Abstract

A dielectric welding apparatus for welding sheet materials together to form a long seam includes an electrically-insulated conductive base plate 12, a rail 18 extending a parallel to the base plate so there is a space between them, and a carriage 25 movable along the rail. The carriage 25 comprises an electrode assembly 30 consisting of a welding electrode 36 and a return electrode 38 adjacent to it, whose lower surfaces are substantially coplanar, but the return electrode being of larger area, means 32 to move the electrode assembly 15 towards the base plate, and a radio-frequency output unit 28 having a live terminal connected to the welding electrode 36 and an earth terminal connected to the return electrode 38. By moving the carriage 25 stepwise along the rail and performing welding at each position, a long weld or seam can be formed.
