Abstract
A process for removing volatile organic compounds from a fluid comprises contacting the fluid with an organo or inorgano clay in a container. Preferably, the container is a filter bag and may include a closure device. The fluid is either air or a liquid.
Description
ENVIRONMENTAL CONTROL
This inventIon atas to environmental control, and more particularly to Ine controi or volatile organis compounds in an air stream and in other situations.
It has been well established that organo/inorgano clays, such as those used, for example, in the treatment process operated under the name ENVIROTREAT (R.T.M.), react with a very wide variety of organic compounds which are found in contaminated land. The organo/inorgano clays react with volatile organic compounds through a number of complex chemical bonding processes. The various organic compounds react in different ways depending upon the structure thereof and the chemical groups from which they are constituted, but typical bonding processes will include
Lewis acid/base bonding, Van der Waals reaction,
Hydrogen bonding, transition metal ligand bonding and absorption due to hydrophobicity.
The present invention proposes to treat volatile organic compounds in airstreams and in liquids.
According to the present invention, there is provided a process for the treatment of volatile organic compounds in an airstream or in a liquid, the process comprising passing said airstream through, or subjecting said liquid to, a quan, .y of organo/inorgano clay in a container.
In a first embodiment of the invention, volatile organic compounds are removed from a waste airstream, such as, for example, from a process plant or factory which is generating the pollution, by subjecting said airstream to a quantity of organo/inorgano clay. The organo/inorgano clay will be located in a container,.more particularly a filter bag, the airstream being passed through said container so as to obtain an efficient mass transfer between the gaseous and solid phases.
The amount of clay, in powder form, used in a particular application and to achieve the desired absorption rate of the volatile organic compounds into the clay, will be dependent upon the type of pollutants being removed from the airstreams, the allowable pressure drop in the system, the required life span of the charge of organo/inorgano clay used, and the volume of the air stream.
A typical absorption rate is approximately 1:20, although, as will be appreciated, this will vary and will be totally dependent upon the pollutants being removed.
The reactions which occur between the organo/inorgaro clays) and volatile organic compounds are irreversible and the material created by the bonding processes is stable and inert. Thus, the material created can be safely disposed of in normal land-fill sites. It may even improve the quality of the site because the organo/inorgano clays are used in the treatment of contaminated land.
A second embodiment of the invention relates to the removal of volatile organic compounds from liquids and waste organic materials which are generated in the home and in other situations such as spent cooking fat, waste engine oil, washing liquids from painting processes and similar substances.
A quantity of organo/inorgano clay will be contained in a vessel such as a bucket or similar container, the bucket or other container being provided with a lid or other closure device to prevent the escape of fumes. The waste material(s) are poured into the vessel and will react with the organo/inorgano clay - as referred to above - to form a safe and stable material which can be disposed of in a normal disposal system.
The quantity of waste organic material which can be treated will be dependent upon the amount of the organo inorgano clay employed, the nature of the contaminants, and the size of the container.
Thus, the invention provides an effective and relatively inexpensive way of treating volatile organic compounds, not only in industrial situations but also in domestic situations, and in a way that the material can be safely disposed of after treatment.
