Abstract

A holding device 2 for holding a dissolving bag 4 containing fishing bait 6. The holding device comprises a length of material 8 which is formed to define a receiving aperture 10 and a retaining slot 12, the receiving aperture and the retaining slot being in communication with each other forming a keyhole shape. The receiving aperture is capable of receiving there through a knotted end 14 of the dissolving bag, and the retaining slot is of a width for holding the dissolving bag with the knotted end extending from one side and the remainder of the dissolving bag extending from the opposite side. The holding device may be formed from a closed length of metal such as brass.

Description

A HOLDING DEVICE FOR HOLDING A
DISSOLVING BAG CONTAINING FISHING BAIT
This invention relates to a holding device and, more especially, this invention relates to a holding device for holding a dissolving bag containing fishing bait.
Many anglers produce their own fishing bait and put it in dissolving bags. The dissolving bags are usually formed of net material. The net material is purchased in the form of an open-ended tube. The net material is cut to a required length, knotted at one end to close the bag, and then filled with bait prior to being knotted at the other end. The bait may be in any form desired by the angler, for example as round balls, pellets or powder. The type of bait will also vary depending upon the preference of the angler. The dissolving bag is usually made of polyvinyl acetate.
The dissolving bag is cast to an area where the fishing bait is required.
During the casting, the bag may tear, for example due to being pulled upon by a fishing hook. If the bag tears, the fishing bait is lost.
It is an aim of the present invention to obviate or reduce the above mentioned problem.
Accordingly, in one non-limiting embodiment of the present invention there is provided a holding device for holding a dissolving bag containing fishing bait, which holding device comprises a length of material which is formed to define a receiving aperture and a retaining slot, the receiving aperture and the retaining slot being in communication with each other, the receiving aperture being of a size for receiving therethrough a knotted end of the dissolving bag, and the retaining slot being of a width for holding the dissolving bag with the knotted end extending from one face of the holding device and the remainder of the dissolving bag extending from the opposite face of the holding device, and the holding device being such that in use an angler puts the knotted end of the dissolving bag through the receiving aperture and then slides the knotted end of the dissolving bag along the retaining slot to the end of the retaining slot remote from the receiving aperture.
The holding device of the present invention is simple to use, and yet extremely effective. During casting the dissolving bag does not tend to tear, and this in turn enables the dissolving bag to be cast further out than might otherwise be the case.
Preferably, the length of material is a closed length of material. The length of material may however be interrupted if desired.
The receiving aperture is preferably a circular aperture. Other shapes of aperture may however be employed so that, for example, the aperture may be an octagonal shaped aperture. The receiving aperture should be big enough to receive the knotted end of the dissolving bag. The receiving aperture should not be overlarge because this simply represents a waste of material and makes the holding device larger than necessary. Thus preferably the receiving aperture is of a size that comfortably receives the knotted end of the dissolving bag and is not excessively larger than this.
The retaining slot may be of any suitable and desired length.
Preferably, the length of the retaining slot is longer than the diameter of the receiving aperture.
The material from which the holding device is made is preferably a metal. The metal is preferably brass or anodized brass. Other metals may be employed. Materials other than metal may be employed so that, for example, the material from which the holding device is made may be a plastics material. Depending upon the material employed, the holding device may be stamped, bent or moulded to shape.
The present invention also extends to the combination of the holding device and the dissolving bag containing the fishing bait.
Embodiments of the invention will now be described solely by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 shows a holding device holding a dissolving bag containing fishing bait; Figure 2 is a view like Figure 1 and shows how the dissolving bag is introduced to the holding device; and Figures 3 -6 show different ways of connecting the holding device and its dissolving bag to a fishing line and a fishing rod.
Referring to Figures 1 and 2, there is shown a holding device 2 for holding a dissolving bag 4 containing fishing bait 6. The holding device 2 comprises a length of material 8 which is formed to define a receiving aperture 10 and a retaining slot 12. The receiving aperture 10 and the retaining slot 12 are in communication with each other.
The receiving aperture 10 is of a size for receiving therethrough a knotted end 14 of the dissolving bag 4. The retaining slot 12 is of a width for holding the dissolving bag 4 with the knotted end 14 extending from one face of the holding device 2, and the remainder of the dissolving bag 4 extending from the opposite face of the holding device 2. As can be appreciated from Figure 2, the holding device 2 is such that in use an angler puts the knotted end 14 of the dissolving bag 2 through the receiving aperture 10, and then slides the knotted end 14 of the dissolving bag 2 along the retaining slot 12 to the end 16 of the retaining slot 12 remote from the receiving aperture 10.
The length of material 8 is a closed length of material. The receiving aperture 10 is a circular aperture. The length of the retaining slot 12 is longer than the diameter of the receiving aperture 10. The length of material 8 is preferably a length of a metal such for example as brass or anodized brass.
The holding device 2 is easy to operate. The knotted end 14 of the dissolving bag 4 is easily placed through the receiving aperture 10 and then slid along the length of the retaining slot 12. The holding device 2 is not of a complicated construction which advantageously enables the holding device 2 to be produced at a commercial price. The holding device 2 enables the dissolving bag 4 to be cast to long distances without the dissolving bag 2 tearing.
Figures 3 -6 show different ways of attaching the holding device 2 to other items of fishing equipment connected to a fishing line 18. In all cases, the fishing line 18 leads to a fishing rod (not shown). In Figure 3, the holding device 2 is connected to the bottom of a fishing float or weight 2. A hook line 22 extends via a swivel connector 24 between a connector 26 for the fishing line 18 and a hook 28 which is hooked into the dissolving bag 4. During casting, the hook 28 will not tear the dissolving bag 4.
Figure 4 shows an arrangement in which the hook line 22 is connected via a swivel connector 24 to a fishing float or weight 30. The hook 28 is connected to the dissolving bag 4, and it is connected via a hook line 32 to the holding device 2.
In Figure 5, there is shown an arrangement in which the hook 28 and the hook line 32 are utilised, but the hook line 22 shown in Figure 4 is dispensed with. Thus in Figure 5, the holding device 2 connects directly to the swivel connection 24.
Figure 6 shows an arrangement in which the holding device 2 connects directly to the swivel connector 24 as shown in Figure 5. The hook 28 extends from the dissolving bag 4, via a hook line 34, to a sliding connector 36 located above the fishing weight or float 30.
It is to be appreciated that the embodiments of the invention described above with reference to the accompanying drawings have been given by way of example only and that modifications may be effected. Thus, for example, the dissolving bag 4 is shown as a mesh bag but it may be made of a solid material if desired. The dissolving bag 4 is made of polyvinyl acetate but it may be made of other dissolving materials if desired. Any suitable and appropriate type of fishing bait 6 may be provided in the dissolving bag 4. ti
