Abstract

An electronic display module, in particular an electronic shelf label that can be used in a retail environment, comprises an LCD display screen 14 that is used to display visual images under the control of an electronic processor or display screen driver. A bracket 8a, 8b is used to mount the display screen 14 at the edge of a shelf. The display may be powered by an internal battery or it may be connectable to an external power supply. A memory is provided for storing visual image data and the display may be able to read data from a memory card, e.g. SD card. A sensor may be provided so that images are displayed in response to the sensor detecting the presence of a person in the vicinity of the display. The display is preferably mounted to a support frame with the display driver located in an enclosure part 6 of the support frame and the support frame is formed integrally with the bracket. Magnets 10 may be provided to secure the display to the underside of a shelf.

Description

TITLE
Electronic display modules
DESCRIPTION
Technical Field
The present invention relates to electronic display modules, and in particular to those that can be used to display advertising and promotional content to shoppers.
Summary of the Invention
The present invention provides an electronic display module comprising: a display screen; a display screen driver for displaying visual images on the display screen; and a bracket adapted to mount the display screen at the edge of a shelf in use.
The display screen may have any suitable construction (e.g. liquid crystal display (LCD) or thin-film transistor LCD (TFT-LCD)) and be of any suitable size and shape.
The display screen may be mounted to a support frame or housing. The support frame or housing may be adapted such that the angle or orientation of the display screen is fixed or adjustable. The bracket may be formed as an integral part of the support frame or housing. The bracket may be clipped onto the shelf or secured to it using any suitable attachment means such as magnets, mechanical fixings or adhesive pads,
for example.
The visual images may be stationary or moving and different visual images may be displayed sequentially one after the other or with variable interval settings. The electronic display module may further comprise a sensor and the display screen driver can be adapted to display visual images on the display screen in response to the sensor detecting the presence of an individual (e.g. a shopper) within the vicinity of the electronic display module. Visual images can be displayed only when an individual is detected or for a period of time after an individual is detected. At other times the electronic display module can be placed in a "standby mode" to reduce power consumption.
The display screen driver may include one or more electronic (digital) processors and associated circuitry mounted on a printed circuit board. The display screen driver may be integrated with the display screen or located remote from the display screen and connected to it by any wired or wireless means. In a preferred arrangement the display screen driver is located inside an enclosure part of a support frame or housing that is positioned underneath the shelf in use.
The display screen driver may optionally include an internal memory for storing visual image data and/or have the ability to receive a memory card (e.g. an SD/MMC card) or other memory storage device and to read any visual image data stored thereon. Visual image data can also be uploaded to the display screen driver by a wireless connection, optionally by using the Internet.
The display screen driver may optionally be operated under the control of control unit, which can be an integral part of the electronic display module or remotely located.
Electronic signals to control the display of visual images on the display screen can be sent from the control unit to the display screen driver. The control unit may also determine or update the visual images that are to be displayed. For example, if the electronic display module is designed to display advertising and promotional content to shoppers, such content typically being related to the products or items at the adjacent shelf location, then content may be updated by the control unit so that different visual images are displayed if the products or items are changed or if alternative content is to be used. In a typical retail environment a plurality of electronic display modules will be used and they can all be individually controlled by a central control unit.
The electronic display module may further comprise an internal battery.
Alternatively, the electronic display module may further comprise power cables connectable to an external power supply.
The present invention includes a shelf having an edge, and wherein the display screen of an electronic display module as described above is mounted at the edge by the bracket. The shelf may form part of a display unit or merchandising gondola, for
example.
The shelf may optionally include an integrated power supply and the electronic display module includes power cables connected to the integrated power supply.
Drawings Figure 1 is a perspective view of a support frame of an electronic display module according to the present invention; Figure 2 is plan view of the support frame of Figure 1; Figure 3 is a side cross section view of the support frame of Figure 1; Figure 4 is a perspective view of an electronic display module according to the present invention where a display screen and outer frame have been secured to the support frame; Figure 5 is a side cross section view of the electronic display module of Figure 4; and Figure 6 is a front view of the electronic display module of Figure 4.
With reference to the drawings, a plastics support frame 2 includes an angled screen mounting part 4, an enclosure part 6 and bracket parts 8a, 8b. An upper surface of each bracket part 8a, 8b includes a pair of magnets 10 that allow the support frame 2 to be releasably and securely attached to the underside of a steel shelf S (Figures 3, 5 and 6). However, it will be readily appreciated that other fixings may be used instead of the magnets.
An electronic processor 12 is located inside the enclosure part 6 and functions as a display screen driver for displaying visual images on a thin-film transistor liquid crystal display (TFT-LCD) screen 14. The electronic processor 12 includes a card reader (not shown) that allows the display screen driver to read visual image data stored on a SD/MMC card that has been inserted into the card reader. The electronic processor 12 is connected to the screen 14 by a suitable cable or lead (not shown).
The screen 14 is mounted within a curved outer frame 16 that is mounted to the screen mounting part 4 in such a way that the angle or orientation of the screen can be adjusted with respect to the support frame 2.
An internal battery (not shown) is used to provide power to the screen 14 and the electronic processor 12. If the shelf S includes an integrated power supply then this can be used to provide power to the electronic display module by means of a suitable power cable.
