Abstract

A thermostatic filling and backwash valve assembly comprises a valve body 10 fitted with a protruding water inlet 12, with the drain connection 14 discharging to an open drainage receptacle. Water flows through inlet 12 into the tank in the direction shown and creates a vacuum at the discharge connection 14, prohibiting water discharging directly to drain. When the flow ceases from inlet 12 the water in the tank "backwashes" to discharge connection 14. The "fill and backwash" cycle continues until the heat generated by the machine reaches a pre-set temperature, which activates a localised or remote sensing device and causes the valve to close. When steam generation has ceased and the temperature drops, the same localised or remote sensor will cause the valve to open allowing the tank to drain automatically.

Description

THERMOSTATIC FILLING AND BACKWASH VALVE This invention relates to a thermostatic filling and backwash valve.
The generation of steam causes the solids in the water to build-up within the generator equipment. It is known that if water is regularly drained from the steam generator tank and replaced with clean fresh water the forming of scale can be reduced. This has been achieved in the past by electronic or electro-mechanical methods.
The present invention facilitates the operation with neither electromechanical means or electronic circuitry.
The invention is the adaptation of a thermostatic valve fitted with a protruding water inlet to the upstream end of the valve.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing in which: Figure 1 shows a cut-away section of the valve indicating flow directions; Figure 2 shows an elevation of the valve and water inlet.
Referring to the drawing the assembly consists of the valve body 10 fitted with a protruding water inlet 12. The drain connection 14 discharges to an open drainage receptacle.
When water is flowing through inlet 12 into the tank in the direction shown, a vacuum is created at the discharge connection 14. This prohibits water flowing to the discharge connection 14. When the flow ceases from inlet 12 the water in the tank "backwashes" to discharge connection 14. The "fill and backwash" cycle continues until the heat generated by the machine reaches a pre-set temperature, which activates a localised or remote sensing device and causes the valve to close.
When steam generation has ceased, and the localised or remote sensor detects the temperature drop, the valve will open allowing the tank to drain automatically.
