Abstract

In a location monitoring device and system a mobile device determines the network area in which the mobile device is located from network address parameters (such as a Cell_ID) in messages sent by the wireless communication network; and accumulates over a period of time data indicating for each network area in which it is determined that the mobile device is located, the corresponding network area parameter and the amount of time spent by the mobile device in that network area over said period of time. A location profile is generated from the accumulated data. This location profile identifies the geographical areas in which the mobile device spends most time. The location profile may be generated either by the mobile device itself, or by a remote network device. A content provider may use the location profiles to target suitable advertisements.
