Abstract

A rear seat assembly 10 is disclosed in which a pivotable backrest portion 13 of the rear seat assembly has a cavity 20 which in combination with a pivotable backboard 16 defines a storage compartment in a rear side of the backrest portion 13. The backboard 16 can be folded down to define in conjunction with the cavity a storage compartment in the vehicle rear.

Description

A Motor Vehicle Rear Seat Assemblv This invention relates to motor vehicles and in particular to a rear seat assembly for a motor vehicle.
It is known to provide a folding rear seat assembly for a motor vehicle having a backrest portion and a seat portion that are pivotally connected together so as to allow for the backrest portion to be folded down into a substantially horizontal position. It is a problem with such vehicles that it is difficult to provide a secure storage compartment for valuables carried within the motor vehicle. In addition, in the case of a small vehicle storage space itself may be at a premium.
It is an object of this invention to provide an improved rear seat assembly for a motor vehicle.
According to the invention there is provided a motor vehicle rear seat assembly having a backrest portion and a seat portion, the backrest portion having a front side for supporting in use the back of a passenger and a rear side having a cavity therein wherein a backboard is pivotally connected to the backrest portion for rotation about the same pivot axis to define in combination with said cavity a storage compartment.
The backboard may be pivotable from a first position in which it lies adjacent to said backrest and a second position in which it lies substantially horizontal to form a flat floor member for a luggage compartment of the motor vehicle to which the seat assembly is fitted.
The backboard may be lockable in said first position to define a lockable storage compartment in the rear side of the backrest.
The backboard may be lockable in said second position to define a lockable storage compartment under the backboard in a luggage compartment of a motor vehicle.
Preferably the rear seat may have two backrest portions each of which has a cavity therein defining in combination with a respective pivotable backboard a storage compartment.
The or each backrest portion may be pivotable from a substantially upright position to a substantially horizontal position in which the cavity forms a picnic tray.
The invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing of which: Fig.1 is a perspective view of a motor vehicle rear seat assembly according to the invention showing two backrest portions in a substantially upright position; and Fig.2 is a perspective view of a motor vehicle rear seat assembly according to the invention showing a pair of backrest portions in a substantially horizontal position.
With reference to Fig.1 there is shown a rear seat assembly 10 having a seat portion 12 and a pair of pivotable backrest portions 13, 15 each of the backrest portions 13, 15 having a head rest 11, 14 associated therewith.
The backrest portions 13, 15 are pivotally connected to part of the structure of a motor vehicle 5 to which the seat assembly 10 is fitted by means of a bracket 21 and transverse pivot shaft 22.
Each of the backrest portions 13, 15 has a cavity 20 defined therein.
The cavities 20 define in combination with pivotable backboard members 16 storage compartments in a rear side of the backrest portions 13, 15. Each of the rear backrest portions 13, 15 has a front side for supporting in use the back of a passenger and the rear side having the cavity 20 therein.
The pivotable backboard members 16 are pivotable about the same pivot axis as the backrest portions 13, 15 and are connected to the same transverse pivot shaft 22. This allows the backboards 16 to be pivoted irrespective of the position of the backrest portions 13, 15.
Fig. 1 shows two alternative backboard arrangements, on the left hand side there is shown a three-quarter backboard 16 which does not completely cover the cavity 20 in the left hand backrest portion 13. On the right hand side there is shown a full length backboard 16 that fully covers the cavity 20 in the right hand backrest portion 15.
With reference to the left hand rear backrest portion it will be appreciated that the combination of the three-quarter length backboard 16 and the cavity 20 form an open-topped storage cavity that can be used to store small articles such as maps, rain jackets or the like.
An aperture 17 is formed in the left hand backboard 16 to assist with displacement of the backboard 16 from the position shown in Fig.1 to a substantially horizontal position.
The right hand backrest portion 15 and the full length backboard 16 form a closed compartment which is held in a closed state by means of a locking mechanism 19, 24, 25, 26. Such a lockable compartment is useful for the storage of valuables or other small items such as a first aid kit or a tool kit. An aperture 18 is formed in the backboard 16 to assist with movement of the backboard from the position shown in Figure 1 to a substantially horizontal position.
With particular reference to Fig.2 there is shown a rear seat assembly 10 that is in many respects the same as that shown in Fig. 1 but in which two full length backboards 16 have been used.
In Fig.2 the backrest portions 13, 15 are folded forward into a substantially horizontal position so that they lie adjacent to the seat portion 12 and the backboards 16 are folded down to a horizontal position in which they form a storage compartment with the structure 6 defining a luggage compartment of the motor vehicle.
The backboards 16 can if required be locked into this position to provide a small secure compartment within the rear luggage compartment of the motor vehicle.
As shown on Fig.2 the rear backboard member 16 is fitted with a locking means in the form of a pair of rods connected to a pivotable arm 26.
Each of the rods 24, 25 is engageable with an aperture 23 in a wall of the cavity 20 in the right rear backrest portion 15. A key lock 19 is provided to allow the arm 26 to be rotated into or out of a locked position by a key (not shown) when required.
When the backrests 13, 15 are in the position shown in Figure 2 the cavities 20 can be conveniently used to define a picnic tray in which picnic articles can be placed.
It will be appreciated that even when the backrests 13, 15 are in the upright position it is possible to lower the backboards 16 into the horizontal position to define a small secure compartment within the luggage compartment of the motor vehicle. As the backboards 16 are pivoted about the same axis as the backrests 13, 15 the position of the backrests 13, 15 does not effect the operation of the backboards 16.
