Abstract
246,817. I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.- Ges. Jan. 30, 1925, [Convention date]. Alkylated aromatic sulphonic acids.-Butylated aromatic sulphonic acids are prepared by the action of n-butyl alcohol on aromatic sulphonic acids with or without a condensing agent, or on the salts of such acids in presence of a condens. ing agent, or on aromatic hydrocarbons with simultaneous or subsequent sulphonation. An example shows the sulphonation of naphthalene and subsequent reaction with the butyl alcohol in presence of sulphuric acid, the butylated aromatic sulphonic acid being separated and, if desired, neutralized with alkali to obtain the sodium salt. A further example shows the treatment of naphthalene with butyl alcohol in presence of sulphuric acid and the similar working up of the calcium or sodium salt. The sodium salts are excellent wetting agents. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) includes other examples in which benzene and toluene are the starting materials, the procedure being parallel to that in the example first mentioned above. This subjectmatter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
