Abstract
A compressed air generator which may be portable and used as an emergency backup generator. The compressed air generator comprises an electric air compressor pump 2 connected to an accumulator tank 4 to store compressed air. An inlet of an air motor 5 is connected to air tank as a source of power to drive the air motor connected to an electric generator 6 which may power external appliances via an outlet socket 7. The compressor pump may be connected to mains electricity by cord 3 to charge the system. When not connected to mains electricity the output of the electric alternator 6 may be connected to the compressor pump via a control circuit which senses any surplus power available to drive the compressor pump to compress more air and help recharge the tank.
Description
Title: Compsed Air Generator The present invention relates to a compressed air generator.
It is often desirable to have a portable electricity generator, e.g. for use on building sites, or for emergency use in buildings where the mains power has failed. It is known to provide a petrol or diesel generator but this requires a user to carry a supply of petrol or diesel which can be dangerous.
The invention seeks to provide a compressed air generator which can be portable.
According to the present invention there is provided a compressed air generator comprising: a) an electric air compressor pump to compress air, b) a tank to store compressed air, c) a compressed air motor adapted to be driven by compressed air in the tank, and d) an electric generator adapted to be driven by the compressed air motor, in use the air compressor pump being used to charge the tank with compressed air, and the compressed air used to drive the compressed air motor and electric generator to generate eLectricity.
Preferably the output of the electric generator can be connected to the electric air compressor pump whereby any excess electricity generated can be used to compress more air to help recharge the tank.
Preferably the air compressor pump, tank, compressed air motor and electric generator are mounted on a common frame or in a common housing.
Preferably the air compressor pump is adapted to be powered off the mains in addition to the electric generator.
Preferably the electric generator has a power output substantially greater than the power input requirement of the air compressor pump.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawing showing a schematic view.
Referring to the drawing there is shown a compressed air generator 1.
An electric air compressor pump 2 is provided to compress air. Pump 2 may be powered through an electric mains lead with plug 3. Pump 2 has an electric motor 2A driving an air compressor unit 2B.
An air cylinder storage tank 4 has an inlet valve 4A connected to deliver compressed air from unit 28. Air storage tank 4 has an air outlet valve 4W Air compressor pump may charge the tank with compressed air up 300psi.
Outlet valve 48 is connected to a compressed air motorS adapted to be driven by compressed air in the tank.
An electric generator 6, such as an alternator is adapted to be driven by the compressed air motor to generate electricity to an outlet socket 7 to power an electrical appliance.
In use the air compressor pump 2 is used to charge the tank 4 with compressed air, and the compressed air is used to drive the compressed air motor 5 and electric generator 6 to generate electricity.
When the air compressor pump 2 is not connected to the mains through lead 3, the output of the electric generator 6 can be connected to the input of the electric air compressor pump through a control circuit 8. Circuit 8 senses when any surplus power is generated by generator 6 whereby any excess electricity generated can be used to compress more air to help recharge the tank.
Preferably the air compressor pump, tank, compressed air motor and electric generator are mounted as a portable unit on wheels 9 and a tow handle 10. Alternatively they may be mounted on a common frame (not shown) or in a common housing (not shown) which may have sound deadening qualities. The overall size may be around 4ft high and 5ft square footprint, although smaller and bigger dimensions are also envisaged.
Preferably the electric generator has a power output substantially greater than the power input requirement of the air compressor pump. For example the electric generator may be 20kva and the air compressor pump may be 2kva.
The invention may take a form different to that specifically described above. For example the air compressor pump 2 need not be connected to the electric generator and excess electricity generated would then not be used to compress more air to help recharge the tank. Also the socket 7 and control unit may in practice be mounted on the generator.
Further modifications will be apparent to those skilled in the art without departing from the scope of the present invention. a 5
