Abstract
The H-bridge output stage 406 of a class-D amplifier provides two zero output states: a first zero state in which both load terminals are coupled to Earth, and a second zero state in which both load terminals are coupled to the supply rail. The first zero state is used when the signal level is low because the Earth rail is typically less noisy than the supply rail, but when the signal level is high the first and second zero outputs are selected equally often so that the common-mode output voltage is equal to half the supply voltage, which enables a larger output voltage swing. The circuit 404 maps a variable proportion â alphaâ of the 00 states output from the tri-level quantiser 403 into 11 states under control of the circuit 407 which responds to the level of the amplifier input signal.
