Abstract

A composition for colouring human skin comprises one or more dyes, preferably a combination of a cyan, orange and red dye, a humectant, an emollient and a filler dispersed in a mixture of ethanol and water. The composition which may be a solution or gel can optionally also comprise a transparent film-forming component or water-repellant component. Alternatively this component is provided separately for subsequent application to the dyed skin. The composition is particularly intended for application to the lips, cheeks or eyelids and a longer lasting colouration of the skin is claimed.

Description

PREPARATION FOR TOPICAL APPLICATION TO COLOUR HUMAN SKIN This invention relates to a preparation for topical application to human skin which provides long lasting colouration of the treated areas.
From time immemorial it has been the practice of many humans to colour parts of the body for various purposes.
At the present time it is the custom of many females to enhance or alter the hue of the colouration of the lips. A number of preparations are available for this purpose under the generic term 'lipsticks'. Such preparations usually consist of one or more finely divided dyes or pigments carried by a hydrated oil or wax mixture that remains solid at ambient temperatures but is soft enough to cause transfer to the skin when rubbed across it. Such preparations have a transient effect only and must be re-applied every two or three hours to maintain the desired effect. Long lasting colouration may be obtained by tattooing the lips so that pigments are permanently embedded in the skin. However variations in hue are not possible unless supplemented by lip coating and removal is effectively impossible.
Other areas of skin are also frequently coloured for cosmetic purposes such as the eyelids and cheeks.
The present invention provides a preparation that may be applied to human skin which has a long lasting colouring effect.
According to the present invention there is provided a preparation for topical application to the human skin comprising a solution of one or more dyes substantive to skin tissue.
The preparation may be applied as a solution using a brush or spray. Alternatively it may be mixed with adjuvants to form a cream or a semi-solid composition which can be applied by rubbing against the relevant skin areas.
To form such semi-solid compositions the dye solution can be mixed with or formed into a gel or incorporated into a thickened cream base such as a wax based composition.
The dyes used must be soluble in a non-toxic and water miscible solvent and substantive to skin tissue. This requirement is met by many acid dyes of the type used for dyeing wool, silk and other proteinaceous materials including foodstuffs. Such dyes carry at least one carboxyl, sulphonyl or hydroxyl group and tend to be both absorbed and form a chemical bond with the skin protein.
As a single dye seldom produces a desired shade of colour in the preferred embodiments a mixture of two or more dyes in combination is used. By varying the proportions of the dyes used a range of shades may be obtained. In general the hues of the dyes chosen to combine will follow the principles of subtractive colour mixing. For a wide gamut of colours the conventional cyan, magenta and yellow combination is be used. However a more restricted range, adequate for application to the lips and skin, can be achieved with the combination of a cyan, orange and red dyes.
Further adjuvants may be included such as bactericides, anti-oxidants, perfumes and flavourings in known manner.
When applied the dissolved dyes in the preparation migrate into the skin tissue where they are retained by reaction in a manner that resists removal by simple surface abrasion or washing. To enhance the life the dyed skin may be overcoated with a transparent film-forming composition such as a solution of hydroxypropyl methylcellulose or a water repellent material such as a silicone derivative. In an alternative embodiment the protective film forming material and/or the water repellent material may be included within the applied dye preparation.
It is found that a single application of the preparation according to the invention will provide an appropriately coloured skin area. The coloured area is resistant to wear and most environments so that a single application to the lips or around the eyes can last for at least 18 hours and often longer. Where bright sunshine is encountered, for instance when sailing or water skiing, the preparation preferably contains one or more ultra-violet radiation absorbing compounds to shield the colourant dyes.
While the fading effect of the radiation is minor it takes place at different rates for each dye of a mixture and may cause a small hue change on the applied areas.
In order that the invention may be clearly understood a preparation according to the invention will now be described.
EXAMPLE A composition was prepared containing the following ingredients dispersed in a mixture of ethanol and water.
glycerol humectant acrylate/octylacrylamide copolymer waterproofing agent isostearyl alcohol emollient hydroxymethylcellulose thickener dyes CI 16035 Food Red 17 CI 45370 Acid Orange 11 CI 45410 Acid Red 92 CI 42090 Acid Blue 9 CI 47005 Acid Yellow 3 CI 42051 Acid Blue 3 The ratios and quantities of the acid dyes incorporated into the composition can be varied to obtain a wide range of shades when applied to skin.
When applied to human lip tissue the pigmentation obtained lasted up to 24 hours before re-application was required.
The preparations according to the invention retain their colourant effect overnight and are useful for air hostesses and similar workers who have long tours of duty during which time they must remain well groomed with little or no time available for make-up repair. Due to the wide range of hues possible by manipulation of the dye ratios compositions suitable for colouring eyelids and the creation by artistic application or transfer simulated tattoos.
