Abstract
The holder comprises a disk retaining portion 8 for releasably retaining a disk, such as a CD or DVD through its middle hole. The retaining portion extends from a base of slightly larger diameter on which the inner surface of the disk is supported. The side of the base opposite to that supporting the disk is provided with an adhesive, such as a double-sided adhesive tape, or an adhesive pad, which serves to attach the holder to any convenient supporting surface. The base may have a void or recess 7 defining a peripheral skirt. The recessed area enables the entire adhesive pad to be concealed from view when attached to a surface.
Description
THE "NEWO" IS A DIVICE ENABLING VERTICAL STORAGE AND DISPLAY OF SINGLE COMPACT DISKS.
Features of the invention: Protects Compact Discs that have not been stored in the original case, and stores them quickly and away from any potential damage.
* Allows CD's to be displayed showing the Artwork printed on a CD, and still protecting it from contacting any harmful surface.
* Allows CD's to be transported without the need of the CD's case.
* A CD not stored in its box will collect dust, by then placing that CD into a CD drive the dust is transported into the appliance. By positioning CD's in a horizontal position with the NEWO CD holder, in a vertical position, prevents dust from seWing on either side of the CD, therefore not transporting dust into an appliance.
* Using the NEWO is next best way to protecting a CD from getting scratched protecting the CD from rubbing against a hard damaging surface.
* The NEWO is also versatile, and can be used in almost any area a CD may be needed.
e.g.:-Office Brochure Car Home Retail In summary the NEWO is the item of stationary designed to be used to hold CD's, out of a box, by securing the CD in a way that prevents the CD from being damaged.
Background of the Invention
The Idea for the invention came from a problem I encountered when preparing to hand in a university project. When submitting written assessments, a CD containing the information of the report needed to be attached to the document. Typically the document is spiral bound with a translucent front cover and a hard piece of card at the back. When handing in the assessment I had to attach a CD somehow, and ended up putting the CD into an envelope then attaching the envelope with double sided tape to the back of the report.
From this point I searched stationary shops to see if such a product existed that enabled a CD to be fixed to a document, I found nothing.
Thinking more about the product, I began to develop more ideas of what else it could be used for. As well as using the Newo for reports, I also thought it could be used:- * In the house the Newo could be used as a practical or decorative item of stationary used for displaying a CD to enable it to be seen out of its box.
* In the Car I only have a single CD player and I rarely put the CD back in the box once I have finished with it. The Newo could be attached to a surface within the car allowing the driver to easily reach a CD.
* The Newo could also be used in the office to attach important CD's to Computers such as the Tower unit or on the Monitor. This could be an important CD that needs to be within easy reach regularly, such as a back up disk.
* Product information on CDs usually accompanies litterateur of some kind e.g. a sales brochure. The Newo can combine the two by attaching the CD to the product brochure, instead of having a separate CD in its traditional box.
The Problem it solves This device provides a new way of displaying and storing compact disks, with the ability to store a CD almost anywhere. The product is a small plastic disk with double sided sticky foam approximately 1mm thick attached to the back of the circular plastic disk. One side of the foam is permanently attached to the NEWO; the other side can be stuck to the desired surface. The top of the device allows a CD to be attached in a similar way that a CD is held in a case, this can then be stuck almost anywhere.
When issuing a report at work I would bum photographs1 documents etc onto a black CD and postthe CD in its boxwiththe report the Newo reduces the amount of packaging a CD needs, e.g. making it cheaper and easier to attach a CD to a document, rather than posting a boxed CD with the document Overall the document package would look more professional having the CD attached to the hard back or front cover of an A4 report file, ensuring all information stays together.
In the house the Newo could be used as a practical or decorative item to hold a CD. Often CDs used by children end up placed on the floor and not put back into the original box.
When a CD is removed from a machine it can be attached quickly and safely to a wall or other surface where the Newo is placed.
Sales brochures from manufactures usually come with a CD containing information about the product When information is supplied in this way the CD is usually separate to the product file and comes in a transparent plastic envelope. It is often the case then when the CD has been used that it and the product brochure are not kept together. By using the NEWO attached to the brochure, ensures that the CD is stored back in the brochure keeping all information together.
In a retail environment the Newo would solve how a retailer might think about how to display their CDs. The Newo would enable the CDs to be visually aocesslble when placed in a prominent position e.g. on a shops window.
What the invention does The NEWO allows Compact Discs to be Stored and Transported in a way that excludes the need for external packaging, reducing the cost of packaging. By attaching the NEWO to a surface means a CD can be held through its central hole in a face down position, therefore protecting its most vulnerable side. It reduces the amount of packaging needed to transport CD's through product sates brochures, eliminating the need for a traditional CD box. It also serves an aid to quickly store CD's in a safe area of a persons choosing.
S
Key Features * Eliminates the need for a CD to be stored in a traditional box.
* Allows quick and easy access to a CD.
* Allows a CD to be displayed, showing artwork on the disc itself.
* The NEWO can be used in both a decorative or functional way * Depending on the type of adhesive foam pad and its tackiness could make the product reusable.
* The NEWO is not limited to one SPeCIfIC area or location of use.
* The thickness of the NEWO is so thin it would not affect any brochures it was used in.
* The idea of the product itself means that it can work in Commercial Domestic or Public places.
* A corporate logo or colour could be designed into the manufacturing of the product.
* Depending on the adhesiveness of the foam pad, could mean that the NEWO could be attached to almost any type of surface with damaging it.
* Depending on the type of plastic used means the NEWO could be recycled.
Written description of drawings:
Referencing pages 1-7 (Figs 1-13) 1. 1:1 Plan view of the Newo shows the approximate size of the Newo being 34mm. The size of the Newo has been designed in connection to a compact disc's appearance. The hole in its middle has a transparent area around it that is approximately 34mm. The size of the Newo will visually fill this area. The materiality of the Newo was developed in mind of using plastic injection moulding to produce it.
2. The overall height of the Newo is approximately 4mm, keeping the CD 2mm from the surface the Newo is attached to. The raised top of the Newo will have a designed, uhold and release" mechanism. This will enable the CD to be attached and released to the Newo with ease.
3. The underside of the Newo will be recessed to enable an adhesive SO" shaped piece of 1mm sticky foam to be attached. By recessing the adhesive foam within the Newo gives a better aesthetics and prevents dust from sticking to the double sided 1mm foam. The exposed area of the foam i.e., not stuck to the Newo, will have a small piece of protective paper that will be removed when the Newo is needed to be attached to a surface.
4. The 3D view at 1:1 scale shows the Newo's top is designed to be smaller that its base. The 4 notches at the top are what hold and release the CD, with minimal force applied to the centre of the Newo the CD is easily released. Attaching a CD is achieved by pushing the CD onto the Newo.
5. The dotted line indicates a typical sized CD and how that CD fits onto the Newo.
6. The only area of the product that will be above the attached CD will be 4 notches and the raised centre of the Newo going through the centre of the CD. This raised surface of the Newo could contain a company name or a small logo, see Fig 13.
7. Section B-B shows a cut through of the Newo and how the double sided adhesive foam pad works in relation to the plastic body of the Newo. One side of the 1mm foam pad is attached permanently to the plastic body, the other side is attached as a when required by removal of a piece of paper.
8. The top of the Newo stands 1mm above the attached CD. This section shows how a CD is held by the notches that are formed as part of the main body of the Newo.
9. The 3D view shows the relationship between the Newo and the CD showing exactly how much of the Newo is below the CD, and how much is above. The upper exposed part of the Newo is where a company logo or name could be formed in the body of the Newo through the plastic molding process, see Fig 13.
1O.The rendered images top view (Fig 7) shows the transparent window around the perimeter of the hole in the middle of the CD, and the Newo below. The color of the Newo can also be specified to any color of plastic available.
11.The rendered bottom view shows the CD, face down held in position by the Newo.
12. The rendered images bottom view shows the recessed area where the adhesive pad will be located. The recessed area enables the entire adhesive pad to be concealed from view when attached to a surface.
13. Fig 9. Shows the CD in plan, in context to the Newo. As part of the structure the Newo incorporates a hold and release mechanism that can still be seen when a CD is attached.
14.The way a CD is manufactured means that there is a transparent window around the perimeter of the hole in the centre of the CD. The size of the Newo would be large enough to cover this window, allowing the color of the Newo to be seen through the CD.
15. Depending on the adhesiveness would depend on the surface that the Newo could be attached to. E.g. the less tacky the sticky foam is, the easier it would be to attach the Newo to glass, and remove it. The less tacky the foam, the less mess is left when the Newo us removed.
16. The Newo will project a minimal distance above the stored CD, approximately 1mm. The Newo can be stored at any angle without the risk of the CD falling from the Newo.
17. This indicates the 2mm of the Newo below the stored CD; the 2mm encompasses the adhesive foam pad.
18.30 View, not to scale shows the Newo, comprising of the holding and releasing mechanism.
19. The recessed area for housing the 1mm double sided foam disc.
20. The double sided foam disc to be attached to the underside of the Newo's plastic body.
21.Demonstrating that a company logo or name could be molded into the Newo at production stage.
22. Indicates the notches that would hold a CD in place once the CD is attached onto the central part of the Newo.
23. The dotted line indicates the recesses area below and the thickness of the wall surrounding the foam disc.
