Abstract

A portable sign for controlling the flow of traffic and/or pedestrians on a road and comprises an attention-drawing, visual warning displaying F, region adjacent or around whose periphery there is spaced a plurality of selectively actuable lights B, and a hand-hold region 1 which a user of the sign can grasp to hold the sign in view of oncoming traffic and/or pedestrians. The lights may flash and a manual switch may be formed integrally with the rest of the hand-hold region of the sign.

Description

HAND HELD WARNING SIGN Field of the Invention The present invention relates to hand held warning signs such as, for example, "lollipop" type stop signs as used as manned pedestrian crossings and by traffic control police.

Summarv of the Invention The invention is detailed and described in the accompanying Figures 1 and 2 of the drawings and fundamentally comprises a hand held warning sign having a handle stem 1 with a flat circular warning board F atop the handle stem 1 and marked with recognisable wording and symbols. Around the rim of the circular plate F is provided a ring of lights B that are suitably LED's but may be conventional bulbs. These are shielded in a transparent housing suitably of plastics material and identified on the drawings as a clear lens C.

A self-contained power source and control electronic circuitry-containing box E is mounted on the shaft 1 and has a switch D to activate the light array B.

The electronic circuitry in the control box E enables the lights to be flashed in a fashion that enhances the attention-obtaining nature of the sign.

In a preferred alternative embodiment to that illustrated in the drawing the control box E is integral with the shaft 1.

Of particular significance is the ring-shape form of the lens/lighthousing C which significantly enhances the operation of the sign.

Claims

1 A portable sign for controlling the flow of traffic and/or pedestrians on a road and comprising an attention-drawing, visual warning displaying, region adjacent or around whose periphery there is spaced a plurality of selectively actuable lights, and a hand-hold region which a user of the sign can grasp to hold the sign in view of oncoming traffic and/or pedestrians.

2. A portable sign as claimed in claim 1 in which the hand-hold region is so disposed in relation to the warning displaying region as to enable the user to grasp and display the sign "lollipop-style"

3. A portable sign as claimed in claim 1 or claim 2 in which the lights are sufficient in number and are so disposed about the sign as to define a ring when actuated

4. A portable sign as claimed in any of the preceding claims in which the lights flash when actuated.

5. A portable sign as claimed in any of the preceding claims in which that part of the light-actuating means which switches the lights on and off is a manual switch situated on the hand-hold region of the sign.

6. A portable sign as claimed in claim 5 in which the material which houses the manual switch is formed integrally with the rest of the hand-hold region of the sign.

7. A portable sign for controlling the flow of traffic and/or pedestrians on a road substantially as described herein with reference to and as illustrated by the accompanying drawings.
