Abstract

A beverage receptacle assembly comprises a cup 10, a lid 20 and a decorative element 30 wherein the lid comprises a reflective surface 22 at least partially surrounding an aperture 23 and wherein, in use, a reflection of the decorative element is visible to a user of the beverage receptacle assembly in the reflective surface. The decorative element may be a straw; the reflective surface may be concave and may include a plurality of facets 22 including long edges 221 and short edges 222 and 223. The reflective surface may be mirrored and the straw may be patterned and or multicolored.

Description

A beverage receptacle assembly, lid and lid assembly.
This invention relates to a beverage receptacle assembly, a lid and a lid assembly. In particular it relates to drinking cups and parts thereof.
Drinking cups, including those with lids, and straws are well known. There is a market desire to provide novel and entertaining drinking cups, in particular for use by children. It is a requirement that such drinking cups provide a safe means for containing and dispensing a beverage whilst providing an attractive and distinctive appearance. It is also necessary that the cups are simply to use and easy to clean.
Accordingly the invention of the present application provides a beverage receptacle assembly comprising: a cup; a lid; and a decorative element; wherein the lid comprises a reflective surface at least partially surrounding an aperture; and wherein, in use, a reflection of the decorative element is visible to a user of the beverage receptacle assembly in the reflective surface.
An advantage of the beverage receptacle assembly of present invention is that, in use, the decorative element is received in the aperture and the decorative element is reflected in the reflective surface which provides the user with a more entertaining drinking experience. Moreover, in use, the user may rotate the decorative element such that the reflection of the decorative element appears to rotate.
Thus, a novel drinking experience is obtained.
In one embodiment, the decorative element is a straw and the aperture is adapted to receive the straw.
Preferably, the reflective surface is concave.
Advantageously, the concave surface at least partially surrounding the aperture makes insertion of the straw into the aperture easier, in particular for children or those with limited mobility.
The reflective surface may be smooth but preferably comprises a plurality of facets. In this way the faceted surfaces reflect not only the decorative element directly but also indirectly via one or more of the other faceted surfaces producing a visual effect akin to a kaleidoscope.
In particular, rotation of the decorative element in the aperture produces a shimmering, ever changing pattern in the reflective surface.
Preferably, the reflective surface encircles the aperture.
Preferably the reflective surface comprises a mirrored surface.
The reflective surface may be formed from a metal, plastic, glass or metallised material.
Preferably the straw comprises a patterned and or multi-coloured surface.
An open end of the cup may be angled relative to a base of the cup such that the open end of the cup comprises an elliptical rim; and wherein a rim of the lid may comprise a matching elliptical shape.
The present invention further provides a lid for use in a beverage receptacle assembly as described above comprising a reflective surface at least partially surrounding an aperture; and wherein, in use, a reflection of the decorative element is visible to a user of the lid in the reflective surface.
The decorative element may be a straw and the aperture may be adapted to receive the straw.
In another embodiment, the decorative element may be a representation of, for example, a cartoon character, vehicle or animal.
Preferably the reflective surface comprises a plurality of facets.
The reflective surface may encircle the aperture.
The reflective surface may comprise a mirrored surface.
The reflective surface may be formed from a metal, plastic, glass or metallised material.
The present invention further provides a lid assembly comprising a lid as described above in combination with a decorative element.
Preferably, the decorative element is a straw having a patterned or multi-coloured outer surface.
An embodiment of the present invention will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 shows an illustration of an embodiment of the beverage receptacle assembly of the present invention.
Figure 2 shows an exploded illustration of the beverage receptacle assembly shown in Figure 1.
Figures 1 and 2 show an embodiment of the beverage receptacle assembly. The assembly comprises a cup 10, a lid and a straw 30. The cup 10 is frusto conical with a closed end 11 and an open end 12. The closed end 11 forms the base of the cup 10. The base 11 is orthogonal to the axis of the cup 10 such that the base 11 is circular. The open end 12 of the cup 10 is not orthogonal to the axis of the cup but angled thereto at an angle of approximately 45 degrees such that an outer rim of the open end 12 of the cup is elliptical.
The lid 20 comprises an annular elliptical rim 21, reflective facets 22 and an aperture 23. The annular elliptical rim 21 cooperates with the annular open end 12 of the cup 10 to form a push-fit fixing means.
Each facet 22 comprises two long edges 221 and two short edges 222 and 223. Each of the two long edges 221 of each facet 22 is connected to the long edge 221 of an adjacent facet 22. The outer short edge 222 of each reflective facet 22 is longer in length than the inner short edge 223. The perimeter of the aperture 23 is defined by the combination of all the inner short edges 223 of each facet 22. Preferably the inner short edges 223 are curved to match the curvature of the straw 30.
As can be seen from the Figures, the facets 22 together form a reflective concave surface which descends from the annular elliptical rim 21 towards the aperture 23.
A multi-coloured straw 30 is received in the aperture 23 such that the lower end of the straw 30 is located inside the cup 10 and the upper end of the straw 30 protrudes above the aperture 23.
In use, the multi-coloured pattern of the straw 30 is reflected in the reflective facets 22 such that the reflection of the pattern of the straw 30 in one or more of the facets 22 is visible to the user.
Moreover, since the straw is rotatable, in use, the user may rotate the straw such that the reflected pattern of the straw 30 appears to rotate.
The invention may involve the open end 12 of the cup 10 being orthogonal to the axis of the cup 10 and therefore the open end 12 of the cup 10 being circular rather than elliptical. In this embodiment, the annular rim 21 of the lid 20 may be circular rather than elliptical in order to correspond with a round open end 12 of the cup 10.
The pattern on the straw 30 may not be permanent but may, instead, be influenced by physical conditions such as the temperature of the liquid into which the lower end of the straw 30 is placed.
The cross sectional shape of the cup 10 may be square, rectangular or any other shape.
The reflective concave structure of the lid 20 is not limited to comprising facets 22 and instead may be formed, for example, from an unfaceted surface.
The aperture 23 need not be situated at a centre of the concave reflective surface.
An alternative embodiment of the present invention does not include a fixing means for fixing the lid to the cup.
Instead, the lid is free to move with respect to the cup.
In another variation, the straw 30 may be connected or connectable to the lid 20.
