Abstract
A mat (2, 3) includes an anti-slip lower sheet (21, 31) and an upper sheet (22, 32) made of a fabric material, such as a felt-like non-woven fabric or a tufted fabric, and superimposed on the lower sheet (21, 31). The upper sheet (22, 32) has a foot pad portion (223, 322) and a peripheral portion (222, 321) which substantially surrounds the foot pad portion (223, 322). The peripheral portion (222, 321) of the upper sheet (22, 32) is indented relative to a top surface (223a) of the foot pad portion (223, 322). The foot pad portion (223, 322) has an indented patterned area (224, 323).
Description
2337458 RAT WITH AN INDENTED PATTERN This invention relates to a mat, more
particularly to a mat having an indented pattern formed thereon.
Figures 1 and 2 illustrate a conventional mat which includes an anti-slip lower sheet 11 made of a plastic or rubber material, and an upper sheet 12 made of a non-woven fabric material. A label 14 with a pattern or a mark thereon is fixed to a top surface of the upper sheet 12. During fabrication of the conventional mat, the upper sheet 12 is superimposed on the lower sheet 11, and a frame member 13 is disposed around the upper and lower sheets 12, 11 to receive peripheral portions of the upper and lower sheets 12, 11 therein. Then, the frame member 13 is fixed to the upper and lower sheets 12, 11 by sewing along the frame member 13. The label 14, which is usually made of synthetic leather, is also fixed to the upper sheet 12 by means of sewing.
Although the conventional mat provides a felt-like top surface and an anti-slipping bottom surface for use as a mat, the conventional mat has a dull appearance. In addition, the production of the conventional mat involves labor-intensive works since the frame member 13 and the label 14 are fixed to the mat by sewing. Moreover, sutures are found around the label 14 and around the mat 1 to result in a disorderly appearance for the mat 1.
1 - -1 is The main object of the present invention is to provide a mat having an integral indented pattern formed thereon.
Accoidingly, the mat of the present invention includes an anti-slip flexible lower sheet and an upper sheet made of a fabric material and superimposed on the lower sheet. The upper sheet has a foot pad portion and a peripheral portion which substantially surrounds the foot pad portion. The peripheral portion of the upper sheet is indented relative to a top surface of the foot pad portion. The foot pad portion has an indented patterned area.
Other features and advantages of the present invention will become apparent in the following detailed description of the preferred embodiments with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective, view of a conventional mat; Figure 2 is a fragmentary cross-sectional view of the conventional mat; Figure 3 is a perspective view of a first preferred embodiment of the present invention; Figure 4 is a cross-sectional view of the first preferred embodiment; and Figure5 is a schematic view of a second preferred embodiment of the present invention.
2 il- Referring to Figures 3 and 4, the mat 2 of the first preferred embodiment of the present invention includes an anti-slip lower sheet 21 and an upper sheet 22 superimposed on the lower sheet 21. The lower sheet 21 is made of a flexible heat-sealable material, such as a plastic material as in the present embodiment, or a rubber material with an enhanced anti- slip effect. The lower sheet 21 has a bottom side formed with a plurality of rows of anti-slip downward protrusions 212.
The upper sheet 22 is made of a felt-like non-woven fabric material, and has a foot pad portion 223 and a peripheral portion 222 which surrounds the foot pad portion 223. The foot pad portion 223 further has an indented patterned area 224 presenting a symbol, a character, a figure, or a trademark. The peripheral portion 222 and the indented patterned area 224 have top surfaces 222a, 224a indented relative to a top surface 223a of the foot pad portion 223 by a height 23. The indented peripheral portion 222 and the indented patterned area 224 are formed by applying pressure and heat to the upper sheet 22.
During production of the mat 2, the superimposed upper and lower sheets 22, 21 are pressed and heated at a temperature of about 1500C with the use of a single press mold which has predetermined protruding parts to form simultaneously the indented peripheral portion 222 3 and the indented patterned area 224.
Referring to Figure 5, the mat 3 according to the second preferred embodiment of the present invention also includes an anti-slip flexible lower sheet 31 and an upper sheet 32 which is made of a tufted fabric material with a plurality of looped and non-looped fiber tufts. The mat 3 also has a foot pad portion 322 and an indented peripheral portion 321 which surrounds the foot pad portion 322. The foot pad portion 322 further has an indented patterned area 323. As shown, the upper sheet 32 has a plurality of looped fiber tufts in each of the peripheral portion 321 and the indented patterned area 323. The upper sheet 32 further has a plurality of non-looped fiber tufts in the foot pad portion 322 other than the indented patterned area 323. The non-looped fiber tufts in the foot pad portion 322 are formed by cutting off loops of fibers, and are taller than the looped fiber tufts of the peripheral portion 321 and the indented patterned area 323. The peripheral portion 321 and the indented patterned area 323 of the upper sheet 32 thus have top surfaces indented relative to a top surface of the foot pad portion 322.
Accordingly, the patterns formed by the indented patterned area 224, 323 of the upper sheet 22, 32 present a three-dimensional effect and result in a livelier appearance as compared to the conventional mat 4 1. In the first preferred embodiment, since the peripheral portion 222 and the indented patterned area 224 of the upper sheet 21 are pressed by a press mold, the binding effect between the upper and lower sheets 22, 21 can be enhanced, thereby eliminating the need for an additional frame member 13. Labor-intensive sewing works can be done away with. In addition, since the patterned area 224 can be formed simultaneously with the indented peripheral portion 222 with the use of a single press mold, the production of the mat 2 thus involves a simpler process than the production of the aforementioned conventional mat 1.

Claims (8)
1. A mat comprising: an anti-slip flexible lower sheet; and an upper sheet made of a fabric material and superimposed on said lower sheet, said upper sheet having a foot pad portion and a peripheral portion which substantially surrounds said foot pad portion, said peripheral portion of said upper sheet being indented relative to a top surface of said foot pad portion, said foot pad portion having an indented patterned area.
2. The mat according to Claim 1, wherein said upper sheet is made of a felt-like non-woven fabric material, said indented patterned portion being formed by applying pressure and heat to said upper sheet, said peripheral portion being indented under pressure and heat.
3. The mat according to Claim 2, wherein said lower sheet has a plurality of rows of anti-slip downward protrusions.
4. The mat according to Claim 1, wherein said upper sheet is a tufted fabric material.
5. The mat according to Claim 4, wherein said upper sheet has looped fiber tufts ineach of said peripheral portion and said indented patterned area, and nonlooped fiber tufts in said foot pad portion other than said indented patterned area, said non-looped fiber 6 tufts being taller than said looped fiber tufts.
6. The mat according to Claim 5, wherein said nonlooped fiber tufts are formed by cutting off loops.
7. The mat according to Claim 5, wherein said lower sheet has a plurality of rows of anti-slip downward protrusions.
8. The mat substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to and as illustrated in Figures 3 to 5 of the accompanying drawings.
