Abstract

A secret fixing bracket for fascia boards having a first securing portion (10) for attachment to the rear of the fascia board from which extends a second securing portion (11) for attachment to a roof spar through apertures (13) by nails or the like and means (12) for securably clamping the first securing means (10) in a groove provided in the rear of a fascia board.

Description

SECRET FIXING BRACKET The present invention relates to secret fixings, more particularly for fascia boards for use in the building industry.
At present, for the fixing of fascia boards to the ends of spars or roof timbers, the traditional method is to drive nails through the fascia board into the ends of sufficient of the spars to securely fix such. The fascia boards are then utilised for the fixing of guttering etc..
A problem with existing methods is that such technique leaves the nail heads exposed, which can spoil the appearance of the fascia board, particularly when utilised with U-PVC fascia.
Accordingly, it is an ' object of the present invention to seek to provide a secret fixing which enables a fascia board to be securely fixed to the roof spars without the need for through-nailing and which can be easily and reliably attached to accommodate a variety of thicknesses and anglings of spar timbers.
According to the present invention there is provided a bracket for secret fixing of fascia boards, comprising: a first securing portion which is removably attachable to the rear face of a fascia board and a second securing portion attachable to a spar, said first and second securing portions being integrally formed or adjustably hingeably interconnected.
The first securing portion is preferably an expandable clip portion removably and adjustably locatable within a groove provided in the rear of the fascia board.
The groove may be prepared on-site utilising a router or may be provided in a pre-formed fascia board, direct from the supplier. The second securing portion is preferably a plane flange extending from the first securing portion and provided with a plurality of apertures for receiving fixing means, for example, screws or nails for attaching the flange to a roof spar thereby supporting the bracket and a fascia board on the roof spar. A plurality of such fixings will be provided for each section of fascia board securing such at appropriate intervals to the required number of spars.
Once attached and appropriate soffit boards fitted the brackets are entirely hidden.
The present invention will now be described further, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:- Fig. 1 shows a side elevation of a bracket according to the present invention; Fig. 2 shows an end elevation of the bracket according to the present invention; Fig. 3 shows a plan view from above of the bracket according to the present invention; and Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the bracket according to the present invention.
Referring now to the drawings, it can be seen from Fig. 1 that the bracket comprises a first securing portion 10, which in the preferred embodiment has splayed flanged ends which are intended to be received in a dovetail groove provided in the rear of a fascia board. For installation, the U-shaped securing portion is provided such that such will easily locate in such a groove and when the position has been determined along the groove, for location of the bracket, the side shanks of the U-shaped portion can be spaced apart by means of the screw 12 which operates to force the shanks apart and wedge the splayed-out end portions in the groove in the rear of the fascia panel.
The second securing portion 11 is suitably an elongate flange extending from the base of the first securing portion 10 and is provided with a plurality of apertures 13 by means of which such bracket can be secured to the side of a roof spar for supporting the fascia board.
In the preferred embodiment, as shown, the second securing means (flange 11) is angled with respect to the Ushaped securing portion 10 to accommodate the pitch of the roof spar, which are normally 4" deep, thereby allowing for an amount of vertical adjustment of the fascia board with respect to the spar.
The bracket as shown is constructed of galvanised sheet metal, e.g. steel, but is preferably constructed from a plastics material having the required characteristics, i.e. of a rigid/semi-rigid plastics material, which will not become brittle with age. Further, although a screw has been utilised for clamping the bracket 10 in a groove, alternative means may be supplied for example a cam-acting clamping means, or the like, of known type.
Whilst the bracket as shown is preferably secured within a dove-tail groove in the rear fascia board, other configurations of groove or slot can be provided, if preferred.

Claims (7)

1. A bracket for secret fixing of fascia board to roofing spars comprising a first securing portion removably attachable to the rear of a fascia board and a second securing portion attachable to a roofing spar.
2. A bracket as claimed in claim 1 in which said first securing portion comprises a U-shaped bracket having splayed open ends for engagement in a dove-tail groove provided in the rear of a fascia board, the legs/shanks of the U-shaped member being incapable of being biased apart to clampingly engage such in said groove, in use.
3. A bracket as claimed in claim 1 or 2 in which said second securing portion comprises a plain flan extending from the base of said U-shaped portion and securable, in use, to a roof spar.
4. A fixing bracket as claimed in claim 2 in which the shanks of the U-shaped fixing member are biased apart by means of a clamping/tensioning screw.
5. A bracket as claimed in claim 2 in which the legs of the U-shaped portion are biased apart by means of a camoperated tensioning means.
6. A bracket as claimed in claim 1, in which the first and second securing means are adjustably hingedly interconnected.
7. A bracket as claimed in any preceding claim substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
