-round bore (13, Figure 3) to receive a correspondingly non-round tang 16 of the tool. The handle may include a locking means 4 for locking the cutting tool to the handle. Part of the collet may be removed to form a slot 11 to expose a bore 12 of the collet. The locking means may include an end cap 6 with a central circular bore and two locking screws 8 to bear on the tang. The collet may be used for woodturning or woodworking tools with square or rectangular tangs that traditionally have been permanently fitted to a handle.

Description

1
COLLET
The present invention relates to a device for holding woodturning tools or any tool used in woodworking that has a square or rectangular tang that could traditionally only be permanently fitted to a wooden handle.
5 There are many tool handles on the market that are designed to be used with a number of interchangeable woodworking blades with tangs (prominently woodturning), but these blades are, and have always been round with no facility to hold a tang that is not round.
According to the present invention, a collet for use with a tool handle having a 10 circular recess to receive the circular tang of a tool, the collet having a bore that is non-round to receive a correspondingly non-round tang of a tool.
Thus, the tool handle can be used in conventional manner, with a round tang of a tool secured in the circular recess in conventional manner. When the tool to be used has a non-round tang, the collet, with a circular outer shape and a 15 corresponding non-round bore, is fitted in the circular recess, and the non-round tang of the tool fitted and suitably secured in the collet.
In essence the collet serves as a component or sleeve that converts a round hole to a hole that has an internal square or flat face with the purpose of a safe, secure and positive location of a none round tang against a machined flat face. This 20 vastly increases the flexibility of a multipurpose handle allowing an array of turning tool blades to be fitted.
The design of this new collet or adaptor allows for many sizes of tang to be fitted to the handle.
One embodiment of the invention will now be described with reference to the 25 accompanying drawings in which:-
2
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a tool holder and associated wood working tool.
Figure 2 is an enlarged view of the part A of Figure 1; and
Figures 3 to 10 are a series of perspective views and part-sectional 5 perspective views of the collet illustrated in Figures 1 and 2.
In Figures 1 and 2, a tool handle or holder 1 has an elongate handle 2 to be gripped by an operative, one end 3 of the tool holder having a means 4 of locking a cutting tool 5 to the handle.
The locking means 4 is formed as an end cap 6 fitted to the handle, with a 10 central circular bore 7 and two locking screws 8 extending through threaded holes 9 to bear on the tang of a woodworking tool. Ordinarily, the woodworking tool has a circular sectioned tang to fit in the circular bore 7.
However, some woodworking tools do not have a circular tang to fit in the circular bore 7 and the invention seeks to remedy this.
15 Thus, as is shown in Figure 2 and in more detail in Figures 3 to 9, a collet 10 is provided with a circular exterior to fit in the circular bore 7 of the locking means 4, with part of the collet machined away to form a slot 11 to expose its bore 12.
As is shown variously in Figures 3 to 9, the circular bore 12 of the collet, has the surface of its bore machined to provide a flat surface 13 centrally of the bore 12, 20 with machined vertical walls 14 extending from the edge of the flat surface. The distance between the vertical walls of the diameter of the bore 12 at an entrance end to the collet, whereby to ensure that there is no internal obstruction on the wall of the bore as it merges into the machined internal area.
The collet 10 is formed with an external flange 15 to butt against the end of the 25 locking means 4, and avoid dirt and particles entering the bore 12.
3
Thus, with a non-round tang, e.g. a rectangular tang 16 on the woodworking tool, it can be fitted into the collet, with particularly the one flat face of the tang resting on the support surface 13, the collet can then be inserted in the circular bore of the locking means 4 on the tool holder 1 and the locking screws 8 screwed down through 5 the slot 11 formed over the collet and into contact with a flat surface 16 on the tang, to hold the woodworking tool firmly to the handle.
