Abstract
A modular tube fly system for the construction of artificial flies of the type used by anglers in the pursuit of predatory fish. The system allows an angler or fly tier to employ a tube fly of a preferred pattern and alter its weight, colour, and style by adding or removing various components. The components may be joined or un-joined by means of threaded, push-fit or other interlocking joints. The tubes allow the fishing line to be passed through the length of the body and a suitable hook secured at the end of the fly. The tube system may also include a component to hold the fly for the purpose of dressing or tying.

Tube fly system The invention relates to a modular tube fly system for the construction of flies of the type employed by anglers in the pursuit of predatory fish such as Salmon, Trout, Bass, Bonefish, Tarpon, Pike, Shark, Tuna, Perch and other species in both fresh and salt water.
Such Tube flies are well known but suffer from the disadvantage that once lied they are of a fixed length, material, weight, colour and style and do not allow the adding or subtracting of components to alter the weight, (and thereby the depth at which the fly fishes) colour, or style of the fly. Thereby requiring the angler to have numerous different flies to cover different water I fishing conditions and situations.
The object of this invention is to provide a tube fly system that allows the angler / fly tier to employ a fly of a preferred pattern and alter its weight (and thereby the depth at which it fishes) its length, head design / colour and body design I colour, through the use of interchangeable components. Thereby being able to alter a tube fly's characteristic to meet different situations and conditions when fishing.
Accordingly this invention includes a series of tubular components manufactured from a variety of materials that can be joined and un-joined by means of threaded joints, push fit joints or other inter-locking joints. The tubes allow the fishing line to be passed through their length and a suitable hook to be secured to the rear of the fly.
A preferred embodiment of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: FIGURE 1 -shows longitudinal sections, rear and side elevations of various body and tail components.
FIGURE 2-shows longitudinal sections, front and side elevations of various head/cap components.
FIGURE 3-shows methods of joining and securing the components together.
FIGURE 4-shows elevations of typical combinations of the components.
FIGURE 5-shows a component for holding one of the tube fly bodies in a fly vice for the purposes of dressing / tying the fly.
As Figure 1 shows the tube fly system comprises a number of tubular components that form a standard body (la) a tail (Ib) and various body extensions (ic, id & le). Figure 2 shows various caps / head designs such as a flat cap (2a) a bullet head (2b) a splayed head (2c) and a wake head (2d). All of these may be made of various materials including metals, plastics or composites. The ability to provide different coloured finishes and surfaces to the matenals may also be incorporated. Other body, head and tail components of different styles and designs may be added to the system to extend its versatility Components may be joined together and secured to each other by means of threaded joints as Figure 3a or push fit joints incorporating a seal / locking device as in Figure 3b. Other jointing systems maybe utilised that allow the components to be joined and taken apart without the need for tools.
Numerous combinations of the tube fly components are possible as indicated by the examples shown in Figures 4a, 4b, 4c, 4d and 4e.
The system incorporates a component to hold the body of the fly for the purposes of dressing I tying the fly as shown in Figure 5. This can be used in any standard fly vice having jaws thus alleviating the need for special tools
Claims (8)
- TheClaimsPagel of I Claim 1. A tube-fly system comprising of a varietyof components of various materials and finishes that may be joined together or taken apart my means of threaded, push-fit or other mechanical joints.
- Claim 2. A tube-fly system that enables the weight of the fly to be altered before, during or after it has been tied I constructed by means of adding or subtracting various components that may be of different materials and/or finishes.
- Claim 3. A tube-fly system that enables the length of the fly to be altered before, during or after it has been tied I constructed by means of adding or subtracting va ous components that may be of different materials and/or finishes.
- Claim 4. A tube-fly system that enables the head type and colour to be altered either before or alter it has been tied / constructed by means of adding or subtracting components that may be of different materials and/or finishes.
- Claim 5. A tube-fly system that enables the body type and colour to be altered either before or after it has been tied I constructed by means of adding or subtracting components that may be of different materials and/or finishes.
- Claim 6. A tube-fly system that enables the tail type and colour to be altered either before or after it has been tied / constructed by means of adding or subtracting components that may be of different materials and/or finishes.
- Claim 7. A tube-fly system that enables different body materials to be combined in a single fly either before or after it has been tied / constructed and so alter its behaviour when fished by means of adding or subtracting components that may be of different materials and/or finishes.
- Claim 8. A tube-fly system that incorporates a component to hold the body of the fly for the purposes of dressing I tying the fly that can be used in any standard fly vice having jaws, thus alleviating the need for spedal tools and I or special vice heads.
