Description

2339211 IMPROVEMENTS IN OR RELATING TO CONTAINERS This invention relates
to containers and more particularly is concerned with containers for accommodating compositions for disinfecting or otherwise treating the water in the toilet bowl of a water closet.
It is known to provide compositions containing constituents such as antimicrobial agents, perfumes, bleaching agents, colourants, and/or foaming agents for use in treating the water in toilet bowls. Ordinarily, the compositions are in the form of coherent self supporting blocks in cage-like containers suspended near the rim of the toilet bowl in a position where, on each occasion the toilet bowl is flushed, the flushing water enters the container and contacts the block to entrain some of the composition before flowing into the lower part of the bowl. Thus the water-remaining in the bowl, after the flushing, includes some of the composition which disinfects or otherwise treats the water and the adjacent surfaces of the bowl.
More recently, compositions in the form of liquids or gels have been proposed. These have a relatively high viscosity such that they are retained in the___.
container. During flushing, water enters the container and dilutes a part of the liquid or gel to form a relatively low viscosity composition which is able to egress from the container and flow into the bowl.
During use, the amount of composition remaining in the container gradually reduces and eventually it is necessary to renew the composition. In the case where the composition is in the form of a block, a replacement block, or refill, can be purchased for the container but opening the container and inserting a replacement block can sometimes be difficult when using conventional containers. Similar difficulties can be encountered when refilling the container with composition in liquid or gel form.
It is an object of the present invention to S provide a container in which the composition can be renewed in a simple manner.
According to the present invention there is provided a container for accommodating a composition for treating the water in the toilet bowl of a water closet, which container comprises a first component which includes a means to secure the container to the toilet bowl, and a second component in the form of a carrier for said composition slidable into and out of a receiving portion of the first component.
By means of the present invention, when the composition in the container has been used up, it is merely necessary to slide the carrier from the receiving portion and then drop fresh composition into the carrier before sliding the carrier back into the receiving portion.
In an embodiment, the carrier is in the form of a drawer, which is slidable into and out of the receiving portion without being readily detached therefrom.
The means to secure the container to the toilet bowl may be in the form of a hook-like portion enable the container to be suspended at the rim of a toilet bowl in a position where flushing water can enter the container and contact the composition.
Alternatively, the means to secure the container to the toilet bowl may be in the form of sucker pads capable of being held against the toilet bowl by atmospheric air pressure.
For a better understanding of the invention and to show how the same may be carried into effect, reference will now be made, by way of example, to the accompanying drawings, in which:- Figure 1 is a perspective view from the front of a container in accordance with the present invention with the components in a closed first relative position.
Figure 2 is a diagrammatic section through the container of Figure 1, Figure 3 is a view similar to that of Figure 1 with the components in an open second relative position, and Figure 4 is a diagrammatic section through the container of Figure 3.
Referring to the Figures, there is shown a container comprising a first component 1 including a receiving portion 2 in the form of a laterally open recess and a second component 3 also formed of plastics material in the form of a carrier for a block 4 of a composition for treating the water in the toilet bowl of a water closet. The carrier is open at its top and is slidably located within the receiving portion 2 in the manner of a captive drawer. Thus the carrier can slide with respect to the receiving portion between a closed first relative position and an open second relative position.
The first component 1 includes, within the receiving portion 2, a pair of first elongate mounting members each in the form of a tube 10 having at 4-.
free end an external annular lip 11 of increased diameter. The second component 3 includes, on the carrier, a pair of second elongate mounting members each in the form of a tube 12 having, at its free end, an internal annular lip 13 of decreased diameter. The relative shapes and dimensions of the first and second mounting members are such that each associated pair of first and second mounting members can be telescopically arranged. More particularly, in the embodiment shown, each second mounting member 12 can accommodate its associated first mounting member 10, with a gap between the first and second mounting members, so that the first mounting members 10 can slide axially within the second mounting members 12 with the lips 11 and 12 co operating together to prevent the mounting members 10 and 12 becoming separated when the carrier and the receiving portion are in said second relative position, at which position the second mounting member is somewhat downwardly inclined with respect to the first mounting member (as shown in Figure 4) as a consequence of the presence of said gap. Thus, although the carrier cannot be readily detached from the receiving portion 2, it can be moved with respect to the receiving portion 2 between the closed first position as shown in Figures 1 and 2 and the open second is position as shown in Figures 3 and 4.
The second component 3 includes a lug 14 at each side adapted to form an interference fit with a recess provided in the wall of the first component. When in their first relative position with each lug 14 mechanically engaged with its respective recess 15, the carrier and the receiving portion define a cage-like chamber for the block.
The container includes a hook-like portion in the form of a resilient strap 5 having one end attached to the first component 1 and a free end 6. Ordinariy, because of its resilient nature, the strap coils up about itself with the free end 6 in the middle of the coil as shown. In use, the consumer manually uncoils the strap and f its it over the rim (not shown) of the toilet bowl so that the chamber defined by the first and second components when in their first relative position is located in the path of the flushing water during the flushing operation.
During flushing, the flushing water enters into the chamber via upper apertures in the chamber wall and contacts the block 4 before leaving the chamber via lower apertures and then falling into the lower part of the toilet bowl. As it passes over the block 4 in the chamber, the flushing water entrains some of the composition of the block and this composition then treats the water in the toilet bowl.
Over the passage of time, all of the block 4 will have been used up. Then, the lugs 14 are depressed to disengage them from their respective recesses 15 and the carrier is slid out of the receiving portion 2 into the open second relative position (as shown in Figures 3 and 4) by axially displacing the tubes 12 of the second mounting members with respect to the tubes 10 of the first mounting members, the lips 11 and 13 preventing complete separation of the carrier and the receiving portion. In this second relative position, a fresh block 4 can be dropped into the carrier (as shown in Fig. 4). The carrier is then returned to the closed first relative position as shown in Figures 1 and 2.
Although the container as described above includes composition in the form of a coherent self-supporting block, it may be modified as appropriate in order to accommodate composition in liquid or gel form.
