Abstract

A method of providing a player verifiable lottery includes (a) providing lottery game parameters to potential players, (b) allowing potential players to review the terms of the lottery and the current jackpot 30, and place bets 31, (c) accepting bets, (d) allowing players to download software for checking the lottery result 32, (e) upon closing the lottery 33, allowing players to obtain data containing the final list of bets 34, (f) choosing a winning lottery number based upon an external event 36, e.g. a sports event or stock exchange values, and (g) checking the results and declaring a winner 37. The lottery is preferably internet based. A real-time current value of the jackpot may be displayed to players and potential players. The final list of bets may be made available before the winning number is chosen, may include the value of the jackpot, and/or may be available on an internet site or obtained by email. The lottery parameters provided to potential players may include the jackpot value, the value of a share taken by the lottery organiser, bets already placed, and the number of bets placed. The method is intended to prevent cheating by the lottery organiser.

Description

Game System and Method This invention relates to a verifiable lottery system and method.
Various lottery systems are known in the art, for example Toto, Lotto, which use the Pari-Mutuel method.
A problem with these systems is the danger of manipulating the results, for example by changing a bet after the winning result is declared. That is, the organizers of such a lottery, with the knowledge in hindsight of the actual results (the winning combination or number) can manipulate a bet placed by one of their friends or relatives, so it will win the game.
Furthermore, the organizers of the lottery may add a bet or several bets, after the lottery is presumably closed to bets.
The technical capability exists, so one may wonder whether it is abused.
Electronic theft is easy for a technical expert, and it is difficult to detect and prove in court -computer files can be easily manipulated, there are no fingerprints left, no locks to break, no alarm systems to bypass.
According to the present invention, there is provided a lottery system and method which is verifiable by the participants therein.
Partial information is presented in real time in the time period when bets are accepted. After the lottery is closed to bidding, but before the win decision, the betting file is available to participants. This prevents the organizers of the lottery from tampering with the bets, since the biddings can be verified by all the participants -this is an open and transparent system.
Furthermore, using the betting file and a suitable software, each participant can enter any hypothetical win result and view the winner, or winners, in that case -before the actual win decision.
After the actual win decision is made, participants can enter the actual win result and view the actual winner, or winners, without waiting for the winner's proclamation by the lottery organizers.
Participants can verify that the proclaimed winner exists in their bidding file, in which case this is indeed a legitimate bid.
Furthermore, each game is independent of other games by paying all the money collected -sums are not transferred to other games. This may help prevent tampering with the game by transferring funds to other games.
Preferably, the win decision is made at an external event, that is an event which is independent of the lottery system itself, to further protect against tampering with the win decision.
A preferred embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Fig. 1 illustrates a distributed/local lottery system Fig. 2 details a lottery method as implemented by the game organizers Fig. 3 details a lottery method as implemented by a participant in the game Fig. 1 illustrates a distributed/local lottery system. Each participant 15 may access the lottery 13 either through an Internet site 14 or locally through a Terminal 16, ie at a local store or lottery outlet.
The system uses a Pari-Mutuel lottery 13, wherein all the money collected for a game is paid to the winner or winners of that game, less a predefined percentage which is paid to the operator/organizer of the game.
For example, if no one has guessed all the six numbers, the winner is the guess of 5 numbers, or 4, etc. -in any case at least one winner is declared. If several participants guessed the same number of winning numbers, the prize is divided between them.
Since all the money collected in a game is paid in that game and no sums are transferred to other games, each game is independent of other games.
This may help prevent tampering with the game by transferring funds to other games. Rather, all the bets and all the payments for the present game are completely contained in the present game, and are laid open and subject to participants' scrutiny.
A Software for checking results 12 is available to users, for example it can be downloaded 141 from the site 14. The software 12 may be downloaded to participants 15 through link 141, whenever they ask for it.
The bettings file may be downloaded through link 142.
Email announcements or other information may also be downloaded 142 to the software 12, to be displayed to users.
Using the betting file and the software 12, each participant 15 can enter any hypothetical win result and see who is the winner, or winners, in that case -before the actual win decision, and what is the prize paid to each winner.
When the External event 11 occurs to declare the winning number or combination, the results may be transferred to the Pari-Mutuel lottery 13 and to the software for checking results 12. The actual results can then be displayed to the user 15. There is no need to wait for the winner's proclamation by the lottery organizers.
Lottery method as implemented by the game organizers The method includes, see Fig. 2: 1. Start lottery 21. The game parameters are set up and displayed to the public, for example in an Internet site and/or a lottery store.
2. Accept bets 22. Potential participants may review the terms of the game, bets placed by others and the present jackpot and may place bets. A participant can check if someone else has already placed a bet like his bet.
3. Allow to download a software for checking results to participants. 23 The software allows to read the betting file, to display the winner or winners for a hypothetical win outcome or for the real win numbers.
The software is downloaded only once.
The software provided to participants uses the same method as the lottery site for choosing the winner or winners, and for computing the prize.
Display jackpot -the jackpot is updated and displayed in real time.
The whole process is transparent and laid open to participants, since all the info is laid open, the data on bets placed and the method of dividing the prizes are identical in the site and at the participant's computers.
Therefore, each participwi. && v.Lf fr i2!f i-" n1 1-he winner or 1,, To close bidding? 21+ . According to the predefined parameters of the game.
If No, then goto (22) 5. Allow to download final bets list file to participants 25 It is important that the file can be downloaded before the win decision, to allow participants to check the bets placed prior to that event.
The list may include the value of the jackpot.
The bets list file may include the bet (guess) number and an identifying number to identify a participant or queue.
Participants may view the bets list on the web site or download it from the site or order a copy by email.
6. Win decision, external event 26. Various events may be used to decide the win number, for example local or international or overseas sports events, other/external lottery results, stock exchange values, etc. The external event is defined at the start of the lottery (21).
Preferably, the event 26 is unrelated to the lottery process, to prevent the lottery organizer from tampering with the event.
7. Check results and declare a winner 27 End of method.
Lottery method as implemented by a participant in the game)cT The method includes, see Fig. 3: 1. Access lottery 30. People can view the terms of the lottery, bets placed by others, the value of the jackpot and decide whether to place a bet.
2. Place bet(s) 31 3. Optional: Download software for checking results 32 4. Bidding closed? 33. If No, then goto 33 . Downlowi oIIIpiv, f.iil 1t f!!' 6. Check results for a possible winner 35 A participant can use hypothetical win results at this stage.
7. Win decision, external event 36 8. Check results to find the winner 37 Using bets list file and software 9. Is this (the winner according to stage 37) the declared winner (according to stage 27, see Fig. 2) ? 38 If yes then goto (391), else goto (392).
10. OK 391. The declared winner is in compliance with the bet file.
11. Protest 392. Apparently there may be a mistake or error in declaring the winner or in managing the lottery process.
End of method.
The parameters presented to potential participants in the game may include: 1. The jackpot 2. The share of the lottery organizer in the jackpot, for example a percentage or amount of money, etc. 3. The bets already placed (guesses of winning numbers) 1,* Number of bets placed Various embodiments of the present invention win. oecome ipptLeii.
