Abstract

A door closer assembly 10 comprising a track 20 to be mounted on a transom 14 of a doorway, and a door closer 13 for mounting on a door, an arm 23 being pivotally connected to the door closer 13, wherein the arm is provided with a slider block 22, the slider block being received in the track and being slideable along the track in response to movement of the door. The door closer is preferably concealed and mounted within a recess at the top of the door. The slider block may have a wedge shape cross section which retains it within the runner 20. The arm may be bent such that the track is laterally offset a rotating member, connected to the arm 6, of the door closer in the closed position. A compact door closer is provided which requires little or no modification, e.g. mortising, to the doorframe.

Description

Title: Door Closer Assembly Descrirtion of Invention This invention relates to a door closer assembly.
It is known to provide a concealed door closer assembly in which a track is provided in a transom of a door and is connected to a door closer assembly.
Such door closer assemblies are disadvantageous in that the transom must be morticed to receive the track, and mounting the slider within the track can be awkward. The morticing can cause a fire hazard in wooden door frame 1 5 assemblies and is also inconvenient to carry out. This is particularly the case where the door and frame are already installed, when not only must the upper part of the door be morticed to receive the door closer, but the transom must be cut away in situ.
An aim of the present invention is to reduce or overcome one or more of the above problems.
In accordance with the present invention, we provide a door closer assembly comprising a track to be mounted on a transom of a doorway, and a door closer for mounting on a door, an arm being pivotally connected to the door closer, wherein the arm is provided with a slider block, the slider block being received in the track and being slideable along the track in response to movement of the door.
The slider block may be pivotally connected to the arm.
The track may have a mouth, and an upper part of the slider block may have a width greater than the width of the mouth to retain the slider block in the track.
The slide block may be generally wedge-shaped in cross-section.
The width of the track may be less than the distance between the arm and an edge of the door when the door is in a closed position.
The slider block may be movable between a first position, when the door is in a closed position and a second position when the door is in an open position.
The distance between the first position and the second position may be less than the width of the door.
When the door is in a closed position, the pivotal connection between the arm and the door closer may be located between the first position and a hinged side of the door.
The door closer may be mounted within an upper part of the door.
The door and transom may define a volume such that when the door is in a closed position, the arm and track are concealed within the volume.
An embodiment of the present invention will now be described by way of example only with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein; Figure 1 is a cross section through a door having a door assembly embodying the present invention, Figure 2 is a plan view of an end of the arm of the embodiment of figure 1, Figure 3 is an end view of the arm and slide block of the embodiment of figure 1, and Figure 4 is a plan view of the door and door assembly of figure 1 showing the door in an open position, a closed position and an intermediate position.
Referring now to Figure 1, a cross-section through a door and door assembly embodying the present invention is generally shown at 10. In this example, a door is generally shown at 11, provided with a recess 12 in an upper part thereof in which a door closer 13 is received. A transom 14 is disposed above the door, having a recess generally shown at 15. The recess 15 has a top face 16 and a side face 17. In the closed position, in the present example, a first edge 18 of the door abuts the side face 17 of the transom 14, whilst an upstanding part 19 of the other edge of the door 11 substantially closes the recess 15, defining a substantially closed volume. A track 20 is provided mounted within the recess 15 abutting the upper surface 16 of the recess 15, and in this example this side surface 17 of the recess 15. The track 20 is surface-mounted, such that no morticing of the transom 14 is required. The track 20 is provided with a mouth 21. A slider block 22 is provided received within the track 20, an upper part 22a of the slider block 22 having a width created around the width of the mouth 21 such that the slider block 22 is retained within the track 20. In this example, the slider block 22 is wedge-shaped in cross-section, as is the internal surface of the track 20.
As shown in more detail with reference to Figures 2 and 3, the slider block 22 is mounted on an arm 23 which is pivotally connected to a pivot head 24 connected to the door closer 13. A support bracket 25 connects the slider block 22 to the arm 23. The bracket 25 is pivotally connected to the arm 23 as shown at 26, while an end 23a of the arm 23 is rounded, thus permitting relative pivotal movement between the slider block 22 and the arm 23. The slider block 22 is connected to the bracket 25 in this example by rivets 27.
Referring now to Figure 4, the door 11 and door assembly 10 are generally shown in plan view in a plurality of positions. The door is pivotally connected to a side member of the door frame 28 by one or more hinges, generally shown at 29. The door is shown in a closed position generally shown at A, an open position generally shown at B and an intermediate position generally shown at C. When the door is in its closed position A, the slider block 22 is at a first position D at one end of the track 20, as the door is opened, its passes through an intermediate position C, the slider block 22 moves along the track to a intermediate position, here shown at E for example, until it reaches a second position F, corresponding to the open position of the door. It will be apparent that the distance between the first position D and the second position F is substantially less than the width of the door 11. The pivotal connection 24 between the arm 13 and the door closer 30 is positioned such that, when the door is in its closed position A, the pivotal connection is located between the first position F, corresponding to the end of the track 20, and the edge 11 a of the door which is connected via hinges 29 to the door frame 28.
Accordingly, it will be apparent that the door closer assembly can be simply located within the recess 15 between the door 11 and the transom 14 without requiring morticing of the transom 14. This is achieved by having a relatively short, compact track which is of a width such that when the door is in a closed position, the track 20 is disposed between the side face 17 of the transom 14, and the arm 23. The relatively short length of the track 20 permits an enlarged pivot head 24 to be provided, to connect to the arm 23 to the door closer 13, permitting a larger closing force to act on the arm 23 to close the door. When the door is away from the closed position A, there is a torque exerted by the door closer 13 on the arm 23, acting in such a way as to urge the door from its open position back towards the closed position A. The angled faces of the slider block 22 ensure that the slider block 22 does not become disengaged from the track 20 during operation, and, when side forces in a horizontal direction are applied to the slider block 22 during operation of the door closer, the slider block 22 will be forced slightly upwards relative to the track 20 such that a side face and the top face of the slider block 22 engage with the corresponding interior surfaces of the track 20.
When used in this specification and claims, the terms "comprises" and "comprising" and variations thereof mean that the specified features, steps or integers are included. The terms are not to be interpreted to exclude the presence of other features, steps or components.
