Abstract

A joist boxing system provides means for mounting material which is to cover the joist (9), comprising a bracket in two parts (1, 2). The parts are 'U' shaped in section and 'L' shaped in form, fit together around a joist (9) and are fixed together with fasteners (6). Spring retaining clips (3) may be permanently mounted on the inner surface of the internal corners of each of the bracket parts (1, 2), providing a means for holding the bracket in place around the joist (9) by gripping the bottom webs of the joist (9). Fixing holes may be provided along vertical outside edges of the bracket and along the bottom edges of the bracket for the purpose of fixing covering material, and in the latter case also for fixing the two parts (1, 2) of the bracket together. The horizontal portions of each of the bracket parts (1, 2) may be constructed such that one leg is able to slidably mount within the other, thus allowing the bracket to adjust in width.

Description

t JOIST BOXING BRACKET 2336380 This invention relates to a method of
enclosing a reinforced steel joist for cosmetic purposes.
At present, after a reinforced steel joist has been instaHed within a budding the main method of enclosing h is by the use of plaster type boards which surround the visible sides and bottom face. The methods of fitment for these boards are as fbUows. Either pieces of wood are driven into the hollow sides of the joist jamming them into position, onto which the boards are fixed to, or a ladder type arrangement the length of the joist is fabricated from wood, attached to the ceiling above the joist, and positioned as close to the sides of the joist as possible. The boards are then fixed to this arrangement and finished in the usual way.
According to the present invention there are provided a set of brackets each comprising of two parts, these are made of U section material formed into an 'L' shape, with the inside faces left open. These parts slide together to form a U shape which can be adjusted to various sizes. This is placed around the joist's sides and bottom faces. There are holes running the length of the bottom outer edges of the brackets to allow fasteners to secure the two halves of the bracket together in the correct position. These holes also provide a method of securing the bottom piece of covering board to the bracket. Clips located the internal corner of each half of the bracket protrude above the horizontal legs, these hook over the top of the bottom webs of the joist holding the brackets up in place under the bottom face. On the outer sides of the vertical legs of the brackets there are holes positioned along the length, these are provided for a means of fixing the side pieces or board to the bracket.
The brackets are positioned along the length of the reinforced steel joist at even intervals. The covering material is then fixed to vertical and bottom legs and finished in the usual wav.
The specific fitment of this invention will eow be described with reference to the accompanied drawings.
Figure 1 shows a view of the two halves of the bracket in there preassembled state. The bottom leg of piece 1 is able to slide inside the bottom leg of piece 2 this is shown by the dotted lines. Around the outer edges of the brackets are positioned holes 4 and 5 these are for fixing the two halves of the bracket together and also providing a rnmn of attaching the covering boards. Pieces 3 are the retaining clips which hold the bracket in place around the joist.
Figure 2 shows a cross sectional view of a bm&d in its fitted state around a joist. The left-hand frame 1 is positioned around thejoist 9 with the chp 3 over the top of the bottom web of the joist. The right- hand ftwe 2 is then positioned on the opposite side of the joist, sliding the two bottom legs of the frames together, again ensuring the clip 3 is over the joist web. Fasteners 6 are then used to secure thc'two halves together through the holes 4.
These assemblies are then placed at intervals along the length of the joist. Covering boards 8 are then cut to size to cover the joist and the bn, these are then secured to the brackets by means of screws 7, using the holes 5 on the veffical sides and holes 4 for the bottom piece.
