Abstract
A teat 11 for an infant's feeding bottle or pacifier has a neck portion 17 around which are provided a multiplicity of soft bristles 19. The bristle may be integrally moulded with the teat, or may be provided on a strip 18 of thin flexible material bonded to the teat surface. The bristles provide stimulation for the tip of the tongue and the jaws between which the teat is gripped, and can be used to hold various substances such as teething gels to be applied to the teeth or gum surfaces of the infant.

TEAT FOR INFANT FEEDING BOTTLE OR PACIFIER
This invention relates to a resilient teat for an infant's feeding bottle or for a dummy or pacifier.
Teats of the type to which the invention relates are generally made of a relatively soft elastomeric material such as natural rubber or silicone rubber.
Such teats generally have an enlarged or bulbous end to be received in an infant's mouth, with a narrower neck to be gripped between the jaws. In the case of a feeding bottle the teat widens out from the neck, terminating in an annular flange by means of which the teat is clamped to the top of a feeding bottle. In the case of a dummy or pacifier the end of the teat remote from the bulbous end is mounted on a flat or slightly curved shield large enough to prevent entry into the infant's mouth, a handle or the like being secured to the other side of the shield.
Much thought has over the years been given to the effect of various designs of teat on aspects of a child's development, such as teething, jaw and tongue movement and breathing. In the case of bottle teats the design of the teat itself can have a considerable effect on feeding.
WO 03/063756 A discloses a bottle or pacifier teat comprising a single piece of resilient material comprising a bulb at one end of a tubular neck whose opposite end is mounted to the structural body of the pacifier or baby bottle, with at least one small protuberance integrally formed on the neck to act as an exteroceptive element to be searched for by the tip of a child's tongue, stimulating the movement of the mandible and the slide of the protruded tongue.
It is thought that stimulating such active movement of the tongue helps to maintain an air seal around the teat, stimulating breathing through the nose.
GB-A-2292688 discloses a dummy in which small projections are formed around the neck of the teat which collectively form a gum massager.
The present invention provides a teat for an infant's feeding bottle or pacifier, the teat having a neck portion for engagement between an infant's jaws, wherein there are provided around said neck portion a multiplicity of soft bristles.
The bristles around the neck, as well as providing stimulation of the tip of the tongue and of the jaws between which the teat is gripped, can be used to hold various substances such as teething gels or toothpaste, which can otherwise be quite difficult to apply to a small infant's mouth. During teething, gum surfaces can be painful and various soothing or mildly anaesthetic gels can be applied, but may not be retained in the mouth long enough to be fully effective. By applying a gel or the like to the bristles around the neck of the teat and inserting the teat in an infant's mouth, the gel on opposite sides of the teat will come into contact with the front upper and lower jaws where the first teeth come through. Action of the tongue, stimulated by the bristles, will then help to spread the gel along the gums.
The bristles preferably have a length in the range from 0.25 to 2mm, suitably about 1mm. The diameter of the bristles is preferably in a range from 0.05 to 1 mm, more preferably 0.2 to 0.5mm. The bristles preferably extend over a length of from 5 to 10mm of the neck of the teat, in a direction parallel to its longitudinal axis. The distribution of bristles is preferably in a range from 50 to bristles per cm2, more preferably 100 to 150 per cm2.
The bristles may be integrally moulded with the teat, or may be applied to an existing teat, for example by being formed on one side of a strip of plastics material the other side of which is adhesively bonded to the teat surface.
Preferred embodiments of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings wherein: Figure 1 is a perspective view of an infant's dummy or pacifier having a teat in accordance with the invention and Figure 2 is a side elevation of a bottle teat in accordance with another embodiment of the invention.
Referring first to Figure 1, a child's dummy or pacifier generally indicated by (10) comprises a teat (11) of elastomeric material such as natural or silicone rubber, mounted on a shield (14) to the opposite side of which is connected a handle (16). The shield (14) is dimensioned to prevent entry into the child's mouth, and typically has a minimum dimension transverse to the teat axis of about 4cm.
The teat (11) has a widened end (12) to be received in an infant's mouth, and a narrower neck portion generally indicated by (17), adjacent the shield mounting.
Around the neck portion is a strip (18) of thin flexible plastics material, bonded to the teat surface with a suitable non-toxic adhesive.
On the outer surface of the strip is a multiplicity of soft bristles (19), which may have been bonded to the strip or integrally formed with it. Although the bristles are sufficiently resilient to project outwardly when dry, they are soft enough not to prick or irritate the infant's gums. The distribution is sufficiently dense to enable substances such as toothpaste or teething gel to be applied to the strip and retained by the bristles when inserted into the infant's mouth.
The adhesive bonding the strip (18) to the teat surface is insoluble in water and sterilising solutions, so that the teat can be sterilised with disinfectant or with boiling water.
In the bottle teat shown in Figure 2, generally indicated by (20), bristles (29) are provided on a neck portion (27) of the teat, between a bulbous end (24) and a widened end (22) around the extremity of which is provided an annular flange to enable the teat to be clamped to the mouth of a feeding bottle.
The teat is of conventional design, with small holes (25) in the bulbous end (24) to allow the passage of milk, water or other beverages.
The bristles (29) extend over an axial length of about 1cm of the neck of the teat, and can be integrally moulded with the teat or bonded to an existing teat surface.
During feeding, an infant's jaws close on the neck portion of the teat which results in a massaging of the gums or emerging teeth. As in the case of the pacifier of Figure 1, soothing gels or other substances can be applied to these bristles so as to be applied to the gums during feeding.
Claims (9)
- CLAIMS: 1. A teat for an infant's feeding bottle or pacifier, the teat having a neck portion for engagement between an infants jaws, wherein there are provided around said neck portion a multiplicity of soft bristles.
- 2. A teat according to claim wherein the bristles have a length in the range from 0.25 to 2 mm.
- 3. A teat according to claim I or claim 2 wherein the bristles have a diameter from 0.05 to 1 mm.
- 4. A teat according to claim 3 wherein the bristle diameter is from 0.2 to 0.5 mm.
- 5. A teat according to any preceding claim where the bristles extend over a length from 5 to 10 mm of the neck of the teat.C\J
- 6. A teat according to any preceding claim wherein the distribution of 0 bristles is in a range from 50 to 200 per cm2.
- 7. A teat according to claim 6 wherein the distribution of bristles is in a range from 100 to 150 per cm2.
- 8. A teat according to any preceding claim wherein the bristles are integrally moulded with the teat.
- 9. A teat according to any one of claims I to 7 wherein the bristles are formed on one side of a strip of plastics material, the other side of which is adhesively bonded to the teat surface.
