Drilling - machines.- Holes of substantial diameter are drilled in coal or rock perpendicular to the working face by a machine comprising a frame 5, Fig. 1, supported on jacks 7 by means of lugs 6. The frame carries an engine 10 driving a crank shaft 12 which through gearing 13, 14, rotates a sleeve 15, the sleeve carrying rollers 18 engaging helical fins 17 on a drill tube 16 to rotate the latter. At the rear of the drill tube is a frame 31 mounted on ball bearings and held against rotation by a rod projecting from the frame 5, the frame 31 carrying spaced pulleys 25; a cable 21 passes from a fixed point over pulleys 24, 25 to a drum 26 frictionally coupled to a worm wheel 27 driven by a worm 28 on the sleeve 14, and the drill tube is thereby advanced. To return the drill tube, the drum 26 is uncoupled and the drill tube is held against rotation by locking it to the frame 31, the rollers 18 then returning the drill tube by pressure on the fins 17. In a modified machine, the drill tube is replaced by a solid bar, the two rear jacks by a supporting shoe and the engine 10 by a rotary motor driving the sleeve through worm gearing. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) describes a further form, Fig. 4, (Cancelled), in which the tool holder 55 is supported by a guide 53 held between jacks 54 and is carried by a frame 50 mounted on wheels 51. A motor 56 acts through gearing 57 - - 60 to drive the tool holder, which also, through worm wheel 61 drives a drum 62 to wind on a cable 63 and thereby advance the tool holder. Further modifications are also described in which pinions engage the fins 17 or drill tube 16 to advance the latter, or such advance is effected by hand controlled means. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
