Abstract
A restraining device for a child comprises a front part 1 and a back part 2, the parts being integral, with the juncture having a aperture 3 through which the head of a wearer may pass. The lower side edges of the front part have laterally extending attachment webs 4 and 5 each of which is secured to respective tapes 6 and 7. The rear part 2 has, at each lower side edge, slots 8 and 9 defined by reinforced corners 10 and 11. The device is fitted over a wearer in the manner of a jacket or vest and the tapes and webs 5,7 and 4,6 are passed through the respective slots 9,8. The free ends of the tapes may then be secured, by tying, by buckles, by clips or other means to or around a seat, e.g. a vehicle seat or a high chair.
Description
TITLE:
Restraining device primarily for a child
This invention relates to a restraining device which is primarily, but not essentially, intended to be wom by or fitted to a child.
One of the objects of this invention is to provide a device which may be fitted in a simple manner to a child and which serves to secure the child to a seat, chair or restraining means or the like in a comfortable manner by a simple operation
According to this invention there is provided a restraining device comprising a jacket with a front and a back part and a medial aperture defining a collar which may be passed over the head of a wearer to lie around the neck with the front part adjacent the chest and the rear part adjacent the back of the wearer, the normally lower sides of the front and the rear part being held together by fastening means and having restraining ties for attachment to a seat chair or the like.
The lower sides of the front and back part will normally lie about the waist of a wearer. The front part and the rear part will preferably be in one integral piece with the collar in a medial position. This affords simple a rapid fitting should the need arise. In a preferred embodiment the front part at each lower side edge includes tapes or other tie means arranged to pass through apertures, such as slots in the rear part and adjacent the lower side edges. The free ends of the tapes may then be used to secure the device and thus the wearer in a simple manner to a high-chair, vehicle seat or to a safety harness or "reins".
Preferably the slots in the rear part will be reinforced. The device will advantageously be constructed from a fabric or a plastics material and may thus be easily rolled or folded into a small package. The device can thus be made easily portable for use, as example, in buses, coaches or the like which may have no suitable child restraining means installed.
The device provides comfort and obviates high compressive forces which may occur with the use of thin straps or belts. The device also reduces the risk of a small child sliding down in a seat.
One embodiment of this invention wil! be described by way of example with reference to the drawings wherein:
Figure 1 shows a view of a restraining device according to this invention, and
Figure 2 shows the device in use in conjunction with a seat or chair, typically a vehicle seat.
As shown the device comprises a front part 1 and a back part 2, the parts being integral, with the juncture having an aperture 3 forming a collar through which the head of a wearer may pass. The lower side edges of the front part have laterally extending attachment webs 4 and 5 each of which is secured to respective tapes 6 and 7. The rear part 2 has, at each lower side edge, slots 8 and 9 defined by reinforced corners 10 and 11.
As shown in Figure 2, the device is fitted over a wearer W in the manner of a jacket or vest and the tapes and webs 5,7 and 4,6 are passed through the respective slots 9,8. The free ends of the tapes may then be secured, by tying, by buckles, by clips or other means to or around a seat S.
Typical dimensions for a device intended for a child would be of a width 35 cm, overall length 60 cm with the collar aperture front to back of 15 cm and side to side of 20 cm.
Claims (8)
1. A restraining device comprising a jacket with a front and a back part and a medial aperture defining a collar opening which may be passed over the head of a wearer to lie around the neck and rest on the shoulders with the front part adjacent the chest and the rear part adjacent the back of the wearer, the normally lower sides or edges of the front and the rear part being held together by fastening means and having restraining ties for attachment to a seat, chair or the like.
2. A device in accordance with Claim 1, wherein the lower sides of the front and back part are adapted to lie about and around the waist of a wearer with the front part and the rear part in one integral piece the collar aperture lying in a generally medial position.
3. A device in accordance with Claim 1 or 2, wherein the front part at each lower side edge includes tapes or other tie means arranged to pass through apertures, such as slots, in the rear part and adjacent the lower side edges.
4. A device in accordance with any preceding Claim wherein, the free ends of the tapes are of a length sufficient to secure the device and thus the wearer in a simple manner to a high-chair, vehicle seat or to a safety harness or "reins"
5. A device in accordance with any preceding Claim, wherein the slots in the rear part are reinforced, the device being advantageously constructed from a fabric or a plastics material.
6. A device in accordance with any preceding Claim wherein the free ends of the tapes are secured by buckles, clips or like means.
