Abstract
A monitor and transmitter 5 which links to existing energy use meters and vehicle odometers, 1,2,3,4 such that the energy use is monitored and transmitted to the users registered device 6 such as a mobile phone when it is in range of and recognised by the monitor and transmitter 5. The user activates their own device 6 to transfer the data to a central computer 7 which recognises the sender, the data type and the monitor /transmitter 5 allowing the calculation of a current carbon footprint. This footprint data is transmitted back to the users preferred destination device. The central computer 7 is so programmed to remind the user to take their device 6 within range of the monitor and transmitter 5 if no data has been received with a pre-determined period.

Description
The present invention relates to the collection of energy use data from existing metering devices within properties, businesses and vehicles and its transmission to a central computer using the users mobile phone or similar device thus allowing the users current carbon footprint to be calculated and presented to the user on the users mobile phone and other devices.
There is a growing recognition that individuals, families and organisations should establish their own Carbon Footprint ( the weight of green house gases emitted by them as measured as an amount of carbon dioxide equivalent (Co2e)) and take steps to reduce this over time.
All methods of establishing a carbon footprint require an understanding of the energy used in an individual's or organisation's various activities and converting this to Co2e in Tonnes or Kilograms per annum. The existing methods available to gather this information rely either on manual input of energy use or meter replacement and or wired or wireless links back to the energy provider's central computer system. At best this provides either an unverifiable Carbon Footprint and or a Carbon Footprint limited to one or two energy use types.
Developments in existing meter reading and energy use calculation allow the energy use data to be collected without replacing the existing meter. However, the transmission of that data back to central computers currently relies on wired or wireless connections with a data collector which itself is connected to a central computer by wire or which incorporates its own mobile phone network SIM card.
Setting up this data transport infrastructure is expensive, time consuming and can be cumbersome. This puts remote data collection and hence remote verifiable Carbon Footprint calculation beyond the reach of many individuals and smaller business organisations.
The present invention can be linked to existing energy use meters, recorders and vehicle odometers using their existing data output capability be that a connection port infrared or wireless. Where the existing energy use meter does not have a data export capability the present invention can be linked to an optical meter reader. The present invention, which may be a stand alone unit or incorporated into meters or meter reading devices, records and transmits the energy use data making it available to passing' but authorised Bluetoothm or similar devices. The term Bluetoothm refers to a technology specification by Bluetooth special interest group (SIG) for small factor, low-cost, short range radio links (SRRL) between various devices provided with BluetoothTM wireless modules.
Figure 1 shows schematically a Carbon Footprint Monitor and Transmitter (CFM) entity 5. The CFM is linked by wire or wirelessly to the existing energy use meter, recorder or odometer, depending on the type of meter 1, 2,3,4. This link may be one CFM to each meter or one CFM to several meters depending on the existing energy use meter(s) type and location.
The CFM stores at regular but variable intervals the energy consumption as recorded by each energy use meter, recorder or odometer, 1,2,3,4. This information is made available to a passing' mobile phone or similar device, 6,which is Bluetoothm enabled and recognised by the CFM, 5.
When device 6 passes' the CFM within the BluetoothTM range the energy use data is transmitted to device 6 with a simple text instruction asking the recipient to press send' or transmit the data to the central computer 7. The instruction is pre-coded such that central computer 7 will receive the data in the correct format and identify the device from which it was transmitted 6, the energy use meter 1, 2,3, 4 and the type of energy use to allow the appropriate conversion to an updated Carbon Footprint.
The device or devices(s), 6, which are to be used to forward the energy use data to the central computer,7, are pre-registered by the user such that the CFM transmits data only to authorised and registered devices.
The central computer uses the received data to calculate the users current carbon footprint, compare this to established target emissions and return the footprint to the user on the users preferred device which may include but not be limited to device 6.
The central computer,7, has a reverse link utilising such means but not limited to text or Short Message Service (SMS) and e-mail through which it can remind the user that if they have not passed' the energy use meter 1,2,3 or,4 within a certain defined but variable period and hence no energy use data has been received by the central computer,7, that they should do so with their registered Bluetoothm or similar enabled device such that data can be received and the carbon footprint calculated and updated. * . 3

- 3. A method as claimed in claim 2 wherein the recognition is accomplished at the transmitter.
- 4. A method as claimed in any preceding claim to allow the energy use data to be recognised as emanating from a particular transmitter and of a particular type in order to allow the calculation of a carbon footprint.
- 5. A method as claimed in any preceding claim which allows the user to install and activate the transmitting device such that the user may receive ongoing and regularly updated carbon footprint data.
- 6. A method as claimed in any preceding claim which allows the user to receive ongoing and regularly updated carbon footprint data in various ways including but not limited to the users mobile phone, lap-top or personal computer by text or Short message service and or e-mail.
- 7. A method as claimed in any preceding claim whereby the energy use and carbon footprint data so recorded is classed as verified.
