Abstract
A worktop portable oven with an oven cavity and an oven heating unit demountably mountable in the oven cavity. The heating unit comprises a heating unit housing, an electrical control system, an impeller, a motor for driving the impeller and a heating element. The heating element is enclosed by a cover plate 10 and a grille 2; the cover plate being designed to reflect radiation towards the oven cavity and to protect the control system of the heating unit. The grille may be mountable to the cover plate by means of cooperative apertures 23 and push or spring release clips 22 associated with the cover plate and grille. The grille and cover plate may comprise means to support the heating element. The heating element may be a halogen light. An electrical mounting arrangement is also disclosed for a heating element having two ends at which are formed electrical contacts for the element. The mounting arrangement comprises a unitary housing having a plug assembly in electrical communication with the electrical contacts of the heating element and a socket assembly adapted for electrical cooperation with the plug assembly and electrically connected to the control system.
Description
ELECTRIC OVENS
The present invention relates to electric ovens, particularly worktop portable ovens of the type described in US6747250.
US6747250 describes a portable oven in which a demountable heating unit is seatable on a glass bowl which serves as an oven cavity. The heating unit includes a circular heating element, in the form of a halogen lamp and a fan to ensure uniform heating of the contents of the oven cavity, together with the control electronics for the oven.
The present invention seeks to provide a more readily serviceable heating unit.
Accordingly, the present invention provides an electric oven of the type comprising an oven body defining an oven cavity and an oven heating unit demountably mountable upon the oven body, wherein the oven heating unit comprises a heating unit housing, an electrical control system, an impeller, a motor for driving the impeller and a heating element. Preferably the heating element is a halogen lamp.
In one aspect, the present invention provides an electrical mounting arrangement for the heating element. The heating element has two ends at which are formed electrical contacts for the element. The mounting arrangement comprises a unitary housing having a plug assembly in electrical communication with the electrical contacts of the heating element. The mounting arrangement further comprises a socket assembly adapted for electrical cooperation with the plug assembly and electrically connected to the control system.
In a second aspect, the present invention provides a grille for the heating element of the oven heating unit. The oven heating unit includes a cover plate operatively above the heating element which acts to reflect radiation towards the oven cavity and protects the control system from excessive heating. The grille, in combination with the cover plate, encloses the heating element. The grille is mountable to the cover plate by means of cooperative apertures and push or spring-release clips associated with the cover plate and grille. Suitably, the clips are formed with the grille.
In one embodiment, the cover plate further comprises mounting means to support the heating element in a spaced configuration between the cover plate and the grille.
In a preferred embodiment, the grille further comprises mounting means to support the heating element.
The above and other aspects of the present invention will now be described in further detail, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a perspective view of an embodiment of a heating element assembly in accordance with the first aspect of the present invention; Figure 2 is an exploded side sectional view of the arrangement of Figure 1; Figure 3 is an exploded perspective view of an embodiment of a grille and cover plate assembly in accordance with the second aspect of the present invention; Figure 4 is a side view of the embodiment of Figure 3; Figure 5 is a perspective view of a modification of the cover plate of the embodiment of Figure 3; and Figure 6 is an inverted perspective view of a modification of the grille of the embodiment of Figure 3.
The present invention relates ovens of the type described in detail in US6747250 to which further reference should be made. We will describe the differences between the apparatus described there and the present invention.
Figures 1 and 2 illustrate the first aspect of the invention. The heating unit of the oven (not shown) includes a cover plate 10 which acts to reflect heat into the oven cavity (not shown) and to protect the other components of the heating unit. The cover plate includes a central aperture 11 through which passes the spindle of a motor and on which is mounted an impeller or fan (not shown) which acts to ensure uniform heat distribution to and around the oven cavity. In view of the fan, the heating element 12 of such an oven is typically circular, as illustrated such that the fan sits within the circular heating element. Most suitably, heating element 12 is of the halogen lamp type.
Heating element 12 has an electrical connection at each end of the halogen lamp.
These connections are electrically coupled to respective conductive pins 13 and mounted in a spaced relationship within a plug housing 14 to form a plug.
A socket housing 15 is mounted conveniently to cover plate 10 to receive pins 13 of plug housing 14. Socket housing 15 includes electrical connectors coupled to the control unit of the oven in a conventional manner.
With this arrangement, should it be necessary to replace the heating element 12, for example, in the event of failure, the element can be replaced easily by the user without requiring the assistance of an electrical contractor.
The second aspect of the present invention is illustrated in Figures 3 to 6. In U56747250, a grille to protect the halogen heating lamp is formed as a metal disc screwed to mounting points formed on the heating unit suitably on the cover plate.
The present invention provides a screwless mounting by forming a grille 20 to have a surrounding grille wall 21 and including a pair of grille clips 22 which, in use, cooperate with apertures 23 formed in cover plate 10. Suitably, to allow such an arrangement, grille 20 is formed by pressing a sheet steel blank. In an alternative embodiment not shown, clips are formed from the cover plate and cooperate with corresponding apertures formed in suitable surfaces on the grille.
A modification is illustrated in Figure 5 in which support brackets 24 are provided on the cover plate 10 to support the heating element (omitted for clarity). A preferred embodiment is shown in Figure 6 in which grille 20 is provided with a support brackets 25 for supported the heating element 12 which is of the type described above having a plug construction. As such, the entire grille and heating element assembly can be provided as a user-replaceable unit and thereby avoids risks of the user touching the halogen lamp 12, which can cause a substantial reduction in lifetime for the lamp.
The aspects of the present invention provide an arrangement by which the heating element of an oven can be easily and conveniently replaced by the user, thereby avoiding the need for the unit to be returned to the manufacturer or the need for professional repair services.
Claims (9)
- CLAIMS: 1. An electrical oven of the type comprising an oven body defining an oven cavity and an oven heating unit demountably mountable upon the oven body, wherein the oven heating unit comprises a heating unit housing, an electrical control system, an impeller, a motor for driving the impeller and a heating element wherein the oven comprises a grille for the heating element of the oven heating unit and the oven heating unit includes a cover plate operatively above the heating element which acts to reflect radiation towards he oven cavity and protects the control system from excessive heating, arranged such that the grille, in combination with the cover plate, encloses the heating element.
- 2. An electric oven as claimed in claim 1 wherein the grille is mountable to the cover plate by means of cooperative apertures and push or spring-release clips associated with the cover plate and grille.
- 3. An electric oven as claimed in claim 2 wherein the clips are formed with the L() grille.
- 4. An electric oven as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 3 wherein the cover plate further comprises mounting means to support the heating element in a spaced configuration between the cover plate and the grille.
- 5. An electric oven as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 4 wherein the grille further comprises mounting means to support the heating element.
- 6. An electric oven of the type comprising an oven body defining an oven cavity and an oven heating unit demountably mountable upon the oven body, wherein the oven heating unit comprises a heating unit housing, an electrical control system, an impeller, a motor for driving the impeller and a heating element having two ends at which are formed electrical contacts for the element wherein the oven includes an electrical mounting arrangement for the heating element comprising a unitary housing having a plug assembly in electrical communication with the electrical contacts of the heating element, and further comprising a socket assembly adapted for electrical cooperation with the plug assembly and electrically connected to the control system.
- 7. An electric oven as claimed in claim 6 and in any one of claims 1 to 5.
- 8. An electric oven as claimed in any preceding claim wherein the heating element is a halogen lamp.
- 9. An electric oven substantially as herein described with reference to Figures 1 and 2 and/or Figures 3 to 6 of the accompanying drawings. L()
