Abstract

The turning device described herein presents an alternative to the conventional wheel and associated steering mechanism. The turning device has a surface gripping member (23) which contacts a surface in use. The frictional and contact forces between the surface gripping member (23) and the surface can move an object to which the turning device is attached relative to the surface. Alternatively, the turning device may remain in situ and act on a surface of an object which is required to be deflected. Only a portion (65) of the surface gripping member (23) need be laterally deflected to turn an object. A deflection means (71) is provided in order to deflect the surface gripping member (23). The turninng device has applications in cars, golf buggies, factory machinery such as forklift trucks or transportation devices and luggage or parcel sorting devices.
