Abstract

A hand grip to receive bag handles so that the handles will not cut into the carrier's hand comprises a channel-shaped member 1 of generally U-section. The mouth 3 of the channel narrows at 2 at its ends. The internal wall 4 of the grip is smooth. Its base 5 is thickened, having downwardly rounded ends 6 and shaped finger recesses 7 beneath. The grip may be of injection moulded plastics and may integrally incorporate other features such as a window ice scraper as shown in Figure 4.

Description

COMFORTABLE HAND GRIP It is a known fact that thin plasic strap handles on such asrmass produced plastic bags for use in the retail trade, and thin leather or platted straps on nylon string bags when fully laden cut into the thin soft flesh of the fingers causing bruising and circulation problems if canying any distance.
Providing a proper comfortable handle on every bag would be uneconomical therefore a portable versatile reuseable handle would be the most practical solution.A recent inovation proposed is the use of a solid cylindrical piece of wood with a groove at both ends. The handles of a plastic bag are located one in each groove. The drawbacks of this is that you are restricted to one type of bag and being fixed at both ehds uneven loading of contents could cause an inbalance one side or the other making it awkward to carry.
A simple practical solution is a 'U' shaped hand grip support made from ecologically friendly material such as recycleable plastc or some such material, which can be used to carry single or multiple plastic bags in the same grip, and versatile enough to be used on other types of bags with thin strap handles such as string bags and even supermarket baskets with thin rod handles, and string handled carrier bags , Airport duty free bags etc.
Described below is such a portable handle which doesn't' reduce the strength of the original carrier handles, but supports them and spreads the load evenly over a broader base consequently more comfortable to hold. - DESCRIPTION The comfortable hand grip is a short length of injection mdUlded flexible plastic or some such type material as shown in fig 1 marked 1.The grip coristructed strong enough to carry the load transferred from thin strap handles and of sufficiënt girth to spread the load to relieve discomfort. The grip has a broad slit marked 3 Figi' 'running along the top edge which is the means of entry and exit of existing strap handles. The slit narrows at both ends to retain strap handles when they have been forced into the body of the grip. The narrow section being short and the material the grip is made of being flexible allows the straps easy access and egress. The grip will retain the straps without falling off. The broad slit prevents trapping skin when weight is on the grip.as the edges cannot completely close together. The internal wall of the grip marked 4 fig.1 are smooth to ensure the existing handle straps are guided to the lower section of the grip. Yhe lower section of the grip marked 5 fig.1 is of thicker section of material required to take the transferred weight when in use.The ends of the grip lower section marked 5 fig.1 carries the weight transfer from the existing straps and has a rounded lip marked 6 at both ends to reduce point loading.
The smooth intemal area of the grip allows the existing straps to slide through the body of the grip providing even weight distribution so load is central to grip, and perpendicular.
The lower section of the grip marked 5 fig.i will accommodate muftiple flexible strap handles.
The underside external area of the grip marked 7 fig.1 is shaped for comfortable finger holds. Fig 2 shows the comfortable grip in use on a plastic bag. A slight induced curve may be desireable to prevent sideways tuming moments on the grip. Fig3 shows the comfortable grip in use on a supermarket shopping basket and fig 4 shows useful additional features could be incorporated such as shown a window icei'scraper,as an integral part of the grip.

Claims (2)

  1. i) A transferable 'U' shaped comfortable hand grip enveloping a existing primary handle or strap that has a small cross sectional area, which would ordinarily be uncomfortable to hold when a weight is suspended. Supporting the primary handle or strap suspended within the body of a comfortable hand grip, and at the same time redistributing the weight over the broader base of the comfortable hand grip, seperating contact between the hand and the primary handle or strap the weight transferred to the comfortable hand grip making it possible to carry in comfort.
  2. 2) A comfortable hand grip as claimed in claim 1 the weight suspended on straps or handles moving freely within the body of the hand grip sliding on the smooth intemal support faces so the weight is perpendicular to and in equal balance at both ends of the hand grip.
3)A comfortable hand grip as described in text and illustrated by sketches.
