S
METHOD OF FOLDING A SHEET OF PACKING MATERIAL ABOUT A
TRIANGULAR-SECTION GROUP OF CIGARETTES
TECHNICAL FIELD
The present invention relates to a method of folding a sheet of packing material about a triangular-section grOup of cigarettes.
BACKGROUND ART
Triangular-SeCtion, rigid, hinged-lid packets of cigarettes, as described, for example, in Patent EP1240088B1, have been produced for some years now.
In a rigid, hinged-lid packet of cigarettes, the group of cigarettes is wrapped in a sheet of inner foil packing material to which no glue is applied; a sheet of rigid outer packing material is folded about the sheet of inner packing material to define a cup-shaped container having an open top end closed by a hinged lid; and, finally, an impermeable overwrapping, comprising a sheet of transparent plastic packing material, is fOlded about the sheet of outer packing material and heat sealed.
The sheet of inner foil packing material is always in the form of an elongated rectangle, and is first folded into a U about the group of cigarettes, either transversely or longitudinally, depending on the design of the cigarette packing machine. One example of folding a sheet of packing material about a group of cigarettes is described in Patent GB7 85076.
The sheet of foil inner packing material has a tear-off top portion bounded by a tear line, and which is torn off, when the packet of cigarettes is unsealed, for easy access to the cigarettes. The tear line defining the tear-off top portion is normally straight, and is formed by a rotary cutter on the packing machine.
If the sheet of inner packing material is folded longitudinally into a U about the group of cigarettes, the tear line defining the tear-off top portion may be complicated in shape and very difficult to form on the machine.
Moreover, in currently marketed triangular-section, rigid, hinged-lid packets of cigarettes, the tear-off top portion of the sheet of foil inner packing material is not always easy to remove.
DISCLOSURE OF THE INVENTION
It is an object of the present invention to provide a method of folding a sheet of packing material about a triangular-section group of cigarettes, designed to eliminate the aforementioned drawbacks.
According to the present invention, there is provided a method of folding a sheet of packing material about a triangular-section group of cigarettes, as claimed in the accompanying Claims.

PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS OF THE INVENTION
Number 1 in Figure 1 indicates as a whole a rigid, equilateral-triangular-section packet of cigarettes comprising a cup-shaped bottom container 2, and an inner package 3 (shown partly in Figure 3 and completely in Figure 4) housed inside container 2. Inner package 3 is defined by a prism-shaped group 4 of cigarettes with an equilateral triangular section, and by a sheet 5 of foil packing material (shown folded in Figure 4 and flat in Figure 6) completely enclosing group 4 of cigarettes. Container -.5- 2 has an open top end; and a cup-shaped lid 6 hinged to container 2 along a hinge 7 (Figure 2) to rotate, with respect to container 2, between an open position (Figure 3) and a closed position (Figures 1 and 2) *5 opening and closing the open top end respectively.
When lid 6 is in the closed position, container 2 is in the form of a triangular-section prism comprising a top wall 8 and a parallel opposite bottom wall 9; and three lateral walls.10. Three rounded longitudinal edges 11 are defined between lateral walls 10, and six square transverse edges 12 are defined between top and bottom walls 8, 9 and lateral walls 10.
Packet 1 also comprises a collar 13, which is folded about group 4 of cigarettes and on top of sheet 5 of foil packing material, and is connected (glued) to tbe inside of container 2 to project partly outwards of the open top end and engage a corresponding inner surface of lid 6 when lid 6 is in the closed position.
As shown in Figure 4, inner package 3 comprises a tear-off top portion 14 bounded by a tear line 15, and which, when inner package 3 is first opened, is torn off for easy access to group 4 of cigarettes (e.g. as shown in Figures 3 and 5).
As shown in Figure 6, sheet 5 of packing material is in the form of an elongated rectangle, and has two parallel opposite long sides, and two parallel opposite short sides.
As shown in Figure 7, group 4 of cigarettes is substantially in the form of a right triangular-section prism, and comprises three rectangular lateral' walls 16 (only two shown in Figure 7) defined by the cylindrical lateral walls of the cigarettes; and two parallel, opposite, triangular end walls 17 (only one shown in Figure 7) defined by the flat ends of the cigarettes. Three longitudinal edges 18 are defined between the three lateral walls 16, and six transverse edges 19 are defined between the three lateral walls 16 and the two end walls 17.
The way in which sheet 5 of packing material is folded about group 4 of cigarettes to form inner package 3 in Figure 4 will now be described with particular reference to Figures 7-10.
To begin with, as shown in Figure 7, a first end wall 17a of group 4 of cigarettes is brought into contact with the flat sheet 5 of packing material, so that a first lateral wall 16a of group 4 of cigarettes is perpendicular to the long sides o sheet 5 of packing material and parallel to the short sides of sheet 5 of packing material, and so that a second lateral wall 16b and a third lateral wall lQc of group 4 of cigarettes slope with respect to both the long sides and short sides of sheet 5 of packing material. The first end wall 17a of group 4 of cigarettes is preferably positioned symmetrically in the centre of sheet 5 of packing material with respect to both the long sides and short sides of * sheet 5 of packing material.
Next, as shown in Figure 8, a first portion of sheet 5 of packing material is folded onto. first lateral wall 16a.
At this point, as shown in Figure 9, the ends of the first portion of sheet 5 of packing material projecting from first lateral wall 16a are folded onto second lateral wall 16b and third lateral wall 16c. As shown in Figure 9, a second portion, opposite the first portion, of sheet 5 of packing material is then folded onto second lateral wall 16b and third lateral wall 16c, and partly onto the previously folded first portion of. sheet 5 of packing material to form a tubular package with one open end at.a second end wall 17b.
Finally, as shown in Figure 10, sheet 5 of packing material is folded onto second end wala 17b to complete folding of sheet 5 of packing material about group 4 of cigarettes and form inner package 3.
More specifically, folding sheet 5 of packing material onto second end wall 17b comprises folding sheet 5 of packing material successively about the three transverse edges 19 of second end wall 17b.
As shown in Figures 1-10, sheet 5 of packing material has two tear lines 15, each of which is parallel and close to a respective short side. of sheet 5 of packing material, and defines tear-off top portion 14, which therefore covers the whole top end of inner package 3, as shown clearly in Figures 3, 4 and 5. In a different embodiment, not shown, the two tear lines 15 are located at different distances from the respective short sides of sheet 5 of packing material. In a further embodiment not shown, sheet 5 of packing material has two tear lines 15, each of which is parallel and close to a respective short side of sheet 5 of packing material, is shorter than the respective short side of sheet 5 of packing * material, and defines tear-off top portion 14.
In a further embodiment shown in Figures 12 and * 14, sheet 5 of packing material has one tear line 15 parallel and close to a short side of sheet 5 of packing material, and defining tear-off top portion 14, which therefore only covers a front portion of the top end of inner package 3.
Figure 11 (corresponding to Figures 12 and 10) and Figure 13 (corresponding to Figure 14) show two ways of folding sheet 5 of packing material onto second end wall l7b to conp1ete folding of sheet 5 of packing material about group 4 of cigarettes and form inner package 3. The two ways, shown in Figures 11 * 25 and 13, of folding sheet 5 of packing material onto second end wall 17b differ. as to the order in which sheet 5 of packing material is folded successively about the three transverse edges 19 of second end wall 17b. More specifically, in the Figure 11 embodiment, sheet 5 of packing material is folded first about the rear transverse edge 19 (i.e. parallel to hinge 7 of lid 6), and, in the Figure 13 embodiment, sheet 5 of packing material is folded last about the rear transverse edge 19 (i.e. parallel to hinge 7 of lid 6).
The methQd described above of folding sheet 5 of packing material about group 4 of cigarettes has several advantages, by being cheap and easy to* implement on a packing machine and, above all, by employing exclusively straight tear lines 15.
Moreover, using the above method of folding sheet 5 of packing material about group 4 of cigarettes, the tear-off top portion 14 is easy to remove.
