Abstract
A system for worldwide tracking of, location of and communications with sub-miniature terminals, sufficiently small to be concealed. It may be used, typically, to exchange brief messages with boats or to track or locate lost or stolen boats. The system comprises a monitoring station, a link via a ground station to a worldwide communication network, and the terminals. These terminals may be concealed in or about an object or a piece of equipment and may be controlled remotely from the monitoring station or locally through a control panel, which may also be connected to other control systems. Each terminal comprises a GPS receiver, a means to receive and transmit data via the worldwide communication network, an internal battery, a power management system and a dedicated circuit for receiving, processing, storing and outputting data. It may be connected to an external power supply.
Description
1 2332319 System for Worldwide Communication with Sub-lkliniature
Terminals This invention relates to a system for worldwide location of, tracking of and communication with sub-miniature terminals, which are sufficiently small to be concealed.
There are systems already in operation for locating tracking and communicating with mobile terminals, such as those installed in cars, in boats, on containers and in other equipment. Such systems may be based on terrestrial and/or satellite networks. Terminals are available in a variety of sizes, with a variety of capabilities. Systems which utilise sub-miniature terminals currently operate within restricted geographical areas. Those which operate worldwide currently have terminals which are relatively large and expensive.
-n I he present invention utilises terminals sufficiently small to be concealed, while being based on a worldwide communication network.
The system comprises a monitoring station with the means to receive, process, store, display and transmit data (this could be a proprietary PC with dedicated software), a link (this could be a proprietary modem), to connect the monitoring station.%,ia a ground station (such as that operated or proposed by Station 12 or by BT) to a worldwide communication network (such as the D+ network newly opened by Inmarsat), and the terminals. These terminals may be concealed in or about an object or a piece of equipment and may be connected to an external power supply. They may be controlled remotely from the monitoring station or locally through a security coded control panel, which mkv also be linked to other control systems. Each terminal occupies a volume of less than 1.5 litres. It is based on a proprietary unit (such as that offered by Japan Radio) which comprises a GPS receiver and the means to receive and transmit data via the network mentioned above. In addition, each terminal includes an internal battery, a power management system and a dedicated circuit capable of receiving, processing, storing and outputting data. It is this circuit which enables the system to operate as described.
A spec-ific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example.
A boat, which can travel throughout the world, may be lost or stolen. The present invention may assist in the location ancL.!or recovery of lost or stolen boats. When linked to an intruder alarm. it may also help prevent theft. The tem including its antennae, is concealed and built into the boat. It is connected to a control panel and to a power supply such as the boat's batteries or a wind generator. It continuously monitors its current position from the GPS and communicates -this to the monitoring station if and when programmed or requested to do so. The monitoring station => Z:1 can thus locate and track the boat.
If the power supply or control panel connection is cut or if contact with the terminal is lost or if the terminal moves outside previoush, set lin-dts. the relevant alarm is triggered in the monitoring station so that appropriatle action may be taken. This may include communicating the latest transrrUtted position to the owner or to a public body such as the coast- ard or the police.
I g u Positional limits may be set either from 'the control panel or from the morutoring station. If the 01 control panel has a display, brief messages may also be exchanged between the boat and the morldtoring station. such as arrn,,al details cr requests for assistance. The control panel may. OV linked to another control system such as an intruder alarm and programmed so that anv intrusion is con-u-nunicated to the rnorUtoring station. In this case, the control panel may be enivloyed to in leumnu ie whether or not the ' auder is a bona fide member of the crew.
2_ CLALMS 1 A system for worldwide tracking of, location of and communications with sub-miniature terminals which are sufficiently small to be concealed. The system comprises a monitoring station _ss means to receive, process, store, display and transmit data. a link, to connect the monitoring station to a worldwide communication network, and the temlinalsi-A terminal may be concealed in or about an object or a piece of equipment and may be connecte,& to an external power supplyl 'it may be controlled remotely from the monitoring stationfpr locally through a I= L -1 security coded control pane [which may also be linked to other control systems. Eachterminal includes a GPS receiver, the means to receive and transmit data via the world,i'de communication network mentioned above, an internal battery, a power management system and a dedicated circuit for receiving, processing, storing and outputting, data.
A s-,.stem substantialb, as described herein in the paragraphs relating to lost or stolen boats.
