Abstract

A reclining device comprises a base plate 10, a gear plate 20 having inner teeth 21 and being rotatably assembled with the base plate, two pairs of fixed guides 30 formed on the base plate, and a pair of lock gears 40 each having outer teeth 41 capable of being engaged with the inner teeth of the gear plate, each of the lock gears being disposed between a respective pair of fixed guides so as to slide along one of the fixed guides. A cam 50, biased by a pair of springs 60 and drivable by a shaft 70, controls movement of the lock gears to engage them with the gear plate. The mechanical strength of the fixed guides is set to be lower than that of the gear plate and the lock gears, such that when a large load is applied to the reclining device, the lock gears push the fixed guides to deform them and cause outer end portions 31 to contact the inner teeth of the gear plate to prohibit inclination movement of the seat back.
