WRAPPING PAPER
This invention provides an improved type of wrapping paper in which a motif or message carried by the wrapping paper is illuminated.
Accordingly, the invention provides a roll or sheet of wrapping paper bearing a 5 motif comprising one or more elements selected from letters, numbers, symbols or images;
one or more light sources mounted on or behind the wrapping paper so as to illuminate the motif;
a source of electrical power for the light sources; and 10 means for preventing premature activation of the light sources.
The motif may comprise letters and/or numbers and optionally other symbols (e.g. punctuation symbols such as exclamation marks) which together constitute a message, such as "Merry Christmas" or "Happy Birthday".
Accordingly, in one embodiment, the invention provides a roll or sheet of wrapping 15 paper bearing a sequence of letters or numbers or other symbols which together constitute a message and optionally one or more images;
one or more light sources mounted on or behind the wrapping paper so as to illuminate the message and optionally the one or more images;
a source of electrical power for the light sources; and 20 means for preventing premature activation of the light sources.
In another embodiment, the invention provides a roll or sheet of wrapping paper bearing a motif comprising one or more images;
one or more light sources mounted on or behind the wrapping paper so as to illuminate the motif;
25 a source of electrical power for the light sources; and means for preventing premature activation of the light sources.
The wrapping paper is provided in the form of a roll or sheet. The sheet may be folded or arranged in the form of a roll before use. A sheet of wrapping paper may bear a single message or a plurality of messages (e.g. two, three or four 30 messages) but more typically, a single piece of wrapping paper will bear a single message.
2
The light sources advantageously are LED devices such as LED bulbs. The LED devices may together provide a single static colour or different colours. The LEDs may be arranged to provide changing colours.
In one embodiment, the light source(s) can be, for example, an array of LED 5 devices mounted on the wrapping paper, the array being configured to present an illuminated message or image as defined herein.
The light sources can provide static or flashing lights. When the light source is arranged to provide flashing lights, the flashing function can provide light sources that flash at different frequencies. Thus, the flashing lights sources can provide fast 10 flash or slow flash.
The message may be carried on a message-bearing region of the wrapping paper.
In another and preferred embodiment, the wrapping paper has a message-bearing region having one or more windows shaped so as to form letters or numbers or other characters which together constitute the message, and the light source(s) 15 is/are positioned behind the wrapping paper and is arranged so as to illuminate the windows.
A pocket may be provided behind the message-bearing region in which are contained the one or more flashing light sources, source of electrical power for the light sources, and at least part of the means for preventing premature activation of 20 the light sources.
The pocket may be constituted by the rear surface of the message bearing region and a panel (the rear panel) secured to the rear surface. The pocket may be a closed pocket.
Alternatively, the pocket may be formed separately and then secured to the rear 25 surface of the message-bearing region. For example pocket may comprise a pair of panels bonded together around their peripheries.
A rear surface (i.e. the surface facing inwardly when the wrapping paper is used) of the message-bearing region may have bonded thereto a rear panel, the rear surface and rear panel together defining an enclosed pocket within which are 30 contained the one or more flashing light sources, source of electrical power for the
3
light sources, and at least part of the means for preventing premature activation of the light sources.
The message bearing region may be embossed inwardly or outwardly so as to provide a three dimensional appearance to the message. Preferably, when 5 intended to provide a three dimensional appearance, the letters, numbers or symbols making up the message are formed so as to stand out from the plane of the wrapping paper.
In one particular embodiment, the invention provides a sheet of wrapping paper comprising:
10 a message-bearing region having one or more windows shaped so as to form letters or numbers or other characters which together constitute a message;
one or more light sources being disposed behind the message bearing-region; and a flexible light guide extending behind the windows, the flexible light guide 15 being arranged to convey light from the one or more light sources to the windows so as to illuminate the message;
a source of electrical power for the light sources; and means for preventing premature activation of the light sources;
wherein a rear panel is attached to a rear surface of the message-bearing region 20 so as to form an enclosed pocket in which are located the light sources, flexible light guide, source of electrical power and at least part of the means for preventing premature activation of the light sources.
Where the letters, numbers or other characters are defined by windows in the message-bearing region, the window may take the form of holes in the wrapping 25 paper and/or they may take the form of transparent or translucent regions of the wrapping material.
The transparent or translucent regions may be coloured so that the message shows up in one or more colours.
Where a flexible light guide is employed, it may take the form of, for example, a 30 flexible light tube which conveys the light from the light source to the windows.
4
The light tube is formed from a reflective flexible material such as a flexible plastics (e.g. polyethylene or cellophane) film.
The source of power for the light sources is typically a battery.
The means for preventing premature activation of the light sources may be a 5 switch which can be used to switch the light sources on or off. Alternatively or additionally, the means for preventing premature activation of the light sources may be a pull out tab which is removable to complete and electrical circuit to activate the light sources.
In one embodiment, the wrapping paper is provided with both a pull out tab and a 10 switch so that the light source can be turned on and off as required after removal of the pull out tab.
Where a switch is present, it is typically arranged so that at least a main body of the switch is behind the wrapping paper. The switch may be wholly behind the wrapping paper or an actuatable arm or lever of the switch may protrude through 15 and forwardly of the wrapping paper. Where an actuatable arm or lever of the switch protrudes through and forwardly of the wrapping paper, it may be concealed beneath a tag or rosette which may be attached to the paper by means of a repositionable adhesive.
In one embodiment of the invention, the wrapping paper is also provided with a 20 sound module (e.g. a chip) for making a sound such as a jingle or several bars of a tune or song when the light sources are activated. The sound module may be also carry a voice message, for example a voice message from the sender of a package upon which the wrapping paper is used.
The invention will now be described in more detail, but not limited, by reference to 25 the specific embodiments illustrated in the accompanying drawings Figures 1 to 6.
Figure 1 is a view from one side of a sheet of wrapping paper according to one embodiment of the invention.
Figure 2 is a view from other side of the sheet of wrapping paper of Figure 1.
5
Figure 3 is a side view of the wrapping paper of Figures 1 and 2 but with the laminated rear panel, light sources and switch omitted.
Referring to the drawings, a sheet of wrapping paper (1) according to one aspect of the invention has a message-bearing region (1A) carrying a message such as 5 "Happy Christmas". The letters making up the message are defined by windows cut into the wrapping paper. Attached to the rear surface of the message bearing region is a rear panel 5 which can be, for example, formed from a piece of paper bearing the same pattern as the wrapping paper or can be a plain coloured piece of paper. Alternatively, the rear panel can be formed from a plastics sheet or film. 10 The rear panel (5) together with rear surface of the message bearing region (1 A) together form an enclosed pocket in which are arranged a light reflecting strip (10) and a sealed unit (11) containing an LED light source. Inside the sealed unit is a circuit board (8) on which are mounted an LED bulb (6), batteries (9), an on-off switch (3) and a tab activator (4).
15 The sealed unit (11) is located at one end of the lower light reflecting strip (10). When the light source is activated, the flashing light is reflected along the light reflecting strip so that it illuminates the windows defining the letters. The light reflecting strip is typically made from a reflective plastics material. The light reflective strip may be a strip of a plastics material such as polyethylene or 20 cellophane which is naturally reflective or which has been coated with a reflective medium (e.g. a metallic coating) in order to enhance its reflectance.
The light reflecting strip may take the form of a light-reflecting tube, light from the light source being transmitted along the tube by internal reflection from the inner surfaces of the tube. The light tube may be a flattened flexible tube formed from 25 transparent plastics sheet or film material. The tube may be an extruded tube or may be formed from a flat length of plastics sheet material folded round to form a flattened cylinder and the longitudinal edges overlapped and bonded together.
The sealed unit (11) containing the batteries, circuit board and switch is connected via wires (7) to a second LED bulb mounted at one end of the upper reflective strip 30 or light tube (10).
The interior of the sealed unit (11) contains a circuit board (8) on which are mounted an LED bulb (6), batteries (9), an on-off switch (3) and a tab activator (4).
6
An actuating arm of the on-off switch (3) and the outer part of the tab activator (4) protrude through an opening in the wrapping paper so that the light source can be activated after a gift has been wrapped in the wrapping paper. The protruding parts of the switch and tab activator can be covered by means of a rosette or gift tag (not 5 shown) which can be removably and replaceably attached to the wrapping paper by means a layer of repositionable adhesive.
The inner end of the tab activator sits between two electrical contacts and prevents premature activation of the battery. Pulling out the tab activator (4) allows the electrical contacts to touch thereby completing an electrical circuit and allowing the 10 lights to be switched on. Instead of using a switch having an actuating lever which protrudes through an opening of the wrapping paper, the switch may be of the push-button type and may be concealed wholly within the pocket.
In a variation of the arrangement described above, the light reflecting strip or tube and the sealed unit can be contained within a closed pocket which is formed 15 separately and is then attached to the rear surface of the message-bearing region of the wrapping paper. The closed pocket can be formed from front and rear panels secured together around their peripheries, at least the front panel (i.e. the panel adjacent the windows in the wrapping paper) being transparent or translucent to allow the transmission of light.
20 In a further embodiment, in place of the light reflecting tube one or more lines or rows of LEDs mounted on or behind the surface of the wrapping paper are used to create a message on the wrapping paper.
It will readily be apparent that numerous modifications and alterations may be made to the specific embodiments of the invention described above without 25 departing from the principles underlying the invention. All such modifications and alterations are intended to be embraced by this application.
