Abstract

A bed base cover 1 comprises a piece of cover material 2 which has attached peripherally at least one piece of material that extends downward from said piece of cover material to form side portions 4,5 and having a fastening arrangement 7 thereon which can, in use, allow at least a part of the side portion 4,5 to be detachable to enable access to the bed base. The flaps formed by the side portions 4,5 of the bed base cover allow the interior space of the bed base frame to be used for storage. The cover is suitable for bed bases comprising wooden slats, sprung slats or supported hardboard.

Description

t V.' INTELLECTUAL ..* PROPERTY OFFICE Application No. GB 1106297.3 RTM Date:23 November 2011 The following terms are registered trademarks and should be read as such wherever they occur in this document: Velcro Intellectual Properly Office is an operating name of the Patent Office www.ipo.gov.uk A Covering for a Bed Base The present invention relates to a cover for the base of a bed.
Coverings for the base of a bed are known and are usually formed from material that is permanently fixed to the base of the bed, thus forming an integral part of the bed base.
Said material may comprise fabrics such as nylon, suede or other suitable fabrics and typically covers the top and sides of the bed base so as to hide the internal structure of the bed base, principally for aesthetic purposes.
Accordingly, it will be appreciated that when such material is permanently fixed to the structure of the bed base, it is not possible to access the internal space located within the base of the bed unless the bed base incorporates other features such as drawers or doors that allow said space to be utilised.
It will be further appreciated that the incorporation of such features is likely to increase the cost of producing the bed and thus increasing the cost to the consumer and may, in certain circumstances, only permit access to a portion of the interior of the bed base.
The present Applicant has realised that it may be advantageous for the material covering the base of the bed to be wholly or partly removable, to allow access to the interior of the base of the bed such as for example for storage purposes.
Accordingly, it is an object of the present invention to provide an improved cover for the base of a bed which provides an aesthetic appearance and allows access to the interior of the bed base without the need for additional drawers or apertures in the fabric.
Thus and in accordance with the present invention there is provided a bed base cover comprising a piece of cover material which has attached peripherally at least one piece of material that extends downward from said piece of cover material to form side portions and having a fastening arrangement attachable thereon which can, in use, allow at least a part of the side portion to be detachable to enable access to the bed base.
With this arrangement it can be seen that it is possible to have the bed base covered by a removable cover that allows access to the interior of the base of the bed.
Preferably, the cover is provided in a variety of sizes such that it may be used in conjunction with different sizes of bed base.
The cover may be wholly or partly removable from the bed base and may comprise any suitable material, including but not limited to nylon or suede fabrics.
The cover arrangement may also comprise; a top portion that covers the supporting structure for the mattress, such as for example slats, and at least one side portion that is preferably partly or wholly removable from the main cover arrangement.
The side portions of the cover arrangement may be secured to the remainder of the cover located around the base of the bed using any suitable fasteners, including but not limited to hook and pile fasteners such as for example VELCRO, zip fasteners or magnetic fasteners.
The invention will now be described further by way of example only and with reference to the accompanying drawings in which; Figure 1 shows a schematic illustration of the bed base cover in use on the base of a bed, showing the removable portions of the cover and the fasteners that secure the cover around the base of the bed and; Figure 2 shows an illustration of the bed base cover in use on the base of a bed, showing how the cover is fitted to disguise the structural framework of the bed.
Referring now to Figure 1, the cover 1 is shown in use on the base of a bed. The cover I extends across the top surface 2 of the base of the bed that comprises the support system of the bed (not shown), such as for example wooden slats, sprung slats or supported hardboard.
The cover I then extends downward from the top surface 2, so as to hang down the sides 3 of the bed base, thus covering the structure of the base of the bed.
In the present example, the cover 1 is divided into two sections 4 and 5 on the side portions of the cover, so that access may be gained to the interior 6 of the base of the bed. Each section 4 and 5 of the side portion of the cover I is secured by way of fasteners 7, said fasteners 7 being located around the periphery of each side section and around the periphery of the corresponding side portion 4 of the cover I located over the framework 8 of the bed base. Said fasteners 7 may comprise a hook and pile, magnetic or other such suitable fastening arrangement.
When the fastenings 7 are undone, the side portion 4 of the cover I may be lifted to reveal the interior chamber 6 of the bed base, thus enabling access to storage space under the bed. When access is no longer required, the side portion 4 of the cover I is simply lowered back into place to form the side panel of the bed base and secured using the fasteners 7.
Referring now to Figure 2, once the fasteners 7 have been secured, the cover I forms the side panels of the base of the bed, thus disguising the bed frame 8 and any items stored within the interior chamber 6 of the bed base, as illustrated in the present Figure.
Whilst the present Figure illustrates a fastening arrangement 7 on one section 4 of the side portion of the bed base, it will be appreciated that such a fastening arrangement 7 may also be located on other components of the bed base, such as for example the entire side length of the bed base and/ or the end panel of the bed base.
It will be appreciated therefore that with such arrangements, it is possible to partly or wholly remove the cover I from the base of the bed to allow access into the interior 6 of the bed base and also to remove the cover I for washing if required.
It will further be appreciated that the removable feature of the cover 1 also enables the cover 1 to be changed, such as for example if an alternative colour of cover I is required.
This feature may be of particular use if a room is to be refurbished, as the removable cover 1 enables the upholstery comprising the base of the bed to be changed in accordance with the decoration of the room.
It is of course to be understood that the invention is not intended to be restricted to the details of the embodiments described above which are described by way of example only.
