Valves, arrangement of; suction reservoirs. - A can 1 containing oil or other liquid which is discharged by a pump is provided with a solid piston valve 23 movable freely in a cylinder 16 secured in the pump barrel 14. A port 19 in the cylinder communicates with the spout 10 through a port 15 in the barrel and a tube 34. The lower end of the cylinder has an inturned flange 17 forming a seat for the valve, and grooves 18 formed in the inner surface of the cylinder estend to the top of the cylinder but terminate above the lower end. The pump plunger is pressed upwards by a spring 23, the end of the bottom coil being bent inwards to limit the movement of the valve 23. When the plunger is depressed, the valve moves downwards, closing the lower end of the cylinder 16, and liquid in the barrel is ejected through the port 19 to the spout. On the upward stroke of the plunger, the valve is drawn upwards by suction, closing the port 19, and liquid is drawn into the barrel from the can through the grooves 18. A slotted disc valve 7 in the spout prevents leakage of liquid when the pump is inoperative, and a strainer 5 is fitted around a filling opening 4. The can is provided with a looped wire or hook 12 for suspending it from a support. Thei pump plunger comprises a pair of cupped, flexible and oppositely-disposed members 26, 28 mounted between nuts 25, 27 on a stem 33, the margins of these members being pressed against the barrel by hollow conical members 29, 30 loosely mounted on the stem between them and pressed apart. by a spring 31.
