Abstract

A process for making a material comprises applying, e.g. by glueing, pieces (2) of a material component, e.g. discarded paper, to a substrate (3) and sewing them thereto. The manufactured material can be used for making many different objects such as bags, belts, and other decorative articles.

Description

RECYCLED MATERIAL
The invention relates to a material and a process for its manufacture, which material can be used for making many different objects such as bags, belts, and jewellery for example, and other decorative articles.
The present invention provides a process for making a material comprising applying pieces of a material component to a substrate and sewing the pieces of the material component to the substrate. Correspondingly, the present invention provides a material comprising a substrate having pieces of a material component sewn thereto manufactured according to the process of the present invention.
The invention advantageously results in a useful and aesthetically pleasing material. The stitching gives strength to the material and results in attractive stitch lines. As a further advantage of the present invention, discarded materials such as magazines and newspapers can be used for the material components and the substrate, whereby the material is a recycled product.
Other advantageous subsidiary features of the invention are set out in the sub-claims.
Embodiments of the present invention will now be described by way of example only with reference to the accompanying drawings in which Fig. 1 is a schematic perspective view of a sample of paper for use in an embodiment of the invention; Fig. 2 is a schematic perspective view of a partially assembled material according to an embodiment of the invention; Fig. 3 is a schematic perspective view of the material after further processing; Fig. 4 is a schematic perspective view showing an underside of the material according to Fig. 3; Fig. 5 is a schematic perspective view showing the material after trimming of its edges; and Fig. 6 is a schematic perspective view showing a backing being applied to the material.
Referring to Fig. I, there is shown an example of a piece of paper I that can be used in the present invention. Any discarded paper, plastic or fabric can be used, as the substrate and/or the material component. For example, paper may include magazines, newspapers, periodicals, journals, books, wrapping paper, maps, and/or goods or food packaging etc. Plastics can include carrier bags, and/or goods or food packaging etc. Fabrics can comprise second-hand clothing, furnishings, and/or linen and so on.
Fig. 2 shows an example of the material during assembly. Pieces of a material component 2 are arranged on a substrate 3. In this example, the substrate is a blank sheet of paper or card and the pieces of material component 2 comprise a series of overlapping strips torn from a discarded magazine, with each strip overlapping the strip which has previously been laid down. The strips 2 are generally aligned with one another. As well as strips, block-shaped pieces of material component can be used, as can various other shapes. An adhesive can be provided on the surface of the substrate while the strips 2 are applied thereto. This ensures that the strips 2 remain in place for the subsequent sewing operation. Alternatively, each strip 2 may be glued individually to the substrate 3. It would also be possible to dispense with the adhesive altogether.
Fig. 3 shows the material following the sewing operation, which can be carried out using a standard sewing machine. Threads 4 fonn a stitching pattern on the surface of the material and the loose thread ends protrude from the end edges of the material to be removed in a subsequent trimming operation. In the example shown, the sewing is carned out along a series of roughly equidistant, parallel lines, running along the length of the material at right angles to the orientation of the strips. It is possible to sew using horizontal, vertical, or diagonal lines; or using randomly orientated lines; or by using a pattern such as a flower, sky scraper or butterfly for example; or by using a combination of any of the aforementioned sewing configurations.
Fig. 4 shows the underside of the material following the sewing operation. The stitching pattern is also visible on this side of the material.
Fig. 5 shows the surface of the material following the trimming operation. The loose thread ends 4 have been removed from the ends of the material and the side edges of the material also have been tidied. A varnish, paint or any other kind of protective coating can be applied at this stage, or could be applied before trimming if desired.
The coating is optional.
Fig. 6 shows an optional backing S being applied to the reverse side of the material.
The backing 5 can be applied by rolling it onto the material from a roll 6.
Alternatively, the backing may be in the form of a flat sheet which is simply applied onto the back of the substrate. Adhesive can be used to stick the backing to the material, or again, it can be sewn onto the material. The backing can comprise a discarded material.
