Abstract
A cleaning apparatus is fitted into an aperture in the hull 7 of a boat in place of the speed transducer in order to clean the hull around the aperture to improve the working of the transducer. The apparatus comprises a unit body 6 on which is mounted a blade 4 able to be raised using a plunger 5 so that the blade contacts the hull around the aperture. The unit can then be rotated such that the blade removes barnacles and the like from the hull surface. The blade may be made of stainless steel and may be attached to the unit body at two points, one of which is fixed and one of which is movable.
Description
Boat hull cleaner for speed transducer.
This invention relates to a unit for cleaning the underside of a vessel around the opening in the hull provided for the transducer used to measure the speed of the vessel through the water.
When a boat is launched into the water it will inevitably become fouled by underwater organisms, e.g. barnacles, seaweed, etc.. It is common to provide an opening in the boat's hull into which is fitted a transducer housing and the organisms attach and grow on the hull around the outer section of the housing. This disrupts the flow of water passing the transducer wheel giving inaccurate speed readings This can be rectified by either lifting the boat out of the water or by divers going into the sea under the boat. Both of these operations are time consuming, expensive, and restricted by location.
To overcome these problems, the present invention proposes a unit for cleaning the hull of a boat around an aperture in which a speed transducer housing can be removably fitted, the unit being able to be fitted into the aperture in place of the transducer housing, the unit including a movable blade which can be operated from within the boat so as to clean undesirable organisms from the hull of the boat around the aperture. -The blade may be of stainless steel and may be attached to the unit at two points one of which is fixed and the other mobile. Preferably the blade is moved into its cleaning position by pulling up on a plunger handle to engage the blade with the hull of the boat. The whole unit may then be rotated through 360 degrees to clean the hull. The unit body may be made from stainless steel using 0-rings of sea water resistant rubber. The connecting rods may be of nylon.
The invention will now be described solely by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 shows a cross-section through the cleaner unit separate from the hull of the boat, Figure 2 shows the cleaner unit fitted into the aperture in the hull of the boat and with the blade disengaged, Figure 3 shows the unit fitted to the hull of the boat and with the blade in position for cleaning.
In Figure 1, the cleaner unit comprises a cylindrical unit body 6 within which is a fixed connecting rod 1 held by a split ring 2. A stainless steel cleaning blade 4 is hinged to the rod 1. A connecting rod 3 is hinged to the blade 4 with a hinge moving in a slot 8 in the blade such that by moving a handle 5 threaded onto the rod 3 up and down, the blade can be raised and lowered. In use, the speed transducer housing is removed from the aperture in the hull 7 of the boat and, as shown in Figure 2, the cleaner unit is fitted into the aperture and held in position by a nut. The handle 5 can then be lifted, as shown in Figure 3, to raise the blade into contact with the hull. Finally, the handle 5 can be twisted through 360 degrees or more such that the whole unit rotates and the blade 4 removes barnacles from the hull of the boat around the aperture. 2.
