Abstract

A method of securing a circular member to the end of a tubular body and more particularly to a conveyor idler roller in which a bearing housing 3 is secured to each end of a cylindrical tube 1. The bearing housings 3 each having a circumferential groove 9. Each bearing housing 3 is at least partly fittable in an end of the cylindrical tube 1 and the respective ends 12 of the tube 1 deformed into the circumferential grooves 9. The tube 1 and bearing housings 3 may be made of a plastics material. To secure the bearing housings 3 to the tube 1, the end of the tube may be pre-heated and the bearing housing pressed into the tube end by an axial force applied to a die 10.

Description

A METHOD OF SECURING A CIRCULAR MEMBER TO THE END OF A TUBULAR BODY DES^RT?TIQN THIS INVENTION relates to a method of securing a circular member to the end of a tubular body and, more particularly, but not exclusively, to the securing of a bearing housing to the end of the tube of a conveyor idler roller.
/The invention The invention further extends to a tubular body and circular member which are secured to each other according to the invention.
BACKGROUND TO THE INVENTION Conventionally, a conveyor idler roller is manufactured from a circular cylindrical steel tube. A bearing housing is fitted to each of the ends of the steel tube. A bearing is mounted in each of the housings and the bearings are mounted on a shaft. The shaft is mounted in a frame.
Conveyor belts are often used under dusty conditions, and seizure of the bearings of an idler roller is not uncommon.
When this happens, the conveyor belt can eventually wear through the steel tube leaving a sharp edge which may catch against projections and joints of the conveyor belt. This will normally damage the conveyor belt.
/When the When the bearing of several idler rollers have seized, it results in high belt drag which will increase power consumption and may eventually lead to an overload trip of the conveyor electrical drive motor.
The tube of the idler rollers may be manufactured from a plastics material. With such a plastics tube, it is, however, a problem to secure a bearing housing to each of the ends of the tube.
OBJECT OF THE INVENTION It is the object of this invention to provide a method of securing a circular member to the end of a tubular body, and more particularly, to securing a bearing housing to the end of a plastics tubular body.
SUMMARY OF THE INNENTION According to this invention, there is provided a method of securing a circular member to the end of a tubular body, the method comprising positioning a circular member circular member having a circumferential groove, in an open end of the tubular body and deforming the open end of the tubular body into the circumferential groove.
A further feature of this invention provides for the circular member to be a bearing housing.
Further features of this invention provide for the tubular body to be the tube of a conveyor belt idler roller, for the tubular body to be made of a plastics material, and for the bearing housing to be made of a plastics material.
The invention also extends to a conveyor idler roller comprising a cylindrical tube made of a plastics material, two bearing housings each having a circumferential groove, each bearing housing being at least partly fittable in an end of the cylindrical tube and the ends of the cylindrical tube being deformed into the circumferential grooves of the bearing housings.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS A preferred embodiment of the invention is described below, by way of example only, and with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 is a cross-sectional view of one end of a conveyor idler roller; and Figure 2 is a cross-sectional outline view of the conveyor idler roller shown in Figure 1 also showing an end tube former.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS Referring to Figure 1, a circular cylindrical tube (1) of a conveyor belt idler roller (2) is shown.
The tube (1) is made of a plastics material which preferably is unplasticized polyvinylchloride ("UPVC").
A bearing housing (3) is secured to each end of the tube (1). The bearing housing (3) has an axial /opening (4) opening (4) therethrough. The bearing housing (3) further has an axial recess (5) at its inner end in which is fitted a suitable bearing (6). The bearing (6) is carried on a shaft (7) which passes through an opening (4). The ends of the shaft (6) are appropriately machined as indicated at (8) for mounting in a support frame (not shown) in conventional manner.
A plurality of such conveyor belt idler rollers are mounted in the support frame to support a conveyor belt running over them.
This invention is concerned with the mounting of the bearing housing (3) to the end of the tube (1).
The bearing housing (3) has formed therein a circumferential "V"-shaped groove (9).
To secure the bearing housing (3) to the tube, the end of the tube (1) is pre-heated. The bearing housing is located in a tube end die (10) shown in Figure 2. The bearing housing (3) is pressed into the tube (1) and an axial force is applied on the /die (10).
die (10). The die (10) is internally shaped to fit tightly over the tube (1), and further has an internal shoulder (11) which, in use, exerts a radially inward force on the end (12) of the tube (1) which results in the deformation of the end (12) of the tube into the groove (9).
A circumferential recess (13) is provided at the inner end of the axial recess (5). The recess (13) serves as a reservoir for a lubricant. The recess (13) may also have a sealing device (14) which inhibits the ingress of moisture and dirt into the bearing. The sealing device will be manufactured from a non ferrous material, preferably a copper alloy.
It must be understood that variations can be made to the above described embodiment without departing from the scope of the invention.
The circumferential groove in the bearing housing may have any shape, and its position on the circumference may be varied.
/Other methods Other methods may also be employed to deform the tube end (12) into the groove (9).
