Abstract
A golf club driver with a mirror finished club face achieved by manufacturing the Titanium golf club driver face to a mirror surface finish of between 1 to 4 Ra (roughness average) µin (microinches) or better. At the moment of impact between a golf club driver face and the golf ball the ball is compressed such that an area as large as 40mm2 can be in contact with the club face. This 40mm2 flat area can be the size of a 10p piece and if the surface finish of the club face is not smooth then the relatively rough surface of the golf club grips the ball and can impart undesirable spin on the golf ball causing ball-flight not intended by the golfer. Preferably the face is formed by polishing, lapping and superfinishing. Optionally the club head can be made from Titanium Ti64.
Description
Description
Longer, $traighter Drive 2.
At the moment of impact between a golf club driver face and the golf ball the ball is compressed such that an area as large as 40mm2 can be in contact with the club face. This 40mm2 flat area can be the size of a lOp piece and if the surface finish of the club face is not smooth then the relatively rough surface of the golf club grips the ball and can impart undesirable spin on the golf ball causing ball-flight not intended by the golfer.
This invention relates to reducing the spin imparted by the golf club on the ball by manufacturing the golf club driver Titanium face to a mirror surface finish of between 1 to 4 Ra Rin or better. The majority of popular golf drivers are manufactured from Titanium Ti64 as Titanium 1164 is commercially available.
The surface finish of a metallic surface is measured using the convention of maximum level of roughness average (Ra). This is normally expressed in micrometers (Microns) or microinches and typically, Titanium golf drivers have a surface finish on the Titanium club face of around SO Ra in and under a microscope the surface resembles the profile as shown below A typical surface finish of 50 Ra pin *. Description (continued)...
The invention will now be described.
Manufacture of the golf club follows current industry standard methods but the finish on a * Longer $traighter Drive club is achieved by employing various surface finishing processes to achieve the desired surface finish of 1 to 4 Ra pin or better. Metal manufacturing techniques and the surface finish possible from all production processes are well known to * metal finishing manufacturers and there are three processes that produce a commercially viable surface finish as described in this application -these are Polishing, Lapping and * Superfinishing. The desired surface finish of I to 4 Ra pin or better is achieved by progressively reducing the surface finish Ra pin of the Titanium club face by first Polishing, then by Lapping and finally by Superfinishing resulting in a surface finish of 1 to 4 Ra pin or better as described on page One of this application. * I
