Abstract
A calf trough comprises a lid or cover to protect the contents from the weather or other animals. The cover is hinged to the back of the trough. The feed area of the trough may be split in half to allow for both dry food and milk to be fed in the same trough. The cover may be raised 12 inches from a closed position by means of a 12â long piece of box section which is supported on the front of the trough. The trough can be also fully opened and tied back with a rope.

Description and use of cover for trough
On using the trough, we found many problems and a cover was needed to: A. Protect the contents from the elements whether it was dry food or milk.
B. We found that any animal that was found wondering the yard would help themselves to the feedstuffs in the trough leaving none for the calves to eat. This would stress the calves as they then went all day with very little if anything to eat.
If this continued they would not gain weight and thrive.
C. The feed area would be better split in half to allow for both dry food and milk to be fed in the same trough. This created a problem with food getting spoiled by the weather. Therefore to use the trough to feed calves milk could not be done as a drainage hole could not be drill in the bottom. But in rainy conditions the trough would fill up with water which needed empting of rain before the calves could be fed. This was very time consuming. The cover made it easier to feed the animals without wasting time having to empty the water first.
D. The cover can also be raised 12 inches from the closed position by the use of a hinged 12" long piece of box section. This box section folds away when closed.
When the cover is open the box section is secured by dropping it into a larger piece of box section that is welded to the edge of the front of the trough. This saves time allowing food to be placed in the trough without having to lift the cover from its closed position.
E. The cover can also be raised up out of the way and tied back with a rope. This is useful when calves need a larger amount of food as they grow. When the cover is lifted up a more widespread variety of feedstuffs can be placed into the trough by the use of a mechanical loading shovel. This made light work of feeding much larger calves.
F. The cover was made of 1" box section. The large area was covered by galvanised sheet.
Please transfer initial payment to other paper work. Claim
My claim is on the design of a trough and cover where the shape allows the wet or dry food within the tough to be easily reached by small calves and the cover protects the food from the vermin and the weather. * * S... *
