Abstract

A plug for a bath or sink that measures and displays the temperature of bath water comprising a heat transfer device 2 which transfers the heat of the bath water to a temperature measuring and displaying means that are enclosed in a water tight casing, the top of the casing is transparent to allow the display to be viewed. Preferably the heat transfer device 2 is made from a conductive material that passes through the transparent casing to the temperature measuring means. The temperature measuring means may be in the form of a digital thermometer that connects to a digital display 4, a bimetallic coil (16, fig 8) the expansion and contraction of which is visually represented by an arrow (fig 12) moving around a temperature display disk, or a capillary tube thermometer, where the expansion of fluid in a reservoir expands and runs along a capillary tube that runs over a visual display to display the temperature. The temperature displays may show the temperature in words, numbers or graphically to convey the temperature of the water. In addition the plug may incorporate flashing lights to warn the user that the water is too hot.

Description

TITLE
Bathwater temperature measuring device
DESCRIPTION
The invention relates to a bath plug thermometer intended to measure and show the temperature of bath water. The bath plug thermometer would help to avoid burns and scolds and would be especially useful for the carers of infants and the infirm.
The invention incorporates a beat transfer device which transfers the heat of the bath water surrounding it, in to a temperature measuring and displaying mechanism which is enclosed in a plug shaped watertight casing.
The combination of the heat transfer device with a temperature measuring and displaying mechanism enclosed in a plug shaped watertight casing, capable of acting as a plug which can effectively prevent the egress of water from a bath or a basin plug hole, together make up a viable bath plug thermometer.
There axe three embodiments of the bath plug thermometer detailed in this description but these three embodiments are not presented as an exhaustive list of the possible ways of displaying water temperature in a bath or a sink plug but are illustrative of the general principle described above.
In the first embodiment detailed of the bath plug thermometer, the temperature measuring and displaying mechanism is a digital thermometer, in the second embodiment the temperature measuring and displaying mechanism is a bimetallic coil and in the third embodiment the temperature measuring and displaying mechanism is a capillaiy tube thermometer.

A heat transfer device (2) made from a conductive material such as steel or brass, transfers the heat of the suxmunding bath water down its body and along its arms (3) and in toa heat sensor/s in the body of the digital thermometer enclosed the plug shaped housing (1). The digital thermometer is connected to one or more digital displays (4) set in to the top side of the plug shaped housing (1). When the digital thermometer is turned on, by depressing the on/off switch (5) located in the base of the plug shaped housing (1), the temperature of the heat transfer device (2) is shown on the digital display/s (4). When the digital thermometer is active and the plug is immersed in water, the temperature shown on the digital display/s (4) is the temperature of the water surrounding the exposed top portion of the heat transfer device (2).
The digital display/s (4) can indicate the suitability or otherwise of the bath water temperature in a number of possible ways. For example the digital display/s (4) can display a numerical temperature and/or a description of the temperature such as: "too cold", "tepid", "good temperature", "hot" and "too hot" and/or a graphic representation of the temperature such as displaying colours associated with heat ranges for example; blue could be used to indicate that the bath water is too cold, green could be used to indicate that the water is the correct temperature, while red may be used to indicate too ---"--.._....L.: _I_.___ ___.. l__.._.J _.._*.
nigH a tcuipciatwc, aaiusui uuzvt g1apLw. uvvic may uc ucu uiu a wizci.ui. iaw expressions relating to different temperatures, and so on. The digital display/s (4) may also include an emergency display such as a flashing red light to indicate a dangerously hot temperature.
The plug shaped hóüiiii([),1s enclófih a top casi (6)idëfrom plãti jij,ex or similar material, which has a transparent top (7) which enables the digital display/s (4) to be clearly seen.
The top casing (6) also has a hole (8) at its centre which allows the exposed top portion of the heat transfer device (2) to protrude through the outer casing (6) where a hole in the top of the heat transfer device (9) enables the bath plug thermometer to be attached to a bath plug chain in the usual fashion. In manufacture the outer edged of the hole (8) fits into the concave recess (10) of the heat transfer device (2), while a circular collar (11) extends underneath the hole. At the bottom of the plug shaped housing (1) is a flange (12) which aligns with the bottom edge of the top casing (6). In manufacture the top casing is sealed on to the circular collar (11) and the base flange (12), making a water tight connection between the opposing surfaces.
The plug shaped housing (I) has a battery chamber (13) on its base.
Embodiment two -mechanical bath nluQ thermometer: A heat transfer device (2), as referred to in embodiment one, is connected to a plug core base (14) made of a heat conductive material, the connection between the two members enables the heat of the bath water surrounding the exposed top section of the heat transfer device (2), to be communicated in to a bimetallic coil (16). The bimetallic coil (16) is attached to the heat transfer device (2) by the connection between horizontally protruding prongs (17) (partially shown) on the centre pin (18) (partially shown) in the centre of the bimetallic coil (16) which engage with corresponding holes in the column of the heat transfer device (28). The bimetallic coil (16) sits on the plug core base (14), and in this manner the heat of the bath water surrounding the exposed top portion of the heat transfer device (2) is communicated to the bi-metallic coil.
The outer end of the bimetallic coil has an outer pin (19) which extends above and bellow the height of the bimetallic coil (16), the bottom portion of the pin (1 9b) engages with a guide channel (20) in plug core base (14), the top portion of the pin (l9a) engages with a corresponding guide channel (21) in the visual display disk (22). The two guide channels align and together enable a limited movement to the outer pin (19) at the end of the bimetallic coil (16) between the ends of the guide channels (20) and (21).

For example the top side of the visual display disk (22) could be divided in to wedge shaped sections dividing up the space between (21a) and (21b) ranging between sections marked "too cold", "good temperature", and "too hot" these sections could also be colour coded for easy visual reference with the "too cold" area shown in a representative colour such as blue the "good temperature" might be in a green colour and the "too hot" area might be shown in a red colour -temperatures may also be marked in a numerical scale. Other visual/graphic representations of the temperature such as facial expressions may also be used.
An arrow/pointer (23) indicates the temperature of the water surrounding the exposed top portion of the heat transfer device (2) by coming to rest at a point along the arc between (21a) and (21b) the part of the visual display disk (22) at which the arrow head points indicates the measured temperature of the bath water surrounding the exposed top portion of the heat transfer device as conducted by the heat transfer device (2) and relayed by the bimetallic coil (16).
The visual display disk (22) has four locating tugs (24) on its bottom side, these lugs correspond to four equally spaced and shaped locating holes (25) in the plug core base (14) the connection between these members effectively anchor the visual display disk (22) in one place relative to the plug core base (14), enabling the top surface of the visual display disk (22) to be used as an effective area to mark out a temperature scale over which a temperature indicating arrow (23) can move, accurately indicating changes in temperature.
The temperature indicating arrow (23) has a hole/socket (26) at it outer pointed end which engages the top end of the pin (19a) while the inner end of the arrow (23) has a "u shaped" forked opening (27) which is designed to clip into a horizontal channel (not shown) which runs around the circumference of the heat transfer device column (29) just under the heat transfer device collar (11).
The temperature indicating arnw (23) has a step (30) which enables the inner portion of the temperature indicating arrow (23) to be underneath the underside of the heat transfer device collar (11) while the outer portion of the temperature indicating arrow (23) is in line with the top of the heat transfer device collar (Ii). This means that only the outer portion of the temperature indicating arrow (23) is visible through the transparent top casing (15).
Once the arrow (23) has been connected to the horizontal channel (not shown) in the heat Iransfer device column (29) the top end of the pin (19a) is then able to move in an arc between the outer ends of the guide channels (20) and (21), this movement being caused by an expansion or contraction of the bimetallic coil (16), which is caused by the bimetallic coil (16) heating up or cooling down, this heating or cooling being caused by the heat transfer between the heat transfer device (2) and the plug yore base (14) and ihc ambient water around the exposed top portion of the heat transfer device (2). In this manner the temperature of the bath water is conducted in to the bi-metallic coil (16) which is then visually represented by the arrow (23) moving around the visual display disk (p). _______ _____________________________ The internal workings of the bath plug thermometer are enclosed in a water tight connection between a transparent top casing (15) made from a material such as perspex and a bottom casing (31) which can be made from a variety of materials such as perspex, plastic or rubber.
The enclosing members can be joined together by glue or heat sealing or some other permanent water tight process.
Embodiment three -capillary thermometer A third embodiment of the bath plug thermometer is envisaged which uses a capillazy thermometer for displaying the temperature of bath water. In this embodiment the heat transfer device conducts the temperature of the water around its exposed top portion through the top casing in to a reservoir of a suitable heat reactive fluid contained in the plug core base, which is made of a suitable heat conducting material. The heat transferred in this manner causes the fluid in the reservoir to expand in to a capillary tube connected to the reservoir. This capillary tube is preferably circular in shape and the circle it describes is of a slightly reduced diameter to that of the visual display disk. The capillary tube runs over a visual display disk which clearly displays the temperature corresponding to the level of the fluid in the capillary tube. As with previous embodiments the temperature indicating element is enclosed in a water tight casing, the top side of which is transparent so that the temperature reading can be clearly seen from above.
