Also described is a gate closure in which the hinged closure comprises a gate and a gate post.

Description

A Lock The invention relates to a lock, particularly to a lock device for providing a securing and/or locking of a gate closure such as an agricultural or farm gate.
Such agricultural gates are often of metal or wood, and are hinged at one end of a frame thereof to a gate post, being latched shut by a mechanism on an opposite side of the frame engaging with an adjacent gate post. Such mechanisms are vulnerable to damage or vandalism as they are externally mounted on the gate closure. Livestock or equipment in a field can be stolen if the mechanism is damaged or vandalised, leading to expensive losses and also repairs to or replacement of the gate enclosure.
It is an object of this invention to seek to mitigate these disadvantages.
According to one aspect of this invention there is provided a lock for a hinged closure, comprising a housing adapted to be mounted on a frame of the closure, and seating internally thereof, a bolt device reciprocable relative to the housing between respective open and closed positions of the closure and being adapted to bridge a relatively wide gap between the frame and a facing keeper, and deadlock retaining means adapted to retain the bolt device in use in the closed position, the housing being hollow to house the deadlock retaining means and having an in use lower face defined by spaced apart longitudinally extending flanges, there being a follower secured to the bolt device and located between and cooperating with the flanges for guiding the bolt device during longitudinal reciprocation thereof.
According to a further aspect of this invention, there is provided a gate closure, comprising a frame hingedly mounted on a gate post or one side of the frame and being lockable to a further gate post or the opposite side of the frame to the one side of the frame, and a lock as defined in the immediately preceding paragraph secured by the housing to the opposite side of the frame, the opposite side of the frame and the further gate post having orifices alignable in the closed position of the gate closure, the bolt device extending through the orifice in the opposite side of the frame into the orifice in the further post whereby to secure the gate closure closed.
Using the invention it is possible to provide a secure, tamper-resistant lock for a gate closure of wood or metal in that the operative parts of the lock are mounted internally of the housing, suitably a metal housing comprising a galvanised steel casing and in that the reciprocable bolt device, or sliding bolt, in use enters an orifice, a blind hole, in a gate post acting as a keeper.
Moreover, because the bolt device enters the blind hole the gate closure cannot be lifted off its hinges when the lock is locked.
A lock and gate closure are hereinafter described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings.
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the gate closure embodying the invention including a lock embodying the invention, in the open or unlocked position of the closure; Fig. 2 is a view similar to that of Fig. 1 in the closed or locked position of the closure; Fig. 3 is an underneath perspective view of the gate closure in the closed or locked position of the closure; Fig. 4 is an enlarged elevational view of the gate closure in the closed or locked position of the closure; Fig. 5 is an exploded elevational view of a lock embodying the invention; Fig. 6 is a schematic perspective view of a gate closure similar to that of Fig. 2, the unlocked position being shown in dashed lines; and Fig. 7 shows a gate closure according to the invention to a smaller scale than the other figures, and in elevation.
Referring to the drawings, there is shown a lock 1, for a hinged closure 1' , comprising a housing 2, adapted to be mounted on a frame 3, of the closure 1', and seating internally thereof a relatively long throw bolt device 4, reciprocable relative to the housing 2, between respective open (Fig. 1) and closed positions (Figs. 2, 3 and 4) for the closure 1', and retaining means 5, adapted to retain the bolt device 4 in use in the closed position, the bolt device in the closed position being able to span a relatively wide gap between the frame 3 and a fixed gate post 20 (Fig.7)of the closure 1' which post in the embodiment provides a keeper for the bolt device in a locked position thereof.
The housing 2 is in the embodiment of generally rectangular shape and made of zinc galvanised steel, about 4mm thick for strength. The housing 2 is hollow and has an open bottom 6 (Fig. 3) having in-turned, facing spaced apart flanges 7, which with a plastic, in the embodiment nylon, follower 8, which is secured to the bolt device 4 by a shoulder bolt 9, form a co-operable guide means for guiding the bolt device 4 during reciprocation. The bolt device 4 extends through aligned holes in spaced end plates 10 of the housing 2, for manual reciprocation between the Fig. 1 and Fig. 2 positions, to facilitate which it has a manually graspable knob 11, of a suitable material such as Bakelite which is screwed into a tapped bore at the left-hand end (as viewed Figs. 1-3) of the bolt device, which is in the embodiment made of 303 stainless steel. The retaining means 5 is in the embodiment in the form of a key-operated mortice or sash 5-lever deadlock with 600 different combinations. In order to secure the lock 5 with the reciprocable bolt device 4 in the closed and locked position, the bolt device 4 has a longtitudinally extending blind notch 12 cut into it and in which is received a deadlock bolt of the sash deadlock 5, when a key 13 for the deadlock is inserted in a keyhole 14 of the housing 2 and turned in the embodiment to operate the deadlock.
The right-hand face-platelO, as viewed, of the housing 2, has two holes, one above the other in use, to receive respective securing means such as Allen headed bolts 15, which are passed through the frame 3 of the gate 1' to secure the housing 2 and frame 3 together. In an alternative construction, where the frame 3 is of metal, the housing 2 can be secured to it by, for
example, welding.
There is also a biasing means in the form of a stainless steel spring 16, or roll pin, extending transversely of the housing 2, being mounted in a hole 17 in the housing and bearing on the body of the deadlocks to retain the deadlock in position in the housing.
In use, the gate 1' is hinged on hinges 22, mounted via a frame part 18 on a gate post 19, the housing 2 being secured to an opposite frame part 3, which in the closed position of the gate 1' is opposite the fixed or further gate post 20 in which there is a blind hole positioned in substantially vertical alignment with the bolt device 4. To secure the gate 1' in the closed position, the gate 1' is swung to a position in which the opposite frame part 3 is adjacent the further gate post 20 with the bolt device 4 aligned with the hole in the further gate post. The bolt device 4 is then slid to the right manually on grasping the knob 11 so that the end of the device opposite the knob 11 passes through the opposite frame part 3 and into the hole in the further gate post 20. In this position, the gate is held closed. To secure it against opening a key 21 is inserted in the keyhole and turned to operate to throw the deadbolt retaining means S into the recess 12 in the bolt device 4, so preventing it from being retracted, the width of the recess 12 being just sufficient to receive the body of the deadlock bolt.
It will be understood that the bolt device 4 is relatively long as compared to the length of the housing, and has a long throw or distance of movement, so is able to bridge a gap of up to 50mm, typically 20-40mm, between the outer face of the gate frame 3 and the adjacent facing or inner as viewed face of the further gate post 20. Stated in another.way, the long throw bolt device 4 engages into the gate post 20 even when the post 20 is up to 50mm from the gate frame part 3.
In an embodiment (not shown), there may be a metal, usually steel, shield about 5mm thick secured to the opposite frame or further gate post 20 to obviate tampering with the exposed part of the bolt device between the opposite frame 3 and the further gate post 20.
Moreover, since in both embodiments the operative parts of the lock are inside the steel housing 2, the gate closure 1' is protected from unlawful attack by bolt cutters. Thus the bolt device cannot be cropped by thieves using bolt cutters. Also, since the bolt device in the locked position is in the hole on the further gate post, the gate cannot be lifted off the hinges while the bolt is in the locked position.
Where there are double gates, the non-locked gate is usually held in position by a vertically slidable elongate element which locates into a housing set into the ground. To provide for secure lotking, the elongate element has a hole bored into it in alignment with the lock device of the lock, and which lock device is slid to engage the end of the lock device in the hole in the elongate element. In this case there are two locks, one on the frame opposite the secondary gate and one as described with reference to Figs. 1 to 6, on the opposite frame for co-operation with the further gate post.
The gate(s) may comprise metal or wood, and the gate posts may be metal, wood, concrete or the like.
