Description

A FINIAL BASE FOR A CONSERVATORY ROOF This invention relates to a finial base for a conservatory roof.
Finial bases for conservatory roofs are well known and they are of a one part design. The known one part finial bases are either individually cut around conservatory rafters to create a seal and a suitable appearance, or they are left sitting on top of the conservatory rafters. The cutting of the one piece finial base can sometimes be awkward. Leaving the one piece finial base sitting on top of the rafters may cause sealing problems and tends not to look right. In addition, the known one piece finial bases sometimes tend to be higher than might otherwise be preferred.
It is an aim of the present invention to obviate or reduce the above mentioned problems.
Accordingly, in one non-limiting embodiment of the present invention, there is provided a finial base for a conservatory roof, which finial base comprises a first cover part for fitting over conservatory rafters, and a second cover part fitting on top of the first cover part, the first cover part being adapted to be cut to a required shape to fit over different configurations of the conservaXory rafters, and the second cover part being such that it is able always to be the same so that it forms a universal fitting for first cover parts which have been cut to different shapes for the different configurations of the conservatory rafters in conservatories of different designs.
Preferably, the first and the second parts look as though they are a single member when in use.
The first cover part may have a skirt portion which is for being cut to the required shape.
Usually, the skirt portion will increase in height from the rear to the front of the skirt portion.
The first cover part may have a recess which extends inwardly from the periphery of the first cover part and which is for receiving an end of a horizontally extending apex portion of the conservatory roof.
Usually, the first cover part will be a substantially circular first cover part. Other shapes for the first cover part may however be employed.
The second cover part is preferably a cap.
The second cover part may Increase in height from the rear to the front of the second cover part.
The present invention also extends to a conservatory when provided with a finial base of the invention.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described solely by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a known conservatory having a first known finial base; Figure 2 shows on an enlarged scale part of a conservatory roof having a second known finial base; Figure 3 is a view similar to Figure 2 but shows a finial base of the present invention; Figure 4 is an exploded view of the finial base shown in Figure 3 and before cutting to fit to the rafters shown in Figure 3; Figures 5, 6 and 7 are front, side and top views respectively of a first cover part of the finial base shown in Figures 3 and 4; Figures 8, 9 and 10 are front, side and top views respectively of a second cover part of the finial base shown in Figures 3 and 4; Figure 11 is a front detailed view showing how the finial base of Figures 3 and 4 fits in position; and Figure 12 is a side view of the arrangement shown in Figure 11.
Referring to Figure 1, there is shown a conservatory 2 having a first apex portion 4 for abutting a side of a building (not shown). Rafters 6 extend from the first apex portion 4 as shown. The conservatory 4 has a second apex portion 8 which is provided with spikes 10 as shown. The second apex portion 8 has a first known finial base 12. Rafters 14 radiate from the first finial base 12 as shown and they lead to a gutter 16, also as shown.
Referring now to Figure 2, there is shown a second known finial base 18 which is provided on rafters 14. The second finial base 18 is of a different design to the first finial base 12 but they are both of a one piece construction. As can be seen from Figure 2, the finial base 18 has had its bottom portion cut at positions 20 to accommodate the rafters 14. Because the finial base 18 is of a one piece design with a closed top part 22, there may be times when it is difficult to cut the portions 20. The second finial base 18 as shown in Figure 2 also tends to be too high for good aesthetic appeal.
Referring now to Figures 3 - 12, there is shown a finial base 24 of the present invention. The finial base 4 comprises a first cover part 26 for fitting over conservatory rafters 28 of a conservatory roof.
The finial base 24 also comprises a second cover part 30 for fitting on top of the first cover part 26.
The shape of the first and the second cover parts 26, 30 is most easily appreciated from Figure 4. From Figure 4 it will be seen that the first cover part 26 is adapted to be cut to a required shape to fit over different configurations of the conservatory rafters 28. It will also be seen that the second cover part 30 is such that it can always be the same so that it forms a universal fitting for first cover parts 26 which have been cut to different shapes for different configurations of the rafters 28 in conservatories of different designs.
As can be seen from Figure 3, the first and the second cover parts 26, 30 look as though they are a single member when they are in use.
The first cover part 26 has a skirt portion 32 which is for being cut to the required shape, for example to give cut out portions 34 as shown in Figure 3.
As best shown in Figure 6, the first cover part 26 is such that the skirt portion 34 increases from the rear to the front of the skirt portion 34.
As best seen from Figures 4 and 7, the first cover part 26 has a recess 36 which extends inwardly from the periphery of the first cover part 26. This recess 36 is for receiving an end 38 of a horizontally extending apex portion 40 of the conservatory roof.
The recess 36 is bounded by an upstanding wall 42.
The first cover part 26 is substantially circular as shown.
The second cover part 30 is in the form of a cap.
The second cover part 30 has a skirt portion 44 which, as shown in Figure 9, increases in height from the rear to the front of the second cover part 30. The skirt portion 44 has an outwardly extending flange 46.
The second cover part 30 has a raised part 48 which locates over the recess 36.
The position of the rafters 28 and glazing 50 inside the finial base 24 is shown in detail in Figures 11 and 12.
The finial base 24 is such that the second cover part 30 easily fits on top of the first cover part 26 to form a finial base which appears to be of a one part construction and which also is not too high from an aesthetic appearance.
As shown in Figure 3, different types of finials 52 can be arranged to upstand from the raised part 48 which has a flat portion 54.
It is to be appreciated that the embodiment of the invention described above with reference to the accompanying drawings has been given by way of example only and that modifications may be effected. Thus, for example, the shape of the first cover part 36 and/or the second cover part 30 may be varied whilst still providing a two part finial base. Any suitable and appropriate design of finial may upstand from the finial base.
