Vacuum tubes; low-pressure metallic-vapour apparatus.-An airtight joint for an operating rod k in a vacuum or gas-filled vessel a, such as a lamp, consists of a tube b secured to its vessel and provided with packing n, such as indiarubber; the rod may be used for varying the position of a body m or material relatively to an electrode for the purpose of regulating the pressure of the gas or vapour filling. The tube has a central wall c and an end wall c<1> through both of which the rod passes. A screwed plug J, tapped to receive the threaded part of the rod, closes one end of the tube, and bears against a loose metal washer o to effect compression of the packing n. The tube is secured to the vessel by a washer d, and a washer e bearing against a shoulder on the tube, packing rings f, g, i being interposed between the parts.
