Abstract

A system for piercing liquid/fluid containers includes a hinge, D, which is formed on the container A. Hinge D is connected to/part of flap E. Flap E can be manipulated so as to allow piercing tip C to perforate material B, such as foil. The flap may have a recess to accommodate a thumb or finger of a user.

<p>Background</p>
<p>This invention relates to a piercing system for liquid/fluid containers with external surface(s) that are able to be pierced.</p>
<p>Liquid/fluid containers are difficult to open. They are a particular problem when used by an individual with limited manipulative ability, due to a stroke or paralysis, or those who have had one arm amputated. An additional problem with liquid/fluid containers is that when they are opened at altitude, in an aircraft for example, the difference in pressure can cause the contents to exit the container at speed resulting in the user being on the receiving end of the contents of the container.</p>
<p>Statement of Invention</p>
<p>To overcome these difficulties, the present invention proposes a piercing hinged flap system.</p>
<p>Advantages With a piercing hinged flap system, the need to peel the foil, plastic or paper from a liquid/fluid container is eliminated, allowing one-handed opening.</p>
<p>With a piercing hinged flap system, the user is protected from general spillage, and in particular, from contents exiting rapidly during pressure change e.g. when the liquid/fluid container is opened in an aircraft at altitude.</p>
<p>Preferably, the hinged flap has a semi-circular recess to accommodate a finger or thumb.</p>

<p>An example of the invention will now be described by referring to the accompanying drawings.</p>
<p>Figure IA and I B show a milk pot, A, with foil B and; Figure 2A and 2B show a milk pot, A, with material B, piercing tip C, Hinge D and flap E.</p>
<p>Detailed Description</p>
<p>A hinge, D, is created onlin the container material to allow flap E to be manipulated, allowing piercing tip C to perforate foil B. Hinge D may be created by the adhesion of further materials between flap E and container A. Alternatively, Hinge D may be created by pinching the container material along the dotted line of Hinge D shown in figure 2A. Hinge D may be so made as to remain intact when piercing tip C perforates foil B, thus preventing the user from spillage/rapidly exiting contents. Piercing tip C may be curved so as to mirror the internal arc of the container A.</p>

  1. <p>Claims 1. A system for piercing liquid/fluid containers comprising a
    hinged flap with piercing tip.</p>
    <p>2. A system for piercing liquid/fluid containers according to claim 1, in which the hinging material can be the same as that of the container material.</p>
    <p>3. A system for piercing liquid/fluid containers according to claim 2, in which the hinge material can be different to the container material.</p>
    <p>4. A system for piercing liquid/fluid containers according to claim 1, in which the hinging position of the flap can be varied to permit optimum usability.</p>
    <p>5. A system for piercing liquid/fluid containers according to claim 1, in which the flap can vary in size and shape.</p>
    <p>6. A system for piercing liquid/fluid containers according to claim 1, in which the flap material can be the same as that of the container material.</p>
    <p>7. A system for piercing liquid/fluid containers according to claim 1, in which the flap material can be different to the container material.</p>
    <p>8. A system for piercing liquid/fluid containers according to claim 5, in which the flap can have a recess to accommodate a thumb or finger.</p>
    <p>9. A system for piercing liquid/fluid containers according to claim 1, in which the piercing tip can vary in size and shape.</p>
    <p>10. A system for piercing liquid/fluid containers according to claim 1, in which the piercing tip material can be the same as that of the container material.</p>
    <p>11. A system for piercing liquid/fluid containers according to claim 1, in WhiCh the piercing tip material can be different to the container material.</p>
    <p>12. A system for piercing liquid/fluid containers according to claim 1, in which the piercing tip position on the flap can be varied to permit optimum functionality.</p>
    <p>13. A system for piercing liquid/fluid containers according to claim 1, in which the hinged flap position on the container can be varied to permit optimum usability.</p>
