Abstract
The pool 10 comprises a chamber formed into a truncated conical internal cavity with a wider top than bottom, such that a person can stand in the chamber with the upper torso extending out of the top end and exercise the lower body in the water. The pool is preferably made from compactable inflatable rings 13a-e formed of circular tubes with a base 4 secured to the bottom ring. The rings may have the same diameter but the tubes may have a decreasing diameter going upwards to create a wider space at the top. Alternatively the tubes 3a-e may have a constant diameter and the rings have an increasing diameter to increase the space at the top. The pool/bath may incorporate a drain. A plate may be located at the bottom of the pool to distribute the weight of the pool. Preferably the pool may be formed from welded or glued polyvinyl chloride (PVC) , Polyurethane (PU) or other plastics sheet material.
Description
Title: Water Exercise Pool The present invention relates to a water exercise pooi.
It is well know that aerobic exercise in water is effective. Most people do this type of exercise in a swimming pool. However it is not always convenient to travel to a pool, and many people do not like taking exercise in public places.
The invention seeks to provide a water exercise pool which can easily be erected in a domestic environment, e.g. in a bathroom, and which can be used by a single person.
According to the present invention there is provided a water exercise pool comprising a chamber with a generally truncated conical internal shape with an open wider top end and a closed narrow base, said chamber being adapted to be filled with water and of a size to allow one person to stand in the chamber with the upper torso extending out of the top end, and in which the person can exercise with the lower body in the water.
Preferably the pool can be compacted for storage.
Preferably the wall of the chamber is formed from a plurality of inflatable rings formed of generally circular tubes mounted one on top of the other with a base secured to the bottom ring, said base and rings being bonded together to provide a watertight chamber.
The tubes may be of substantially equal diameter, with the rings increasing in diameter from the bottom ring to the top ring to provide said tnincated conical chamber.
Alternatively the tubes may decrease in diameter from the bottom to the top with the rings being of equal diameter to provide said truncated conical chamber.
Preferably a drain device is provided to drain water from the chamber.
Preferably the base of the chamber is of non-slip material. Preferably the base is of cushioning material.
Preferably a plate is provided at the bottom of the chamber to distribute the weight of the chamber with water over a surface on which it sits.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 shows a perspective view of a first embodiment, Figure 1A shows a cross section view of the first embodiment, Figure 2 shows a perspective view of a second embodiment, and Figure 2A shows a cross section view of the second embodiment.
Referring to Figures 1 and IA there is shown a water exercise pool I. Pool I has a chamber 2 with a generally truncated conical internal shape with an open wider top end 2A and a closed narrow base 2B. Chamber 2 is adapted to be filled with water and is of a size to allow one person to stard in the chamber with the upper torso "A" extending out of the top end, and in which the person can exercise in the lower body in the water, Pool 1 may typically have an open top end of around 1.4m (e.g. 1.2 to 1.6m) and a height of 1.2m (e.g. 1 to I.4m).
The wall of the chamber is formed from a plurality of five inflatable rings 3A,3B,3C,3D,3E formed of generally circular inflatable tubes mounted one on top of the other with a base 4 secured to the bottom ring. The tubes may be of substantially equal diameter, with the rings 3A,3B,3C,30,3E increasing in diameter from the bottom ring to the top ring to provide the truncated conical chamber.
The base 4 and rings 3A,3B,3C,3D,3E are bonded together to provide a watertight chamber.
In this respect a waterproof liner of sheet material may be provided if desired (not shown).
Base 4 may be formed of cushioning material 4A to make it more comfortable on the feet and legs to exercise on, and may also have a non-slip inner surface 4B.
A plate 5 is provided at the bottom of the chamber to distribute the weight of the chamber with water over a surface on which it sits, such as a bathroom floor. If used indoors, the pool could be filled with hot and/or cold water from bathroom taps using a suitable hose with connectors.
A user "A" can do leg exercises in the pool. After use, water in the pooi can be drained away through a drain device such as a drain pipe 6 with a drain tap 6A. The tubes can be deflated and the pooi stored away in a compacted form.
In order to enter pool 1, steps could be provided. Alternatively a user could stand on the base 4 with the tubes 3A,3B,3C,3D,3E deflated, and then inflate the tubes to create the pool around the user and fill it with water. An air pump may be provided for this purpose.
Referring to Figures 2 and 2A there is shown a water exercise pool 10 which can be used in an identical manner to poo1 I but which has a different construction..
Pool 10 has a chamber 12 with a generally truncated conical internal shape with an open wider top end l2A and a closed narrow base 128. Chamber 12 is adapted to be filled with water and is of a size to allow one person to stand in the chamber with the upper torso "A" extending out of the top end, and in which the person can exercise with the lower body in the water. Pool 10 may typically have an open top end of around I.4m (e.g. 1.2 to I.6m) and a height of 1.2m (e.g. Ito 1.4m).
The wall of the chamber is formed from a plurality of five inflatable ringsl3A,13B,13C,13D,13E fonned of generally circular inflatable tubes oldifferent diameters mounted one on top of the other with a base 14 secured to the bottom ring. The tubes decrease in diameter from the bottom to the top with the rings 13A,13B,13C,13D,13E being of equal diameter to provide the truncated conical chamber.
The base 14 and rings I 3A,13B, I 3C, I 3D,! 3E are bonded together to provide a watertight chamber. In this respect a waterproof liner of sheet material may be provided if desired (not shown). Base 14 may be formed of cushioning material 14A to make it more comfortable on the feet and legs to exercise on, and may also have a non-slip inner surface 14B.
A plate 15 is provided at the bottom of the chamber to distribute the weight of the chamber with water over a surface on which it sits, such as a bathroom floor. A drain pipe 16 with a drain tap 16A is again provided.
Because the pool 1 or 10 is fonned with an internal shape as a truncated cone, less water is used than if the pool was cylindrical. This allows the pool to weight less when filled with water so that it may be supported by floors in buildings such as houses.
The pool I or 10 may suitably be formed of welded or glued PVC, PU or other plastics sheet material.
The exerciser of the invention may be used as a therapy for people after injuries to various parts of the lower torso.
The invention may take a form different to that specifically described above. For example different numbers of inflatable rings could be provided. Alternatively other constructions could be used to provided the truncated conical pool Further modifications will be apparent to those skilled in the art without departing from the scope of the present invention.
