Abstract
An acoustic composite material comprises a fibrous blanket layer (1) having adhesively bonded to it an acoustic barrier layer (8) to which is adhesively bonded a protective layer (5). The layers (5) and (8) together constitute a vapour barrier. A scrim (7) of glass fibre may be interposed between the layers (5) and (8). Alternatively two layers (10,12) of blanket material are adhesively bonded to form a sandwich with an acoustic barrier layer (14) therebetween. At least one layer of the fibrous blanket material is covered with a vapour barrier material (16,18). The acoustic barrier layer may be a filled polymeric material or lead. The protective material may be metallic foil. In the alternative embodiment the vapour barrier layer may be of PVC coated glass cloth, silicon coated polymeric material or metallic foil.
Description
Acoustic Composite Material
This invention relates to an acoustic composite material and a method of manufacturing said material.
Known from U.K. Patent Specification No. 2 261 846 is an acoustic composite material using a quilted pad of glass or mineral fibres and which, together with a reflective layer and an intermediate acoustic barrier layer, are bonded together using heat and pressure.
The aim of the present invention is to provide a simpler, equally efficient acoustic composite material, in two forms both of which can be more easily and less expensively manufactured.
According to one aspect of the present invention, there is provided an acoustic composite material comprising a fibrous blanket, a protective layer adhesively overlying one face of the blanket and an acoustic barrier layer interposed between the protective layer and the blanket, the protective layer and the acoustic barrier layer being bonded together to constitute a vapour barrier, and this vapour barrier layer being adhesively bonded to the blanket. The material in accordance with this aspect of the invention is especially suitable as a lagging material.
According to a second aspect of the invention, the said acoustic layer and protective layer are adhesively bonded together to form a vapour barrier layer and the latter is adhesively bonded to the fibrous blanket.
According to still another aspect of the present invention, there is provided an acoustic composite material comprising two layers of fibrous blanket having sandwiched between them an acoustic barrier layer and on the face of at least one of the layers of fibrous blanket a sheet material constituting a vapour barrier.
This material is suitable for use as an acoustic absorber and barrier.
In both aspects, the fibrous blanket is preferably made of polyester fibres first spun and then matted under heat and pressure, as by means of heated rollers, to form a non-delaminating pad. Quilting with the aid of facing scrims is thereby rendered unnecessary. Moreover, in accordance with the invention, layers to be bonded together can be so bonded adhesively, as by means of a spray adhesive.
A suitable, finished blanket material is commercially available under the Trade
Mark "Fiberform".
In the first embodiment, a suitable protective layer may be made from metallic (aluminium) foil of between 2 and 150 microns, preferably about 20 microns, thickness, but any material having vapour barrier, wear and fire retardance properties may be used instead. For example, a PVC coated scrim (e.g. 50 to 300 g/m2) may be used to reinforce the metallic foil.
Conveniently, in the first embodiment, the acoustic barrier layer may be a polymeric material, for example a chlorinated polyethylene based material, with a surface density between 1 and 15 kg/m2. This layer may be loaded with a high density filler such as barium sulphate. The acoustic barrier layer may instead be made of a PVC based material or a material based on ethylene vinyl acetate.
In the second embodiment, a similar acoustic barrier layer may be employed as in the first embodiment, but alternatively a lead or polymeric layer may be used.
The vapour barrier layer made be of PVC coated glass cloth.
Reverting to the fibrous blanket, in the first embodiment this may have a thickness in the range 5 to 40 mm, and a volume density in the range 5 to 30 kg/m3. In the second embodiment, two layers of thickness each in the range 5 to 25 mm may be used.
Unlike the method of manufacture described in U.K. Patent Specification No. 2 261 846, it is unnecessary to employ a heated press to bond layers together in either the first or second aspects of the invention.
The invention is further described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 shows a first example of the acoustic composite material; and
Figure 2 shows a second example.
This material shown in Figure 1 comprises a polyester fibre blanket 1, typically a blanket of the material known by the Trade Mark "Fiberform". It may conveniently be about 20 mm thick.
Bonded by spray adhesive to the fibrous blanket 1 is a vapour barrier layer constituted by a protective layer 5 and an acoustic barrier layer 8. The protective layer 5 is constituted by a 2 mm thick aluminium foil 6 and the acoustic barrier 8 is constituted by 3 mm thickness chlorinated polyethylene with a surface density of between 2 and 15 kg/m2, loaded with barium sulphate.
The layers 5 and 8 may be bonded together via a scrim 7 of 6 mm square pattern glass fibres, and the resulting vapour barrier layer is then bonded to the fibrous blanket, also by spray adhesive.
In the embodiment of Figure 2, two layers 10, 12 of the blanket material, e.g.
Fiberform (Trade Mark), say about 10 mm thick, are adhesively bonded to form a sandwich with an acoustic barrier layer 14 between them. The layer 14 may be of lead, PVC, EVA or EPDM having a surface density in the range 3 kg/m2 to 20 kg/m2.
At least one layer of the fibrous blanket material, both as illustrated, is covered with a vapour barrier layer 16, 18, for example of PVC coated glass cloth, silicon coated polymeric material or possibly aluminium foil.
The resulting acoustic composite material is at least as efficient, as far as transmission loss is concerned, as the product known from U.K. Patent
Specification No. 2 261 846, but is of simpler construction and is easier and less expensive to manufacture. Unlike glass or mineral fibre material, the polyester blanket material used in this invention does not non-elastically compress or break down when squashed, and is more user friendly.
Claims (17)
1. An acoustic composite material comprising a fibrous blanket, a protective layer adhesively overlying one face of the blanket and an acoustic barrier layer interposed between the protective layer and the blanket, the protective layer and the acoustic barrier layer being bonded together to constitute a vapour barrier, and the vapour barrier layer being adhesively bonded to the blanket.
2. An acoustic composite material according to claim 1, wherein the acoustic barrier layer is adhesively bonded to the fibrous blanket.
3. An acoustic composite material comprising two layers of fibrous blanket having sandwiched between them an acoustic barrier layer and on the face of at least one of the layers of fibrous blanket a sheet material constituting a vapour barrier.
4. An acoustic composite material according to any of claims 1 to 3, wherein the fibrous blanket is made of polyester fibres first spun and then matted under heat and pressure, as by means of heated rollers, to form a non-delaminating pad.
5. An acoustic composite material according to claim 4, wherein the blanket material is that known by the Trade Mark *Fiberform".
6. An acoustic composite material according to claim l or claim 2, wherein the protective layer is made from metallic (aluminium) foil of between 2 and 150 microns, preferably about 20 microns, thickness.
7. An acoustic composite material according to claim 6, wherein a PVC coated scrim (e.g. 50 to 300 g/m2) is used to reinforce the metallic foil.
8. An acoustic composite material according to claim 1 or claim 2, wherein the acoustic barrier layer is a polymeric material, for example a chlorinated polyethylene based material, with a surface density between 1 and 15 kg/m2.
9. An acoustic composite material according to claim 8, in which the polymeric material is loaded with a high density filler such as barium sulphate.
10. An acoustic composite material according to claim 1 or claim 2, wherein the acoustic barrier layer is made of a PVC based material or a material based on ethylene vinyl acetate.
11. An acoustic composite material according to claim 3, wherein the acoustic barrier layer is a polymeric material, for example a chlorinated polyethylene based material, with a surface density between 1 and 15 kg/m2.
12. An acoustic composite material according to claim 11, wherein the polymeric material is loaded with a high density filler such as barium sulphate.
13. An acoustic composite material acording to claim 11, wherein the acoustic barrier layer is made of lead.
14. An acoustic composite material according to any of claims 11 to 13, wherein the vapour barrier layer is made of PVC coated glass cloth.
15. An acoustic composite material according to claim 1 or claim 2, wherein the fibrous blanket has a thickness in the range 5 to 40 mm, and a volume density in the range 5 to 30 kg/m3.
16. An acoustic composite material according to claim 3, wherein two layers of thickness each in the range 5 to 25 mm are employed as the blanket layer.
17. An acoustic composite material substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to Figure 1 or Figure 2 of the accompanying drawings.
