Abstract

The invention relates to a process for preparing monoester of 1,3-diols. The invention relates to a process for preparing in particular 2.2,4-trimethyl-1,3-pentanediol monoisobutyrate, according to which process isobutyraldehyde is brought into contact with an alkalihydroxide catalyst. The alkali hydroxide catalyst used according to the invention is a dilute solution of lithium hydroxide, in which the concentration of lithium hydroxide is about 1 - 12 % by weight. An aqueous solution containing about 2 - 10 % by weight of sodium hydroxide and about 0.1 - 6 % by weight of lithium hydroxide, is used preferably. This enhances selectivity with respect to 1,3-diols, with an increased conversion of the aldehyde into a monoester and a subsequent decrease in recirculation volumes in the preparation process.
